Enjoy the autumn! Been a very wet and grey summer. Nice to see a stretch of fair weather.

Nice mosaic. Did you know the stained glass windows of the older cathedrals used ground-up precious stones to achieve their fantastic colors? One thing about getting around in Germany on a bicycle that was nice were all the little "connecting roads" that run between farm fields and through the forests. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like you're having a great time! I'm envious of your life out there. It makes me not fret about getting older when I might have some more free time to enjoy biking around some of the finer parts of Europe.

Thanks for the reply, your point is more clear ... though ... I think many of the true believers in the NSDAP also thought they were building a utopia of sorts. Utopian ideals become dangerous when politically active people allow themselves to believe that it is okay to break eggs (heads) to make their omelette.

I probably didn't think that sentence through enough. In the context of the whole post, though, I stand by the idea that there is a difference between left authoritarianism--in countries that are (still) trying to find the utopia of Marxism--and someone who would claim that fascism can come from the left. I was/am trying to make the point that fascism can only come from the right. Thanks for your thoughts.

You can have left authoritarianism, which is often the case in South America and, perhaps, even certain parts of Europe and Asia. Uh, yeah. I would classify Soviet communism and its Asian copies as "authoritarian" ... to say the least. To tell you the truth, this comment confuses me. If I get stood up against a wall and shot for some arbitrary reason by an authoritarian government, it really doesn't make a difference if the tool who shot me was a soldier of the left or the right. I mean, dead is dead, correct ? (And yeah, I understand what fascism is ... but having family who suffered under both systems makes me wonder how relevant the distinctions are in extremis.) Cheers!

Not worth the effort IMO. I miss my old "analog" 35-mm Pentax.

It’s as though you have to walk around in a thick, pressing atmosphere where the breath and stench of too many people crowded into too small a place doesn’t mix well with a grey sky that wants to annihilate you. Well described. It gets better when one is tightly packed into a bus or a Strassenbahn. Yes, those leaden grey skies. "When Clouds Attack" ...

The "big G" Government, from top to bottom needs a thorough shaking-out. Time to re-establish institutional ethics, and enforce their use in operations.

Anyone remember Schmuck? Actually, he was a staff officer for Panzerarmee Afrika who thought he was riding high after Kasserine but got shot by, of all people, a French soldier of XIX Corps in Tunisia ... "Ach, Die Franzosen noch kämpfen ?!" Yep, against the odds, they "noch kämpfen" ... funny all those twists and turns of history ... for all empires!

The German healthcare system is a pack of useless bastards. I've seen them, in essence, condemn elderly people to death on the basis of having reached "a proud age (seniority) in life". Whatever -- either state clearly that after Age "X", no special efforts will be made ... or honor The Oath and do whatever it takes to keep a person on this side. More Klugschisserie that is ever so convenient when one doesn't want to be bothered. Sour apples ... und wie. Cheers!
