TiVo Repair & Upgrade Services Make an Old TiVo Better than New;

Repair or Re-gift That Old TiVo

CHICAGO, IL - (November 18, 2008) - There's new life for that old TiVo, hard drive and all, thanks to DVRupgrade's new repair services.

For the past nine years TiVo DVRs have changed the way people watch TV, and for almost as long, DVRupgrade has been providing upgrade kits and services to advanced TiVo owners who want to increase the recording times on their TiVo. Taking things one step further, now everyone who owns an older DVR can repair and enhance it with DVRupgrade's new repair service. There has never been an easier and faster way to repair a TiVo DVR.

"Try walking into a local electronics store to repair and upgrade a broken TiVo," said Lou Jacob, President and founder of DVRupgrade, "they will try to sell you a new one! We have found that almost all TiVo failures are hard-drive related, and can be easily fixed with a simple hard drive replacement." Lou goes on to say, "Also, for those who have a lifetime subscription on their TiVo, repairing your unit is worthwhile and will save you money."

There are a few different methods to repair and upgrade your TiVo. One inexpensive approach is a "Quick-Install Kit," where a mechanically inclined person can install, revive and upgrade a TiVo in twenty minutes. The kit includes everything required for a successful installation and requires no computer or technical experience. If the customer wants DVRupgrade to do the work, "Same Day Turnaround" service is also available.

With the holidays in mind, and for those considering the move to high definition, DVRupgrade is also offering a "Buy a New TiVo HD and Re-gift the Old" special. This service is appealing to those who would like to either give their old TiVo to someone else or use their older TiVo with another TV in the home. By purchasing an upgraded TiVo HD from DVRupgrade, the customer gets both a repair and upgrade of their old TiVo and a new TiVo HD, all for a special discount.

Repair and upgrade options for your TiVo start as low as $19.99. Learn more about DVRupgrade products and current holiday specials by visiting the DVRupgrade website at

Squeezebox and Harmony One at a Very Special Price

Tue, 30 Sep 2008 10:26:28 CDT

For those of you who are looking to add a little flare to your home entertainment system, Logitech has some very exciting products that can really make a difference.

The Harmony® One Advanced Universal Remote is a snazzy new remote from Logitech that will work so well, you really can put away most, if not all of your remotes. We still like the TiVo remote better for everyday TiVo use, but it really does work well, even for TiVo. It works even better for everything else, and its ability to 'recover' when your devices get out of sync is so easy, you'll never worry about it again. Its also a snap to configure because you can create an account with all of your settings on Logitech's web site; just sync your remote with a PC or Mac and you are good to go.

[Logitech Harmony One]

The Logitech Squeezebox Duet is a great addition to your home theater setup because you can not only play all of the songs you've stored on your computer, connect with Rhapsody®, Pandora®, and Sirius, but you can also use the multi-room controller to direct the output to any connected room in your home, not just your home entertainment system. If you've heard of the Sonos, then forget about it, the Logitech is not only better, but its less expensive and based upon open systems technologies (meaning that there are many user-contributed plug-ins available).

TiVo HD and TiVo Series3 Promotions Ending Soon

Wed, 06 Feb 2008 04:06:50 CDT

TiVo is running a few nice specials, but some of them are ending soon. Specifically, you can get three free months of service on any TiVo HD or Series3 purchased from DVRupgrade using this rebate.

In addition, you can use a coupon to receive an HDMI cable for a penny, and also purchase a Glo-Remote for only $30. Series3 (TCD648) Units to be Discontinued

Thu, 31 Jan 2008 01:15:47 CDT

This is disappointing, but understandable. We just got word of the following from TiVo: "I wanted to give an update on our plans with the TiVo Series3 HD DVR. A successful implementation of the $200 rebate through the holidays has drained supply at a faster rate than anticipated. This has caused a continued component shortage that cannot be rectified for several months (4-6). Due to this parts supply situation, we have made the difficult decision to accelerate the EOL of this SKU and focus all efforts on the recently launched, lower cost TiVo HD DVR (TCD652160). Our sincere apologies for the short notice on this decision." Well, we do have a small supply of Series3 units in stock. But when they are gone, unless something changes, they are gone for good.

The New TiVo® HD DVR with Series3™ Technology

Sun, 22 Jul 2007 04:57:08 CDT

Finally, a TiVo® DVR that supports HDTV, works with cable and is available for less than $300! This new TiVo HD DVR is designed to work with any cable provider, esepcially those who offer HDTV services using CableCARDs, it can record two programs at once (even while you watch a third pre-recorded show), connect to your home network so that you can download movies, share home videos, music and photos, and many other great things included with the TiVo service! The TiVo HD DVR, much like its older brother, Series3 HD DVR, contains Series3™ technology but it is offered at a significantly lower price for a few reasons: It has a smaller hard drive (160GB vs 250GB), does not include a TiVo Glo Remote and also doesn't have a fancy OLED display. We have a relatively comprehensive comparison chart you can use to compare the major differences. Fortunately, the TiVo Glo Remote can be purchased separately, and we expect this unit will be easily upgraded, just as its predecessors are. With that in mind, we are currently taking orders for the new TiVo HD DVR, and are offering special promotions to those who order the new TiVo HD DVR prior to August 15th. All systems include free UPS Ground Shipping, however orders placed with a priority shipping method will be given a higher priority when systems are allocated. Special Offer #1: A FREE TiVo Glo Premium Remote with the purchase of ANY upgraded Series3 TiVo DVR or TiVo HD DVR(coupon code: GLOREMOTE07A) Special Offer #2: $15 off of a TiVo Glo Premium Remote with the purchase of any stock TiVo HD DVR (coupon code: GLOREMOTE07B). Do software updates break your hard drives?

