Hi! Was surfing the net for some teaching material when I came across your post. Thanks for being candid. Have a question though - are you still with Google? How are you guys doing amidst the recession?

Nice story...! I'm italian and I had a phone interview from US just some days ago and now I'm so proud that Google likes my cv... I believe it means something :) It would be nice if they choose me as Google engineer !

Wow, the comment above mine is particularly snooty and hard to believe. I have trouble separating my love for the Goolge employees from my general distrust of them as a corporate entity. As in, sure I can give Google Desktop access everything on my computer, those guys are my pals!
The stories I hear from my friends at Google indicate that it truly is a great place to work. I have heard that G-employees must devote a small percentage of their time to private projects and that much of GoogleLabs was built this way. I can't wait to get a chance to try out the legendary foodcourt---even if it means driving from Temescal.

It's a great story. Liked the quote, too. The point is to convince other smart people to want to work with you.

This is interesting...like the quote.
I had given a Google interview sometime back, it was good and i really liked the process. But i had to stop the process after the second round as i strongly felt that i could join Google anytime.(i later on took on a job @ a startup, which i had to quit after sometime).

Hope to join Google soon,...

It was a nice reading...

BTW, I met a Google engineer at the Pittsburgh office that sucks. Yeah, he sucks technically and personality wise. I can't understand how Google hired him...

Paul Tyma,It was great reading you.Thanks.

"If you're the smartest person where you work, quit"

I heard it a while ago when I used to play chess... "Play with stronger chessplayers!" (I played with Kasparov)

P.S.
The query was: "Google Interview Process" ;)

A problem I've had is that it's not clear what things would be better to review (in general, not just for Google). I've been a s/w engineer for over 20 years, so I don't have detailed recognition of everything I worked on. Also, it was never necessary (until now) to write out an algorithm in detail on request. Usually, if there was a question about what some specific algorithm did, one consulted a book or web page. Finally, I've been asked some very specific questions, such as what tcpdump command prints out DNS packets. This sort of thing was never required; it was always sufficient to refer to documentation.

So you see the dilemma that I (and some others face): there is no practical way for us to prepare for these interviews. It's a very hit-and-miss proposition: if we're lucky enough to be asked questions we happen to remember, we do fine; otherwise, we don't. But the interviews do not test whether we are competent.

I enjoyed this post, read it twice , then remembered my days when i was in Google interview process. The interviewers were amazing guys, passionate energetic and damn funny. I was not hired by them because i was falling in same category as your two java developers were :), then things changed a bit, not a bit, i can say things changed from bit to a byte.I am not more in that category. Atleast i think i am not, but who knows...:), may be google knows.

Hi, enjoyed reading your blog entry about the whole interview thingy. I am waiting to hear back from them after multiple rounds of interviewing, so just curious how long did it take for them to make you an offer from the time of your in-person interview at the campus?

I enjoyed your story and wisdom about working at Google! I have an in-person interview in 2 weeks with Google and I'm really excited at the prospect of working there. I'm sure I'm going to find energy, people smarter than I am, and people who wan t to leave work at the end of the day having "created things".
