"Fake it till you make it" is the slogan of a mind control cult that exploits women distributors of cosmetics and skin care junk.

Faking is always wrong, and driving a pink Cadillac is no excuse for that progaganda.

Well, your points are interesting, and I agree that ivory tower theorizing almost never yields results in the real world.

But saying a marketing person need not market himself is like saying a dentist needs no dental work.

I think.

Anyway, if you are a good marketing mind, you should be able to market yourself, as well as others.

"Physician heal thyself" deal.

Andy Warhol marketed himself.

Don't we have to market ourselves, at least our expertise as it solves problems for clients, prior to hitting the critical mass of referral influx geysers?

You make Vaspers think deep. Thanks!

Steven:

I had many marketing professors who couldn't move a product out of a wholesale Wal-mart. I think the communications business schools do students a great disservice with a lot of bogus theory that flies in the face of pragmatic sales and marketing experiences. That's from someone whose graduate work received honors from Georgetown.

That being said, I agree that who the higher ranked marketing bloggers refer to is a great indicator of success. For example, Constantin Bastura is an expert, but Joe Schmo wouldn't know him. Every A-Lister knows him. Doc Searls, often cited, etc.

Real marketers produce results. A great marketer doesn't need to market him/herself. He just picks up the phone because of the referrals. Period.