Sat, 10 Mar 2007 12:15:57 CDT

In the past 7ix years, TiVo users have experienced drive failures sometimes, during, or immediately following a software update. Be rest assured, with all of the software updates underway, someone is bound to blame the update for the failure of their hardware. How could this be? The fact is that the software updates do not cause drive failures. But it is important to note that when a new software update downloads to your unit, it is installed on a partition of your drive that is currently not in use. This means that if there are bad sectors on your drive, in that unused space, you may begin attempting to use that space once the new software is installed. In effect, it appears that the software update has damaged your drive, when in fact it hasn't; even though its exposed a defect that has been dormant for some time.

Now, please read the information to your left very carefully. As it so happens, imminent software updates to your Series1 DirecTV TiVo may very well cause you some heartache, and it may not have to do with a defective component at all. This is because those with extra large hard drives in their system are running augmented software that contains code not released by the big guys. And this mean, a software update will get you in trouble unless you fix it right away. Please see the important information to your left for more details.

Hopefully, you will not be affected by this, however if you are, we are here to help you. Please feel free to visit our site or contact us and we'll try to get you going in the right direction. We can't give you any direct assistance with our DIY software products, however there is plenty of help and discussion available for those at TiVoCommunity and at DVRplayground.

Seagate DB35 Drives for your TiVo DVR

Mon, 22 Jan 2007 10:31:46 CDT

DVRupgrade is proud to announce availability of Seagate DB35 drives in most of our kits and upgraded TiVo DVR units. The DB35 is a relatively new family of drives available from Seagate; they are based upon the same technology as their high-quality and high-performance desktop drives, however they have been tuned so that they are better-suited for use in DVR systems such as your TiVo.

We are still finding that the performance and reliability of our premium Samsung drives is still slightly better than even the Seagate DB35 drives, however if you are considering a large drives such as a 750GB drive, there is no comparison to the Seagate DB35.

If you are interested in which kits contain DB35 drives, please feel free to contact us prior to ordering a kit, and remember regardless of the types of drives we use, we provide an industry leading six-month warranty, a 30-day money back guarantee and the credibility of a vendor who has been providing upgrades for your TiVo DVR longer than anyone else!

PTVupgrade is now DVRupgrade

Sun, 10 Dec 2006 02:43:30 CDT

If you haven't already noticed, we've rebranded as DVRupgrade and launched an entirely new web site.

A little history: PTVupgrade was originally established in September, 2000 and were the first to offer TiVo upgrade kits and services to the community. We originally launched as, however TiVo had issues (and rightly so) with the use of the word TiVo in our domain name. We quickly renamed to PTVupgrade, as "PTV" was really looking to be the generic term for a TiVo DVR and any other device which is now known to be considered a DVR.

So, with that in mind, we incorporated as DVRupgrade, Inc. several years ago. We also own and formally registered the trademark for DVRupgrade. And finally, we decided to entirely rebrand and launch our latest web site as DVRupgrade with an entirely redesigned interface, database, shopping cart and a new knowledgebase and heldesk, too.

Clearly its been a major undertaking (and a work still in progress) but something we really needed to do. We hope you'll visit our new site and drop us a line if you have any recommendations.

Please see the special offer below for a 10% off coupon that can be used until the end of this year.

Networking your TiVo DVR

Sun, 10 Dec 2006 02:26:03 CDT

Did you know that any Series1 TiVo and most Series2 DirecTV TiVo units can be connected to your home network so that you can remotely access it via a web browser? You can manage your season passes, prune your aging recordings and even send messages to members of your household through the TiVo interface from anywhere in the world!

How can this be done, you ask? Well, it depends on the unit you have. Older Series1 units can be equipped with our replacement drive kits and TurboNet or CacheCard interfaces. And many Series2 units can utilize our unique PTVnet products, and a USB Ethernet adapter for the same result.

Once you have a networked TiVo you can even register and use our free gotomydvr service which can allow you direct remote access to your TiVo without even having to setup your router!

The Slicer

Wed, 13 Sep 2006 04:43:48 CDT

The Slicer is a tool designed to allow your modified TiVo to accept and install a software update without overwriting existing telnet/ftp or serial bash access. This eliminates the need to remove an upgraded drive for the reinstallation of critical hacks. In short, if there is a downloaded software update on your particular Series2 TiVo DVR, The Slicer can be used to install it and it will then attempt to preserve the installation of telnet, ftp and several other popular hacks. Once your unit is restarted, you will still be able to access it for the installation of any advanced or modified hacks for the newer version of the software, but most importantly, by preserving telnet and ftp access you should not need to remove the drive from your unit at all.

Always Test your Drives

Wed, 13 Sep 2006 04:11:03 CDT

If you are performing an upgrade using our DIY software, such as InstantCake, then chances are that you've purchased a brand new drive for use in your TiVo. Just because a drive is new doesn't mean that there can't be something wrong with it; in fact, most drives that are going to fail, will do so within the first several weeks of use. We highly recommend you fully test your new drive using the manufacturer's diagnostics which are freely available from the web site of your hard drive's manufacturer. If you have time, perform the advanced tests, and even a "low level" format just for good measure. Its always easier to deal with a defective drive when its new rather than have a drive fail once its in your TiVo and has recordings on it already!

Keep your TiVo Cool

Sun, 30 Apr 2006 05:04:46 CDT

Its important to ensure your TiVo is properly ventilated so it can keep itself cool. Your Tivo is designed to draw cool, fresh air in from beneath itself, and exhaust it from the rear. You don't ever need to add an extra fan to your unit, even when upgrading it. Adding a fan can make it more difficult for the original fan to do its job. You can ensure your TiVo draws in cool air by elevating it slightly and not placing it on top of other components that exhaust warm air from the top. Proper cooling is a requirement for any TiVo whether its been upgraded or not.
