Tables within CSS sheets

Thu, 18 Aug 2011 03:49:17 GMT

I'm very new to CSS, so I have a question:When I used to make websites using HTML, I would "cut" up my banner image into smaller segments and then reassemble them using a table.I wanted to take my current banner, "cut out" the top left corner and insert a small animated .gif in that corner, with the same color background in the cell..Is it possible to do this with CSS, and if so, how?Currently, this is the code I am using (thanks to cartonage and their LJ - I would ask for their help, but they are on hiatus ^_^)  /*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------    Header - you can add a header image with either #header or .headerimage --------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/               #header {                         width: 100%;                         padding: 10px 0px 20px 0px;                         margin: 0px;                         text-align: center;                         font-family: "Verdana", "Lucida Sans";                         font-size: 12px;                         font-weight: bold;                         letter-spacing: 2px;                         border-style: solid;                         border-color: #00B0C7;                         border-width: 1px;                         background-color: #000000;                         color: #FFFFFF;                         }                 .headerimage {                         position: relative;                         width:  800px;                         height: 400px;                         margin-left: auto;                         margin-right: auto;              [...]

page filter?

I've searched around a little and was wondering if there is a way to have a div container appear for X amount of seconds after the page is opened?

CSS cursor

Thu, 04 Feb 2010 22:45:43 GMT

How can I get a custom cursor (little PNG to be exact, not that it matters) to be in effect for the entire viewport? Right now, I have the style attached to BODY. But the BODY element does not extend all the way to the left/right/top of the viewport, and when the content is short, there's a biiiig space at the bottom too, where the cursor reverts to standard.

Help??

Thu, 10 Sep 2009 18:38:32 GMT

long story short: I'm trying to make a CSS for my journal with a Nightwish theme. I got a (quite outdated) style sheet from deviantart.com (which may very well have been my first mistake) and I replaced the images it had with my own. I get on here and IT WONT WORK!! My journal gets all pushed over on the right with maybe an inch showing and my background's all in a line down the center and my header image just sits there, laughing at me. I'll be the first to admit I dont know CRAP about CSS really, so I have no idea what went wrong!
Could somebody help me??

All the CSS junk and instructions are in this journal.

thank you very much for your help

Fri, 04 Sep 2009 12:09:00 GMT

Hello

Hope someone can help with this problem,
I'm new to css...  so forgive noob questions.

I cant get this image to align properly

(image)

blah

css:

.contentYellow{
float:right;
width:200px;
text-align:center;
padding:12px 0 0;
}

It works fine if there are no

tags around the image, but the cms I am using puts the

tags in. I have tried .contentYellow p{ align:center } and .contentYellow img{ align:center }

Thanks in advance

Mystery Gap

Wed, 22 Jul 2009 18:06:14 GMT

Hi all!

Have a look at this page: http://thelastdaysofdecadence.com/saturdays/index.html

Viewed in IE it looks exactly as it should, but in FF there's a mystery gap underneath the main content div (dark grey) where the blue grey background shows through.

I'm stumped as to why this could be. Any thoughts would be greatly welcomed.

Super Dumb Question

Sat, 18 Jul 2009 21:05:27 GMT

Ok, I've got a super dumb question, but I figured I'd ask rather than not.

Hypothetical (or not so much...) situation: Let's say for instance I have a form that was pre-generated and given to me. I don't have access to change the form, but I do have access to skin it. I get everything all nice and hunky dorey based off of the design I was given, until I get to the submit button.

Now, keep in mind, I can't change the actual HTML on this form. All I can do is apply a style sheet to it.

Can the value (and preferably the arrow too) of be changed via CSS?

Like I said, duuuuuuumb question. But humor me?

DIV PROBLEM!

Sun, 12 Jul 2009 18:50:32 GMT

live test page: http://www.haremjewel.com/ulli.html

In firefox & safari my codes work perfectly!

but in IE, my div's are not lined up where they need to be.

(image) (image)

note: if you go to the live page, and click around on the nav links, all the pages are fine in all browsers, only problem is: in safari my nav links don't not work (besides home page) because my div's are overlapped. THE ONE TEST PAGE GIVEN ABOVE, is me trying to change my overlapping divs to divs next to eachother.

