4K theaters and Blu-ray? Mon, 02 Nov 2009 20:22:05 GMT So I have a few questions about the 4K theaters and blu-ray. I see that a lot of people are really impressed by the 4K theaters/projectors. Obviously 4K is more that 1080p resolution wise but also a bigger screen so is it really better quality than blu-ray? How is the film/movie presented...hard drive, film, or what? If it is a hard drive then how big and what is the bit rate and is the audio on it DDTHD or DTSMA? And lastly recently I saw that the Wizard of Oz was playing ay my local theater and the ads kept repeating that it was blu-ray. Now I have a 106" screen but if it was a real blu-ray then on their HUGE screen would have been that good?
Do we really need a format beyond DVD9 for HD?? Mon, 02 Nov 2009 18:03:26 GMT After experimenting with various methods of video compression, I've come to the conclusion that the whole bluray market is a farce. It's possible to fit a whole bluray movie onto a dual layer DVD while maintaining 1080p resolution and image quality. The AVCHD codec is good enough that even with the reduced bitrate, the image is still stunning. I did a little test on my 50" plasma 1080p display (Panasonic S1). I put in the original bluray disc into my player (PS3), then played the same movie from a DVD9, which was of course compressed. None of the videophiles in the room could distinguish between these two images. I'm searching for a compelling argument contrary to this, and have come to the place with the most expertise: avsforum. I can see things like maintaining lossless audio encoding, or having extras, but these are all superfluous items in my opinion. I've never met anyone that can really tell the difference between Dolby Digital 5.1 and TrueHD. Also, why make a whole new format market just to stuff some extras onto a disk? Just give me the movie, and if that's all that there is, all we need is DVD9 and a good codec, which we have already.
Looking to Send "Screen Capture" to WDTV-Live. Sun, 01 Nov 2009 15:40:02 GMT I'm looking to send real time "Desktop" video and audio to my WDTV-Live over my home network via software. (As in sending what you see and hear on the screen as a video stream) I'm running Windows 7. It will share folders and Library with the the WDTV but not Live screen captures. The WDTV-Live will see Media Server Software devices (like TVERSITY and Playon) and Media Share folders. Does anyone know of a software package that would do that?

Ripped series from Blu-Ray - how to burn the episodes onto one BD-R? Thu, 29 Oct 2009 15:14:05 GMT I've ripped my first series (Pushing Daisies) to my Popcorn Hour into .ts files. I'm looking to rip just the episodes from Star Trek TOS however my question is since each episode rips individually - how do I burn the set of episodes to one BD-R? I can convert each file to an ISO and then burn however how can I combine them into one file so I can burn the set onto one disc?
Are Dolby TruHD and DD Plus on all BDs? Thu, 29 Oct 2009 13:49:37 GMT I have yet to jump into Blu-Ray and since it might affect changes in my audio system I do am interested to know if the lossless Dolby codec and Dolby Plus are standard on all BD discs (5.1 is oK). If not, then does anyone know what percentage of movies do have DHD and DD+? If this is already in a thread or sticky please ID it for me. Thanks.

Windows Video Players Advanced Shuffle Fri, 16 Oct 2009 01:58:50 GMT Does anyone know of a multimedia player with advanced shuffle features? Here is what I am trying to accomplish: I have a bunch of wake, skate, n snowboard videos on my pc and I want to be able to play sections of each video for a fixed interval of time (i.e. 5 min) then jump to the next file. Like a scan feature on a car stereo. The catch is that I don't want it to play the first 5 minutes of each video, I just want it to randomly jump to different sections of different videos - like a party shuffle mode. Has anyone come a cross a program with the potential to achieve what I am trying to do? Any ideas would be great. I know I could separate all of my videos into fragments but I don't want to waste my time with that....:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Question/poll re display gamma & Blu-ray/DVD authoring... Fri, 16 Oct 2009 00:25:19 GMT If you have experience with professional Blu-ray or DVD authoring (or have researched the subject), your input would be appreciated on this poll (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1182547) in the Display Calibration forum re the display/decoding gamma used by the film/TV production industry for mastering such content. ~30 folks have responded so far, and the results are a bit mixed, with about 1/3 selecting the 2.2-2.22 range, and roughly 60% choosing a range of about 2.2-2.5 or an average of 2.35-2.4. Trying to get a little better feel for standard industry practices to aid in making better display adjustment decisions. Thanks sincerely.
Novel idea for future cinema I made Mon, 12 Oct 2009 12:09:30 GMT There are four squares that form a single large square, each square tile has it's own: smell, scenery, sound. When you move from one square floor tile to the next the scenery, sound, smell changes. There is four unique sets of sound, smell, scenery since there are four floor tiles. Within the floor tiles is a rumble feature that can steer you to go to a different tile if the entertainment requires that. The picture uses Sharp's "Dual View" technology, which displays a different screen image depending on viewing position. The "Dual-View" LCD technology allows two different pieces of information to be displayed in the left and right viewing directions of the screen. The display changes when the screen is viewed from the left and from the right. http://www.techjapan.com/Article1070.html The size of the display would be a 180 degree curve display, so large the 4 floor tiles would fit within the arc the display formed. The rectangle of the display would not be visable easily if standing on either of the two tiles nearest the middle of the display. Ideally the picture would be high resolution 3D with no glasses necessary. The audio uses JVC Near Speaker Surround Technology. The new technology applies JVCs unique digital signal processing to sound reproduced with low volume from a single speaker enclosure placed close in front of a listener. The listener enjoys impressive surround sound on par with a multi-channel speaker system without heavy noise leakage into the surrounding environment. Reduce sound leakage up to 56% through low volume sound reproduction - Users enjoy surround sound reproduction from the speaker without worrying about sound leakage to the surrounding environment, even in the middle of night. http://corporate.jvc.eu/pdf/en/near-speaker.pdf Smell-O-Vision , also known as Smell-O-Rama, was a system that released odors during the projection of a film, or issued a viewer with a card to scratch at indicated points, so that the viewer could "smell" what was happening in the movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smell-O-Vision The video picture changes with "Dual View", once you step into a new tile. Using Near Speaker Surround, the new audio becomes audible once you step into the new tile. The use of Smell-O-Rama would work like the audio and video so the smell changes depending on which tile your standing on. The ability to co-ordinate a team using conference video streaming would be possible. Where one person has access to various team members cameras on their equipment and seeing this can then relay intelligence to them through audio on what the other team member saw or their camera saw. This would make team games like Socom or Call of Duty more fun. Sample picture of what I'm envisioning Image: http://thumbnails18.imagebam.com/5206/f1aa2752057619.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/f1aa2752057619) If you want to share the experience then scale the size of the monitor and floorboard so many people can be in a single tile at one time. The only problem with this is you would need to stand, or you could one only one set of sight, sound and smell and use the whole screen for a 3d movie while you sit down. Then when you want to play videogames or see some novel scenery like a hike or river raft etc then you could use the full potential of the system for them. |
