Film to PAL transfer

Sat, 21 Nov 2009 22:13:09 GMT

What is the most common method (used on A class titles) to "convert" film (24p) source to PAL master? Is it speeding up, framerate conversion? Thanks, Andrew

How do you know if a Blu-ray is interlaced?

Thu, 19 Nov 2009 20:15:43 GMT

I have bought a Blu-ray which according to BDInfo.exe is interlaced (1080i), but the cover states it should be progressive. Maybe it is "flagged" incorrectly which I assume would cause BDInfo to report it as interlaced? How can I know for sure? Is there a method for finding out for sure, or is BDInfo reliable in this regard?

R&B Films - New Project - HDTV Calibration & Demo Disc

Thu, 19 Nov 2009 14:16:05 GMT

We are working on a new project for next year. I have spoken about creating a disc like this in the past. We are now finally getting around to it. Basically, the disc has Three (3) primary types of content on it plus a bonus section that fall under one of the other three. I cannot speak much about it just yet. We will most likely announce this at CES if all goes well. However, I do want to know what folks here would like to see in a basic setup disc for HDTV Home Theater. All Set-Up would be 1080/24p with one "jaggies" Test for 1080i. Is 720p a factor for anyone? It seems that there really are no true 720p monitors and they all must scale even if it is just a little bit to display a 720p image. This makes 720p tools a bit of an issue according to me techs. Outside of the basic tools, what would folks on AVS like to see with respect to more advanced AV Tools as well as demo content? Albeit the disc is targeted to a broad market, input from an important segment of our target audience is greatly appreciated. Richard J. Casey Executive Producer R&B Films, Ltd.

Upgrade your DVD's to Blu-ray with Dvd2Blu

Thu, 19 Nov 2009 01:36:55 GMT

From blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3749) * Warner Launches DVD2BLU Program Posted November 17, 2009 09:40 AM by Josh Dreuth Warner Home Video has announced that they have launched a new program which allows owners trade in their Warner DVD titles for Blu-ray upgrades for as little as $7.95. To take advantage of the program, owners will be required to identify which titles they want to upgrade through the DVD2Blu site, and then mail-in their DVD discs to show proof of ownership. In 4-5 weeks they will receive Blu-ray copies of those same titles. Dorinda Marticorena, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing and High Definition, Warner Home Video, commented, "DVD2Blu is a great way for consumers to start or expand their Blu-ray Disc collection. We're launching the program with a wide range of titles that will appeal to a broad audience. In the coming months, we're looking to expand the program and make additional titles available." The program works similar to Warner's previous Red2Blu program which allowed HD DVD owners to trade in their discs for Blu-ray versions. Upgrade prices range from $7.95 to $9.95, depending on the titles selected, and will include free shipping with any order over $25 (a prepaid label is provided to mail in your DVDs to Warner). Currently, there are over 50 titles eligible for this upgrade program, with more being added in the weeks to come. To participate, please visit http://www.dvd2blu.com/ and start upgrading to Blu-ray!*

Suggestions for getting Blue Ray content from PC to TV

Mon, 16 Nov 2009 16:04:20 GMT

I am very inexperianced in this realm and was hoping for suggestions. I hope I posted this in the right forum... I want to be able to watch BD movies I have stored on the hard drive of my computer on my HDTV. My computer is a few years old and I do not think I can hook it up to my HDTV and maintain the HD content. I thought maybe my best route was to simply burn the movies on disk. If so, do I need any special hardware such as a BD burner for my PC or can I just download software. If this is the best route is there anything special I need to look for when I purchase a BD player? Thanks for the help.

where can I buy or download? World's Coastlines from Above

Sat, 14 Nov 2009 15:26:25 GMT

World's Coastlines from Above - series of 10 episodes (first season) shot in HD and showing for the past year on HDNet and maybe other channels as well. If anyone has ideas on getting this series somehow, please let me know. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were available on Amazon. Rick

This dvd rental model sounds nice

Thu, 12 Nov 2009 01:17:35 GMT

Why not have a dvd store that loans a memory stick to it's customers. Each memory stick can hold a blu ray movie, so it is 50GB memory stick. The customer tells the dvd store which movie they want and they put it on their memory stick. The customer sticks the memory stick into their dvd player and the memory stick only plays the movie, it cannot be transferred to the dvd player. The customer must bring the memory stick back to the dvd store to be erased or else get late fees. Then the dvd store only has to buy one movie, rip it to their pc and use that copy multiple times distributing it to their customers. It can be expensive or cheap as you need to make a profit and generate interest in product. Then when you sell the movie you sell the blu ray disk, not memory stick, so you can sell it at cost or more for profit.

Managed copy disks out after Dec 4th?

Thu, 12 Nov 2009 00:27:43 GMT

Is i true that December 4th is the date for all disks to implement the code necessary to allow for managed copy? Does that mean all new releases released after that date will be managed copy ready?

Is the future finally looking Blu...?

Wed, 11 Nov 2009 19:17:08 GMT

Has Blu-ray come far enough in the near two years since the format war ended to finally silence the critics? I think the future is looking Blu for following reasons: 1 - Profile 2.0 Players prices are coming down in price rapidly. 2 - New releases are finally seeing economy of scale pricing. Some 'A-list' new releases are streeting for $20 or below. UP, Ice Age 3, Transformers 2, HP 6, Star Trek, etc. 3 - Catalog titles are being priced appropriately. Some great deals out there. 4 - Studios are firmly behind the format. Every major new studio release is getting a BD release. 5 - Filmmakers are excited about the format. Martin Scorsese recently addressed a panel at Blu-Con 2.0 extolling the ability of Blu-ray to capture the film grain in its presentation. Hopefully this resonates with attendess that are responsible for doing the transfer. Also special features are being done specifically with the BD in mind such as Warner's IME. With UP and Monsters Inc being released yesterday I think we are moving full steam ahead with a high quality HD experience. Don't get me wrong I think streaming has a future, but for the average user I still think streaming/downloading is still to complex a task for a non techy type.

Merge .mov and convert to .mp4

Sun, 08 Nov 2009 13:06:18 GMT

Hi, I'm on MacOSX 10.5 and currently working on a little video project. I must admit my ignorance on the subject is comparable to my grandma asking how to send an email. So, please, be nice ! I have several .mov videos taken with my Canon HG10 at the highest resolution (which according to Quicktime Movie Inspector is 1888x1062 - FPS 29.97). Now I need to a) merge all of them into one file and b) convert the output onto a much lighter but still good quality format (H.264 mp4?). I spent a good few hours on iMovie but since I don't need to edit the video it looked like I was pretty much wasting my time. Could anyone give me a quick 1-2-3 on how to do the above (hopefully there's some "lamers" solution out there)? Cheers!

4K theaters and Blu-ray?

Mon, 02 Nov 2009 20:22:05 GMT

So I have a few questions about the 4K theaters and blu-ray. I see that a lot of people are really impressed by the 4K theaters/projectors. Obviously 4K is more that 1080p resolution wise but also a bigger screen so is it really better quality than blu-ray? How is the film/movie presented...hard drive, film, or what? If it is a hard drive then how big and what is the bit rate and is the audio on it DDTHD or DTSMA? And lastly recently I saw that the Wizard of Oz was playing ay my local theater and the ads kept repeating that it was blu-ray. Now I have a 106" screen but if it was a real blu-ray then on their HUGE screen would have been that good?