I now just can't get them to be in the center of all browsers. help!

CSS Centering

Wed, 10 Jun 2009 22:25:38 GMT

I'm doing some work for a client. Validating HTML / CSS -- He's working in transitional HTML.

I'm coming up with a problem.

Here's the page: http://www.fireplace-advisor.com/clean_version/wood-burning-patterns-template.html

Client wants:
"Cool Wood Burning Patterns" and the google ads to be centered.

I've tried a couple things to center them but they don't seem to be working. Any ideas?

Other problem:

Original Page: http://www.fireplace-advisor.com/
Page after making code valid: http://www.fireplace-advisor.com/clean_version/index_clean.html

You'll notice there are differences in the appearance. Specifically the fact the purple side bar continues on the original version, but doesn't on the other. Also, the size at which the page is displayed is different as well.

Any idea how to make them be the same.

LAST POST i promise!

Mon, 08 Jun 2009 21:02:41 GMT

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has given me tips and advice to fix my website... SO FAR, with the adjustments I have made, It is working exactly how I want it too! at least in IE, firefox, and safari!

-all of the gray text boxes are centered in the page, with text aligned left, and move with page size
-the pictures are centered and move with the page size

thank you! and if anyone else has a different browser please check it out and tell me if anything seems out of place or weird... http://www.haremjewel.com

the only pages completed are the home/main page, booking, and contact. Thanks you guys

anything?

Mon, 08 Jun 2009 17:36:00 GMT

Okay, I fixed a few things on my site, I used http://validator.w3.org/ to see if everything was ok, and my booking & contact pages passed completely. My main haremjewel page had 3 errors, but those 3 codes are not mine... they are part of bluvoda's codes that they will not let me delete, but it doesnt affect anything on ym page, so I didnt care since all my codes were all good. BUT all the text and pictures are perfectly in all the right spots, EXCEPT for IE... haha safari and firefox are fine, but in IE, my main picture and text are on the left hand side.. what codes should I put in that will center the box and my picture without using the center tag, because that center tag messes up the view on safari and firefox! my page is http://www.haremjewel.com

thank you for anyone who can help!

compilation of @font-face definitions?

Fri, 29 May 2009 20:01:40 GMT

Is there any place that compiles font metrics for use in @font-face declarations? With this CSS becoming more widely implemented, I'd like to be able to specify the metrics of the fonts I want to use, and let the browser do best-match if my choice is not available.

IE6 grr - I need :first-child help!

Thu, 16 Apr 2009 10:09:09 GMT

Hi,

I have a real problem and I need some help! I have a content managed site where I cannot edit the HTML so my only options are javascript and CSS. I have a really simple menu which basically looks like this:-

<*ul>
<*li>First line<*/li>
<*li>Second line<*/li>
<*/ul>

(without the stars)

I want to make the first li display: none which I've done in with ul li:first-child {display: none} but of course this doesn't work in good old IE6!

Can anyone point me in the direction of a pure css/javascript way to do this? I've been all over google and a lot of people suggest adding a class (which I can't do because I can't edit the HTML) and the only JS way of doing it that I've found I can't make work :(

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks :)

Edit: OK, http://dean.edwards.name/weblog/2008/01/ie7-2/ saved my life lol

Dumb Question

Thu, 05 Mar 2009 17:07:27 GMT

Is there a css attribute that will make text flow from top to bottom?

Example:
t
o
p

t
o

b
o
t
t
o
m

I'm probably not describing this very well.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Help!

Wed, 04 Mar 2009 14:05:13 GMT

I've been asked to create a standard XHTML/CSS website by a client, which I can do no problem, but they've decided they want to have a couple of pages that they update themselves using some kind of CMS system.

I really don't want to go down the full CMS route (Joomla etc) because that will involve php/databases etc and contribute is full of bugs IMO.

Does anyone know of a (preferably free) system or method I can use so they can edit the text on just a couple of pages?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

CSS tags being ignored

Tue, 24 Feb 2009 19:13:34 GMT

Okay, this is starting to drive me bonkers.

