I totally agree that new mothers need more support to get breastfeeding off to a good start. I'm actually going through training right now with my local WIC office to become a breastfeeding help volunteer.

I do think that the "risks of formula" ads are provocative, and yet I also feel that given the state of breastfeeding rates in our country, provocation is to a certain extent justified. Not guilt -- not directed at an individual woman who needs to supplement -- but provocation, to stir up the hospitals that offer formula packs at discharge and the employers who don't provide private, clean spaces for employees to pump.

Toronto has a pretty good ad campaign for breastfeeding. It is a cartoon-like drawing of a whole bunch of babies with the caption "born to be breastfed." I think they are just trying to get across that it is normal to breastfeed, without fussing around with a bunch of half-baked science or guilt trips (at l
east not overt ones, us new parents can weedle a guilt trip out of almost any message!).
