The National Cynical Network - The Walrus Cover Medley New Music Video

Wed, 09 Jul 2008 12:00:00 -0400

A video collage for our audio collage featuring at least a dozen different versions of The Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" in the audio portion alone. The concept, as it came out, is what goes through a Beatles' fans head in the moment she gasps with delight while watching from the audience of The Ed Sullivan Show. Caught in a momentary time warp, she has a psychedelic vision of the future. Special appearance by J.R. "Bob" Dobbs of the Church of the Subgenius.

Music Video: National Cynical Network - You May Be Right

Tue, 09 Dec 2008 12:00:00 -0500

A music collage video about madness. This is a syntopical commentary, and expansive deconstruction of Billy Joel's song 'You May Be Right' (I May Be Crazy) in regards to Billy Joel's bipolar condition. Leitmotifs include: Bipolar as madness, madness as flight, the flight and fall of Icarus in Greek Mythology, madness as entertainment as evidenced through various cinematic psychopathic villains represented herein. Madness as escape. Madness as creativity, madness as destruction. Madness as strength. Madness ultimately as source, and the choice, of positive celebration. (Trivia Note - Phinny is actually singing the vocals on the audio track of this video, not Billy Joel).

NCN on Plundercast - I Don't Know

Tue, 01 Mar 2011 12:00:00 -0500

Originally conceived as a Puzzling Evidence Show tribute, this became partly about Unions, including the huge controversy and uprising in Wisconsin (at the time of it's making) regarding union-busting by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and his cohort David Koch (who is impersonated in a 'gone viral' crank call to Governor Walker by writer of The Buffalo Beast blog). Other portions are some multi-layered talking by Phineas mixed with music and almost all of the 'old Doktor' Subgenius hierarchy in yak tapes from yesteryear and modern-day news about Middle East uprisings. The result sound very Puzzling Evidence type of mix you can zone out on and appreciate as background music or as something to listen to attentively. Basically a gearing up to Phinny's appearance on the KPFA 'Puzzling Evidence Show' in the week after this show was originally aired. Also included are Union Label commercials from the late 70's / early 80's, Louis C.K. asking Donald Rumsfeld if he is a flesh-eating lizard via The Opie and Anthony Show, Radiohead's latest (new) single, some remixes from Old Nerdy Bastard's 'Geeky Music Remixed', George Carlin discussing cynicism and what he hopes for, the trailer for the bogus but brilliant E(x).T. sequel, an 'Another Brick in the Wall' versions medley and a long guided meditation sequence which is new. In 128kbps LAME encoded 3-hour mp3 format.

This week's show is a mix of mash-ups, songs, remixes, dubstep versions, collages and general variations of music by Eminem mixed with various (mostly) nerdcore pieces by 'Weird Al' Yankovic poking fun at rap music and keeping it more real than the original songs. Lots of material referring to the idea that Eminem is gay (somehow) and material from the new 'Weird Al' album 'Alpocalypse' (recommended!) as well as Yankovic 'interviewing' Eminem. 128kbps LAME encoded, 180 min. with credits read at end.

Mon, 01 Aug 2011 12:00:00 -0400

This is a special 4-hour mix that was made during the height of the debt ceiling crisis in Washington in the Summer of 2011 during the presidency of Barack Obama. It explores the notion of the 'Shock Doctrine' put forth by Naomi Klein in her book by that name and using material made from the documentary based on the book. This is interwoven and augmented by the Adam Curtis documentary 'The Living Dead' about the use of shock treatment in the CIA's involvement with the development of modern-day psychiatry in the late 50's and early 60's. Other pieces, throughout are by NCN, as well as songs by Bob Dylan, Blancmange, Bob Seger, Michael Jackson, George Carlin, Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, Coldplay, Radiodread, and others throughout. 128kbps LAME encoded mp3. 240 min. NCN, BCO and Univac - It's Game Time! (Narco Remix)

Tue, 06 Sep 2011 12:00:00 -0400

Recorded on 8.31.11, and broadcast live on DFM, this is originally a 2-hour show all about games. Phinny has done post-production work on it, boiling it down to just under 80 min. The original mix is available, check the link list in the listing associated with this podcast on the NCN site. This was part of UBRadio Salon which is heard on DFM out of Amsterdam each Wednesday at 4pm U.S. Pacific Time. We utilized a number of computers playing (mostly) video game samples and sound effects of games being played (there was a live UNREAL game going on at the time) game show theme music, and of course UNIVAC's 'Adventures in Science' for which he read from a 1981 book about video games. This show was great fun to do and I hope at least as much fun to listen to. The synthesized voices are live text-to-voice contributions via the DFM chatroom at the time.

Mon, 26 Nov 2012 12:00:00 -0500

This is a re-edited, re-mastering of our 2008 biographical tribute to the life and music of Freddie Mercury of the musical group Queen. The story is augmented with mods, mashups, remixes, deconstructions, effects, etc. of Queen's music. More narrative in its structure than usual Plundercasts, but still told somewhat out of sequence, this program examines Mercury's life from his childhood in Zanzibar, to the start of his career as an iconic rock star in the U.S., to his tragic death from AIDS in late 1991. This is a very heartfelt celebration of a man whom we never met but greatly admire and love, as did countless others all over the world. His music shall live on. NCN - Blade Running

Mon, 20 Jan 2014 12:00:00 -0500

Webcast on Plundercast and DFM (out of Amsterdam) January 19th, 2014--This is our musical tribute to the classic 1982 film noir cyberpunk masterpiece 'Blade Runner' and features many remixes of sounds and music from the film, many remixes (particularly of the driving 'End Titles' theme) of musical pieces from Vangelis' soundtrack, clips from the 2007 25th Anniversary 3 cd-set (still available) and having nothing at all to do with Negativland's 1994 'Blade Runner Remix' when the soundtrack finally came out in the U.S. Yes, much has happened since then, in terms of DIY re-interpretations of this work, and we have the best of the best (in our humble opinion) all under one roof in this much listened-to and well attended program (we got upwards of 25 listeners for the show's final cut). This program is a little bit different than the webcast version in that it includes a great piece called the 'Surprise Mix' of the End Titles theme done by ARKiV who was a listener to the program and contributed that track. Thanks, ARKiV! - 3 hour mix. 128kbps mp3 with full playlist and info in ID3 tags.