I have a dropdown menu, I've set up the styles yet part of the declarations within one style are being ignored.

You can see the sample here: http://www.pezessed.com/temp/navigation.html
CSS: http://www.pezessed.com/temp/layout.css

I've got the following CSS for the dropdown menu. The bolded tags are the ones not working. I know it's linked properly because if I change the font size, then the font size changes in the drop downs. It's taking the information from the ul#topnav li a

ul#topnav li ul li a {
text-transform : none;
padding: 1px 5px;
display : block;
font-size : 11px;
text-align : left;
}

Any ideas? I'm about ready to rip out my hair. I'm sure it's something really small and really dumb, but I can't seem to figure it out.

mac tutorial for ftping rebol based bliki to server host

Fri, 20 Feb 2009 19:41:29 GMT

where can I find helpful step-by-step ftp procedures for installing a cgi bliki? I recently registered my domain name and I successfully installed Links overlapping

Sat, 31 Jan 2009 22:45:28 GMT

How do I fix this?!

It's driving me mad.

Wed, 28 Jan 2009 09:53:02 GMT

I'm working on a efiction skin and stuck with a problem. I hope you guys can help me out.

Here's the link to the skin I'm working on: http://worldofx.de/fanfics//index.php?skin=dev

If you hover the menu, the link text is yellow just as the background. All I want is that the text will be white right when you hover the li box, not just the text itself. I have no idea how to get that done.

#menu {
border-width: 0 0 0 0;
border-style: solid;
border-color: #EFF0E8;
}
#menu, #menu ul {
margin: 10px 1px 0 1px;
padding: 5px;
text-align: left;
}
#menu li {
list-style-type: none;
display: inline;
white-space: nowrap;
padding: 20px 10px;
margin: 1px;
background-color: #484848;
}
#menu li:hover {
list-style-type: none;
display: inline;
white-space: nowrap;
padding: 20px 10px;
margin: 1px;
color: #fafafa;
background-color: #D7C96F;
}
#menu a {
color: #D7C96F;
font-weight: normal;
font-size: 13px;
letter-spacing: 0;
text-transform: none;
}
#menu a:hover {
color: #ffffff;
border: 0;
}
#menu #current {
border-width: 0;
border-style: solid;
border-color: #F5F6F0;
color: #616161;
}

Sorry for my bad english. Hope you understand me nevertheless.^^

I have a maploco counter on my profile which gets very little hits. I use to be able to receive higher hits when I included the < img src> code in the main blog page, even though I hid it there from view. About a month ago, I noticed that the visits have drastically reduced. Although the terms of use exclaim that a user must include the image on their page, I feel that I am complying with this regulation since I have the image on my profile. Is there a way to make my maploco reflect the number of visits that the main page receives without include a picture of the map itself on that page?

Mystery Drop Down Menu Bug in IE 6.0

Wed, 24 Dec 2008 07:53:27 GMT

Hey folks! So I'm a dinosaur of design trying to get up to speed and learn CSS. I started designing a drop down menu inspired by A List Apart's code which is actually for a vertical menu despite stating that it is horizontal. I'm trying to design a truly horizontal one so have made some changes to the code. My first fail occured when trying to use divs and floats for the menu itself. Couldn't get that to work so I gave in and used a table. Now the code works fine (more or less) in Mozilla but in IE 6 does a bunch of crazy stuff. I've heard of drio down menus working strangely in IE 6 before, but am not sure what can be done to help. Any ideas? Anyone know of a good fix for this? Sorry my code probably looks ridiculous but I am 100% new to css. Code behind Untitled Document [...]

Wed, 10 Dec 2008 07:42:59 GMT

My apologies, as this isn't specifically about CSS, though it's tangentially related...

I'm looking to redesign my website, and was looking for some inspiration. I was hoping someone might be able to suggest some sites with ideas for different layouts/designs. I'm not looking for code or graphics or anything, just ideas and inspiration.

Googling website layouts just gives me cookie-cutter stuff meant to be downloaded and customized...
