Not one of the lovable Disney villains, in my opinion. But imagine her when she was younger.... if you can.

Submitted for the #CGPintor Art Jam on Disney villains.

I started out with rough gray - defining shapes and values. But rather than using some Photoshop Color layer afterwards, I applied Normal color right on top of it. I am pleasantly surprised how it turned out and have done something like this previously.

I had it in mind however to go for a watercolor feel. But I should've chosen bright colors and avoided starting it gray if I wanted that. Not one of the lovable Disney villains, in my opinion. But imagine her when she was younger.... if you can.

The Hollow Witch.

"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, “I will return to the house I left.” When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first." Luke 11:24-26

I intend to print this as a tarpaulin poster and post it outside my house. My house is painted white, and the gate is blue, so I figure a warm-colored banner would be more fetching.

Initially I thought of just putting the text. But then I figured graphic and painted comic book/cartoon imagery is something that can set apart my banner from all the rest on the streets of Metro Manila.I intend to print this as a tarpaulin poster and post it outside my house. The Lass With WingsThe Lass With Wings

Mon, 23 Nov 2009 05:53:05 PST

In Tagalog: Ang Mutyang May Pakpak.
This is an illustration taken from the story by the late Filipino children's writer Rene Villanueva. The story was published only in the papers.

Our organization "Ang INK" held its 18th Annual Exhibit: Forever Renever and featured several such works that were taken from Mr. Villanueva "unillustrated" stories. This was done in tribute for the man.

I took to making the wings mentioned in the story as devices because in the story - a farmer steals a pair and pretty much seduces the youngest of the three ladies. Gets her pregnant and all that.

The exhibit will be running until the end of November 2009. At the CCP Little Theater.

The approach for this piece was to press a more graphic appearance. Much less focus on the turning / sculpting of form and more focus on the composition, getting particular areas to stay within their value and not to introduce strong shadow. Thus it feels lighter than my other digital paintings. I also made it a point to keep the color palette light. In Tagalog: Ang Mutyang May Pakpak.

The animals were illustrated by me for the Victory Greenhills Family Camp. Each belongs to one of four teams during the camp. These were printed on tarpaulin banners, so keeping it simple was a plus.

I went fairly graphic with my illustrations for each team's totem animal. The Barracuda used sharp angles. The Gator was blockish. The Viper used spirals. The Panther used more of its actual form in a diagonal orientation. The animals were illustrated by me for the Victory Greenhills Family Camp. Each belongs to one of four teams during the camp. Illustrated this at home, and colored it LIVE on my laptop during the DOTS Entertainment event at Cyberzone, E-com Building.

Photoshop CS2 and Wacom Intuos 3.

Private Iris is actually a kid in the comic book. She is illustrated by Arnold Arre, and the comic is written by Jamie Bautista. Here's me doing a teen version. There should be teen version. Don't you think?

The artwork actually looks darker now that I look at it from my CRT monitor. Does it look dark to you?Illustrated this at home, and colored it LIVE on my laptop during the DOTS Entertainment event at Cyberzone, E-com Building.

Templesmith versus OrTemplesmith versus Or

Wed, 20 Aug 2008 03:47:34 PDT

Ben Templesmith versus Elbert Or. I took the reference photo when Ben was in Manila talking about his work at the College of Saint Benilde.

This was traced in Corel Painter. The two guys are also painted in Painter as well. The background and the branches are done in Photoshop. I was trying to remember what I could about Ben's style of slapping on textures, lighting effects, and general rendering technique - and attempted to apply it here.

Ben just likes to point - he's not really going up against Elbert. (image) Ben Templesmith versus Elbert Or. I took the reference photo when Ben was in Manila talking about his work at the College of Saint Benilde.

Should it fail against the many other entries, it still was good practice for him.

Did you know I actually TRIED to be in Ballistic Publishing's EXPOSE?

This is only the concept design prior to the actual piece that I submitted. I made use of the hijab and gave it a technological spin. I do not think it will be offensive, I hope not!

