Comment on It’s official: Apple fanboy desperation has splashed off the bottom into the Land of the Ludicrous by miconn

Thu, 13 Feb 2014 13:46:09 +0000

Our local school system went with Mac in a project they call The Digital Renaissance. They thought it was a good idea to place a $1200 laptop computer into the hands of every middle and high school student. My kids have never been more on Facebook and Twitter in their lives. I laughed when they were trying sell us on the idea that this computer would replace all the books and decrease costs for the system. I knew where this was going. Evidently, some hack in the system thought they could just go online and download the textbooks. I asked them, "what are going to do? Bootleg them? You know that the book companies are not going to just let you HAVE that book online. You will still pay a pretty penny for those licenses, IF they even will do business that way. So my daughters ended up carrying a $1200 computer AND their text books. They now do most of their classwork via online video and Google. The school system screams the program is a success! I say somebody lined their pockets with kickbacks on a major sale contract. Did I mention that the school system begged for a one cent increase in local taxes to help the shortfall in funding from the state? They got it, renewed it, only now they slipped in the option to make it permanent by going through the State House versus allowing the residents of our county vote whether or not it should be renewed. Our sales tax here is $.10 on the dollar. But you know, "It's for the CHILDREN!".........

Comment on LDS General Conference in a Modern World #ldsconf by Pedro

Sun, 03 Oct 2010 03:31:59 +0000

It took me two years of mission to really come to appreciate general conference, and now I make sure to stay through all five sessions (four regular + priesthood). I agree that tech makes conference more interactive because you can talk to others about it more easily, but I think tweeting or facebooking about talks *during* conference isn't the most appropriate way to do it. There's so much good stuff coming from those talks that even by taking notes I feel like I'm missing something important, and I would certainly not dare to be updating my statuses or online discussions if the speakers were personally on the podium in front of me. But during the two-hour recesses, I say tweet away.

@Gary - Just to clarify - I ALSO have browser access to my email, contacts and calendars. But you're absolutely right, everyone wants it a bit different. The issue I had was that they were all wanting a solution that is already there. @Jayson - same here! @Tyler LOL!

It's a good thing there's more than one way to do it :D You prefer your data to sync to all of your devices, and Exchange gives you that. I'd rather that my data be kept in one place and accessible from any device that happens to have a browser, and Google and Yahoo give me that. That doesn't mean I like Microsoft -- I get along in Windows about as well as you do on a Mac, which is why I doubt I'll ever own a Windows machine again -- but it's great that there are options available for both of us!

Agreed, hating Microsoft seems silly and I've wondered for years what the big deal is - are they really that bad? They've helped me be more productive for years.

Oh, Phil, you're such a Microsoft schill. Next thing you know you'll be spouting off about your computer, it's low low price and all the software it will run. After that you'll probably tell us the only apple worth buying is from Washington and can only be found in your local produce section. Pathetic. Just pathetic. If you're not careful, you'll offend all the Microsoft haters and they'll write all kinds of crazy stuff in your comments section.

Lol Brad - clearly we have different views on services! Does your solution provide synching of calendars, contacts and email to your phone, desktop and laptop? My hosted exchange service provides a full web interface to my email - I assume that's what you were referring to with "any computer or device access outweighs outlook/entourage" If you've got it all working, you should have been at the CTO Breakfast this morning so you could explain how to do it!

Been using Google Apps as my Exchange replacement w/ no real problems. I gave up Outlook / Entourage for native Gmail web client -- the benefit of any computer or device access outweights Outlook / Entourage benefit. That said, on my WIndows PC I just installed Google App Sync for Outlook. Works like a charm for me. iPhone, Outlook, Gmail, Google Calendar all work fine. I'm probably going to shut off Plaxo and the 50 other wannabe services to simplify to LinkedIn and Facebook.

Good luck on your diet. I tried a juice fast and the master cleansing but I could not last a week on either one. You only need to do the master cleanse for 10 days and I cant imaging just juice for 40 days. If you have will power to do it good luck.

Phil, Good post. I think many of us going through these periods of change and it is helpful to see others, like yourself, voice it. Plus, sometimes voicing it helps us to figure it out where the change is taking us. Congrats on the new job and continued vibes from my side for your family. Best. Rachel

Comment on Day 2 of Juice Fasting by Wii Games For Wii

I started trying to cut back on soda as my New Year's resolution. I was guilty of drinking a 1/2 dozen sodas during the day and little (sometimes no) water. I still drink some soda, but less than I did and a lot more water. I had a horrible headache in the beginning to so I can sympathize. :)

So, you had a body detox. I salute you. It's a tough process--and the toughest is juice fasting. I imagine, your fasting period must be done and healthy habits had set in. You may want to try these smoothie combination: banana + strawberry, pineapple + banana, and kiwi + strawberry.

My prayers go out to you and your family. My finance was diagnosed with leukemia in March 2008. He was 25 at the time. The doctor came in the room and told the family that 90% of the cancer cells were gone after the first treatment. He has been in remission ever since. Remember to keep your head up there is always light at the end of the tunnel. After the treatments Serenity will be fine. She will live a long and healthy life.

Wow, juice fasting. I'm addicted to orange joice and Gatorade. I once went awhile without any soda and it made soda feel real heavy and unhealthy the next time i had it. If you can go awhile without soda or any foods with sugar in general(cakes/snacks) you'll feel extremely healthy and full of energy.
