How Star Wars Ruined Educational Films

Tue, 25 Nov 2008 22:39:00 -0600

(image) While the blockbuster Star Wars ignited the imaginations of a whole country and brought science-fiction to popular culture, there was an ugly side to this phenomenon. Science-fiction became a gimmick and educational film producers were quick to adopt anything that would get kids' attention. The A/V Geeks present a DVD of educational films that feature sci-fi elements to make their points - often creating a bizarre, muddled mess of a film. Films include - Freedom 2000, Verbstar, Staying Away From Strangers, Lintola, Creatures of the Land and more!

The Shoplifter (1964) Highway Safety Films

Thu, 03 Jul 2008 23:02:00 -0600

Shows in detail techniques used by amateur and professional shoplifters and explains how alert employees can prevent thefts. While this film was made for retail employees, the film really is a how-to for potential shoplifters. The biggest hauls are made by women who can carry up to 25 pounds of meat, cigarettes, typewriters or shoe polishers under their dresses. If you are a store owner, its hard not to watch this without assuming that everyone is your store to steal from you...

How to Build an Igloo (1951)

Thu, 03 Jul 2008 22:53:00 -0600

A demonstration of igloo building in Canada's far north, showing how the site is collected and how blocks of ... snow are used. Presents a step-by-step demonstration by two Eskimos of how to build an igloo, showing how the site is selected and how blocks of snow are used to make a snug shelter against the Arctic cold. Explains why the snow must be carefully chosen, why the blocks are built up in a spiral and how an igloo is ventilated. An awesome film!

I'm told by an insider at Adult Swim's Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! that the following clip ("What Do You Call That?" is a tribute to "Crash! Bang! Boom!" (seen below):

Great Job!

An educational film featuring a chorus of voices introducing 11 percussion instruments including a groovy rock band. Very catchy/annoying film.