Have you ever seen anything like it? Let me know if you have. This was done 2005, and I'm pretty surprised it came out well. I think it was because I spent a good deal of time researching the hijab.Did you know I actually TRIED to be in Ballistic Publishing's EXPOSE?

Art of Joel Chua: Train AngelArt of Joel Chua: Train Angel

Fri, 29 Feb 2008 22:57:01 PST

This is going onto the Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan 2008 Catalogue. This printed out really REALLY too strong and almost gaudy. It looked very different from what I had on my monitor. But it was really an issue with the printer/paper.

As much as I like purple skies, I went for a typical blue one here, because I intended it to complement the train's own color. (It was initially more of a late afternoon setting.)

My student, Benedict, asked me how I came up with the idea: I first wanted to challenge myself, wanted to do something that had Filipino elements, something fantastic/romantic, dynamic, and told a story.

You can come up with the story from the painting. I should mention that the catalogue will be released some time February or March, the month of GRADUATION!!

Comments and criticism appreciated.

Pixel Pintura 2008 PosterPixel Pintura 2008 Poster

Mon, 25 Feb 2008 23:03:31 PST

This is the 2008 Pixel Pintura poster. I handle the Pixel Pintura workshops where I teach Digital Coloring and Digital Painting.

(Those are two separate workshops, located at my place in the Mandaluyong City.)

It's 6 sessions for Digital Coloring Pro and 6 also for Digital Painting Basics. 3 hours per session. Digital Coloring Basics is 4 sessions. You can visit www.pixelpintura.com for other details.

As for price, you can contact me via email, or by text at 0916-7481644 (Philippines only). Please contact me through Deviantart because I don't get a notice when I receive correspondence here.

My landline (632)7182328 has been dead since Feb 11, 2008. You may try to call, but no one will answer as it doesn't ring our phone. (Globelines even suspects their facility was sabotaged)

Anyway this poster's female model is referenced from my Guild Wars character in her Sunspear armor... she's a necromancer. Used Photoshop. When I do these paintings for my posters, they are usually in a smaller size than the actual print. This is the 2008 Pixel Pintura poster. I'm a self taught artist who's been into figurative and representative art since I held my first comic book. But just a few days ago I picked up a resource book about improving creativity, specifically for the fine artist. This book had a chapter on abstract art, something I was never taught in schools and workshops and not something I even taught myself!

But after reading about abstract art, I realized a whole new possibility to how do my illustrations... even my figurative and representative ones.

My hat's off to Ashely Wood for this illustration. (He's a guy) His work inspired me in this. I focused on shape, color and movement, trying to imbue my figure with more abstraction. I liked how it came out. I worked entirely from memory.

Deviant art categories just don't make sense... choosing one is like choosing the roundest orange from an orange tree.

Anyway... I like humorous illustration. This is one was done using digital ink and watercolor in Photoshop CS2. A simpler and more sincere approach to illustration - (sincere to me, at least) is what I'm trying to develop. I think each of us needs to keep it real when doing our art - and not get caught up comparing ourselves with others or forcing ourselves to produce work like others. The sooner you accept that, the more naturally your art will grow.

Just click this link to read Razekiel's journal to see what happens when you start comparing your art with those of others.Deviant art categories just don't make sense... choosing one is like choosing the roundest orange from an orange tree.

I initially tried using the same photo mash-up technique to just generate a character, but upon attempting to do so, nothing really happened. Mash-ups are much better at suggesting a complete scene, I think.

If the mash-up was a little more graphic, it may suggest a character, or a monster. So I may try a monster next, for Halloween's sake.1 hour and 20 minutes. Photoshop CS2 and Wacom tablet.

45 minutes. Photoshop CS2.

Similar process to Warlock Roc except this time I threw in photos and textures for the underpainting and used another set of brushes.

It felt a bit chinese as it was being developed... but maybe it was just me.

Concept art is fun to do, even more so if there's a purpose to it all - like a comic book, an animated feature, movie or what not. But if there is none, there's always DA.

I'm just testing if this thumbnail of Warlock Rock will appear, I'm rather new to DA: (image) 45 minutes. Photoshop CS2.
