RALEIGH, N.C. — When you’ve won back-to-back Stanley Cups, there really isn’t much doubt what the goals and expectations are within a locker room.

North Hills stages varsity basketball games at the district’s middle school. But who would’ve thought a middle-school game would’ve broken out at North Hills Friday night in the WPIAL quarterfinals?

Mt. Lebanon lost three of its final five regular-season games, each one a close affair that the Blue Devils could not pull out.

BOYS BASKETBALL

I have one serious concern about the ransom the Penguins finally paid Friday night after climbing over a mountain of NHL red tape to get Ottawa center Derick Brassard in a trade. I have no problem giving up Ryan Reaves. Management will tell you Reaves served his role as a deterrent to other teams taking liberties against the Penguins stars, but he hardly played. At the risk of sounding like Neal Huntington, I don’t like giving up a No. 1 draft pick and young goaltender Filip Gustavsson, perhaps the most coveted prospect in the Penguins system. But that’s hardly my main worry. I really hate taking Ian Cole out of the team room. That aspect of the deal significantly weakens the defense and potentially alters the chemistry in a hurtful way. That troubles me.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Most of Friday was spent focused on whom the Penguins were adding to their third line, but their game against the Carolina Hurricanes showed that the players currently there are pretty darn good, too.

Jackson Blaufeld made six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Allderdice to a 60-53 triumph against Erie McDowell in a PIAA Class 6A sub-regional semifinal game at Fort LeBoeuf High School in Waterford, Pa.

Perhaps if someone messes with his players, general manager Jim Rutherford will walk out onto the ice and take care of business himself.

So Jim Rutherford, Friday evening’s hiccup aside, did a thing. Derick Brassard is a Penguin, Ian Cole is a Senator, Ryan Reaves is a Golden Knight, some smaller assets changed hands and a substantial amount of semi-laundered cap space is trapped in the troposphere between Pittsburgh, Ottawa and Las Vegas.

A report Friday from Yahoo!
