Why don't the pretty people just stay indoors so the ugly people don't have to feel sad? Maybe if they did there wouldn't be war. And skinny people should stay indoors to, so that people don't feel the need to try and run them over.

With the "natural" argument, charmers always try to equate breastfeeding with sex and shitting. Always. Babies eating being compared to sex and shitting will never make sense to me.

Breastfeeding in public is a woman's (and a baby's) legal right, in my country, anyway. That's the argument that matters. Other people's hangups don't really play in when there are laws specifically protecting the right to breastfeed in public.

I'm offended by ugliness, but my social voice isn't powerful enough to keep the uglies indoors. And that is really unfortunate.

Ah touché bestsariah! But, let me retort!

Going to extremes can be considered intelligent debate. The intelligence or value in such argument comes when one position is carried to its logical conclusion. Even carried to the extreme it can (thou not always) illuminate the nature of the position. In context of the current issue, we contend that breast feeding is natural and thus should be allowed to be publicly displayed because since it is natural it shouldn’t be offensive. There are a slew of natural process that fit this grouping as you pointed out, breathing, circulating, and eating just to name a few. But then there are those examples that are also natural that don’t fit the mold, such as having sex and using the bathroom. Both groups have the characteristic of being a natural human function but we parsed one as being offensive and one as not. Thus I am forced to conclude that the “naturalness” of the activity has nothing to do with the level of offensiveness of the activity.

This leads me to other options for basing a justification about breast feeding not being offensive. My initial inclination is the offensiveness on a matter is one of social convention. While I find it personally silly that someone would find breast feeding offensive; I have a hard time trying to impose such a personal view point on other people. By the events you mentioned I think it safe to conclude that at least a significant minority disagrees with our stance on breast feeding. The question becomes how significant does a minority have to be in order to consider it a legitimate social voice worth consideration in our behavior? I really don’t have an answer for that, but apparently the people at facebook do.

When push comes to shove and someone asks me why breast feeding in a public forum isn’t offensive to me I can only reply that I feel that it isn’t. I have not hard logical proof to back it. I suppose it would be like asking me why I don’t find bikinis offensive; I just don’t feel that they are. On the other hand a member of the Muslim faith might find them just the opposite. While I would personally find that silly, I would find it hard to impose that view by calling the other person silly, even thou that’s what they are, silly. By silly I mean Goofy silly not Donald Duck silly.

Furthermore, peeing and having sex in public probably isn't that sanitary so it shouldn't be allowed, at least not at a table in restaurants.

That's not the picture that was taken down that is in the news. The picture that made the news was sweet like mine.

That natural argument when they talk about poop and sex and such is not a good one. Going to extremes is not considered intelligent debate. It would be equally lame for someone to say just because breathing is natural doesn't mean it's acceptable, so people should stop doing it in public. Some natural things, such as breathing, blood circulating, and eating, are appropriate in public. It's even appropriate for babies to eat. What is inappropriate is for people to jerk off to babies eating. That is the thing that needs to stop...not the eating.

Fruit makes a good point. I actually thought the same thing when I read the "natural" argument. Although I don't think breastfeeding is "porny," I can see how people at the ends of the spectrum, prudes and pervs, could be both offended and turned on by it, respectively. And I'm not for censorship, but the picture in the adverstisement that was pulled was done in poor taste. The woman was breastfeeding standing up, posing with one finger placed seductively on her mouth. It was a "natural" tender moment.

I start off on my friend Bryan's blog, end up getting linked to Sherpa, now I'm looking a picture of a woman breast feeding. Oh the tangential nature of blog entertainment will never stop amazing me.

Just to play devils advocate; having sex, and using the restroom are also completely natural activities. I would consider pictures of either to be offensive. I'm also sure there are plenty of guys out there that have jerked off to pictures of women breast feeding, having sex, and using the restroom.

I'm with you Bethany. I also had to stop with Santiago and I felt like the worst mother in the world. Correction - I FEEL like the worst mother in the world over it. I wonder if that pain I had was also mastitis? I'd never even heard of that until I read about it on your blog and I looked it up online. Interesting.

As for you Sara... stop trying to find excuses to expose your boobs. Perv.

2007-09-12T14:07:00.000-06:00

I joined the group!

I didn't realize until I became a mother myself that a baby needs to eat, at max, every TWO HOURS. And when you're out running your errands, it's not like you can say, "OK, we'll eat as soon as we get home." And you can't just give them a little snack to tide them over. It's not like you can time your errands either because you're typically working around their nap schedule (which is often just as frequent), NOT their eating schedule. So I am all for public breastfeeding.

One needs to only Google the term or look it up on BabyCenter.com to see that the benefits far outweigh bottle feeding.

By the way, another REALLY touching and charming picture. Your family has got a ton of 'em!

I can't even think if it has been two years or three years since I was on Linkup. I'm not surprised to hear the same conversations are still making the rounds. (But I'm surprised you're still on there, Kristy. I thought you kicked it. No?)

This budding argument feels all too familiar. How many years ago was it that this was a hot topic over yonder at Linkup?