NCN - Songs to Haunt You

Tue, 28 Jan 2014 12:00:00 -0500

This program was webcast on January 26th, 2014--A collection of songs that have, more or less, a reputation for being 'haunting'. Some of these songs tell compelling and disturbing stories, others are more abstract and are more haunting in their tone. Almost all were mentioned in a recent Reddit thread about 'most haunting or bone-chilling songs'. Not for the faint of heart, some of these disturbing songs (like Immortal Technique's 'Dance with the Devil' here in its entirety) are NSFW. Listener discretion advised. These are pieces from various artists that will stick with you after listening. 3 hour program - 128kbps. Full playlist at Mixcloud and in ID3 tags of mp3.

NCN - The Eckhart Tolle Remix

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 12:00:00 -0400

Originally webcast on June 24th, 2012 on DFM and Plundercast--This program remixes a lot of material from spiritual leader Eckhart Tolle's 'The Power of Now' which advocates the stilling of, and non-identification with, the mind as a means to spiritual enlightenment. Many songs are used to illustrate and augment philosophical points, with Phineas popping in and out of the mix to channel Mr. 1:15, back announce, and express skepticism at the time, while praising Tolle's soft and compelling speaking voice. We since have come to believe that Tolle was right on many levels. Shades of light and shadow abound in this 3-hour mix.

Mon, 12 May 2014 12:00:00 -0400

This was webcast on Sunday, Mother's Day, May 11th, 2014 on DFM and Plundercast. Kind of a dark, but sometimes moving, mix about motherhood and Mommy issues. Mixed in: material from an old Negativland/Over the Edge show called 'Mom and Dad' and our offering to the Red Hand Dave tape compilation from the 80s which is probably our earliest collage work. - 3 hour mix. NCN - Last Tooth on the Left

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 12:00:00 -0400

Another mix in NCN's inimitable style, this time concerning teeth, tooth care and dentists. "How do you take care of your teeth?" The 1 hour radio edit of this program was heard on WREK in Atlanta on "Bob"'s Solacktime Funhouse. Originally webcast on Plundercast and DFM on November 27th, 2011 when we had to get that tooth in question extracted, this mix is remixed a little bit for July 09, 2014. Includes the piece 'The Klein vs. Gilmour Dentistry Suite' sprinkled into the initial comedy montage in the program. The suite compares Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's guitar playing style to a dentist's drill. Much comedy in here (with some possibly NSFW language) as well as all manner of music, novelty songs, mash-ups, collages, various memes and comic commentary as well as some disturbing material all in this almost 2 hour and 37 minute mix.

As webcast on July 20th, 2014: A full REDUX and Remix of our show from 03/24/14 detailing the first Malaysian flight MH370 that was lost, now updated to reflect the very tragic current events of the recent week namely passenger jumbo jet MH17 being shot down over the Ukraine. As before, this program examines the historical subject of lost planes and aviation mysteries in times of war and peace: from Amelia Earhart to the U2 spyplane and related Howland Island 'Over the Edge' material from 1992; also work by Larry Stepniak, Uncle Onan Canobite of the Church of the Subgenius, rx, our Bombscare program, and variations and theories relating to 'LOST' as well as music by The Hadron Big Bangers, surreal comedy from The Subgenius Show from The 1980s, new material from Porcupine Tree, and a number of leftover Negativland - U2 remixes that were NOT in our program 'NegatiVariations and Whatnot'! The final hour is the radio edit version of 'If Pigs Could Fly (The Swine Flu Show)' and does contain some Robin Williams (RIP) in the mix as it turned out, and is a slightly different mod or mix from what has been heard in the past, such as on "Bob"'s Slacktime Funhouse on WREK, Atlanta. Some portions may be NSFW. This was well-received and webcast on Dec. 14th, 2014, on NCN and DFM out of Amsterdam, in the midst of a big thunderstorm in California (which was in the midst of a drought). Wistful and moving works, elegantly blended, mostly punctuated by the soothing susurration of rainfall. - 3 hour mix. Includes Episode 13 of Midnight Voicejail: 'Weather'.

NCN - Anger Therapy

Tue, 27 Jan 2015 12:00:00 -0500

This program is about anger and was webcast on January 25th, 2015 on Plundercast and DFM. It is a hybrid show of the past un-released programs 'Escape from Anger' and 'Angry Music' along with some surprises from the current and recent era. This show seeks to be a cathartic release designed to soothe the savage beast-ness out in the listening ether. We are using the same graphic picture from the now defunct 'Angry Music' mix (sometimes these programs take years to truly develop into themselves). This mix spends time on remixed sequences philosophically examining anger along with inter-cut medley flourishes of mash-ups and other 90's era 'complaint rock' sets, interspersed with other tangential material - a 3 hour program.
