I find the most comfortable seat in my house, the one I have 'preened' for the purpose. I have it turned slightly to the wall to help me ignore all else in life. With the able, graceful and gentle hand of a mother I lay my babe down at the breast. As he suckles I run my hand over his velvet hairline. He drinks in the sweet nectar of my milk and I drink in his awesome beauty. I carefully commit every moment to memory. My breasts tingle with the sensation of let down and I hear a shift in his guzzle. What a moment, what a joy, what a blessing. To me, in this moment, there is nothing else in the world. Just my babe at my breast 'tis all!

Thanks to everyone who replied!

Jo - wishing you the hugest luck to achieve your dream of motherhood and breastfeeding.

Jacqui - hoping that next time round is wonderful for you and your bub.

Kim - you wouldn't believe the number of mums who replied to the survey for the book, saying that they'd boiled their expressing tackle to smithereens. I'm guilty myself...

I think the best thing is that breastfeeding is free.

I discovered that after I finished breastfeeding, (I was pregnant and sick) and in a fit of preggie brain forgot to put water in the steam steriliser and fried all the bottles I owned and it cost me over $80 to replace everything.

I'm not winning the book am I?

Breastfeeding was such a disaster with my daughter. She wouldnt latch on, the midwives were too pushy and made me uncomfortable! I desperately tried the best I could to breastfeed but i found it so stressfull so after expressing for 2 weeks I had had enough! I was happy and sad at the same time.

But next time round I will try my hardest to give it another go. I want to feel that special closeness and bond that only a mother and baby can have. These moment i missed out on with my first. This time i might feel a bit more comfortable having been through it all before....

I will Just have to wait and see.

Jacqui

The entire breastfeeding experience is just so holistic in purpose. It is my baby meeting me, head on, and without constraint. It is about my baby drawing life force from me and growing; physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is about me being in absolute awe of my own body and what it is capable of. It is about building a relationship with my baby that comes from spending hours of time nestled together, gazing at one another, transfixed. It is a once in a lifetime experience to give my baby the absolute best start in life, without a doubt.

Hi Rach,
You asked what I liked about breast feeding, Rach I have to say with Jimi (No. 1) I was not so successful but with Oli(No.2), it was full on.

The experience was very peaceful, I felt cocooned in a beautiful way.
Of course the other thing I loved, was when babe guzzled so much and came up for air, he was drunk on the milk and would fall asleep in beautiful little angelic way.

Congrats on the book, I am so proud for you, Craig and your mum.

Love
Eysie.

The thing I most love about breastfeeding.... actually, can I say 2?

The first is that my 7 month old is at the "distractable" stage, and WILL NOT feed unless he's holding my (long) hair - as soon as he feels my hair in his hand he turns his head and latches on straight away! Quite annoying at times, but very cute!

The second is when I'm feeding and I glance at my husband and I find he's sitting watching us and going "awwwwww". A lovely family moment :)

I think the best thing about breastfeeding was having lunch-on-tap, as it were! No messing about with bottles and sterilising things, just unhook the bra and away we go.

Oh, and the poos, breastfed baby poos are so much easier on the nose than toddler poos.

Everyone else has written about bonding with their child haven't they?

Sigh!

The best thing that I have enjoyed and still am enjoying about breastfeeding, is the bond that only I can share with my child/children. As well as knowing the nutritional value in breastmilk. I especially love the "drunk" look once they have completed a feed and dozed on it also. As im am now feeding my last child, it is definitely something thats worth cherishing for me.

I love feeding. I fed my three children for at least 11 months each. I am now feeding my 21 month old. He doesn't feed as much now but its special when I see he still enjoys it.
Its a special way that I as a mother can bond with my child while giving nutrients. I can also speak and teach at the same time. Its the ultimate in multi tasking!

With their mouth open wide;
they begin to dive;
straight for that breast;
there's no stopping their quest.

Their aim is always quite precise;
their mouth on the nipple like a vice;
sucking ferociously, don't distract;
if you want your nipple left intact!

The time comes and off they fall;
across your lap they do sprawl;
they look up at you with a drunky smile;
and i makes breastfeeding so worthwhile!!

The best thing about breastfeeding is not only passing on these wonderful things found in breastmilk, but also the beaming milky grins, gorgeous milky breath and very strange baby yoga that occurs, and knowing that it is the best thing in my baby's life, both nutritionally and from a comfort perspective.

Cheers, Kat (breastfeeding my toddler for 18 months proudly!)

Hi, it's Gab (the one who emailed you!)
This is a tricky cos for me it's a question that just about needs a novel as a reply! :D
The best thing about breastfeeding for me is that it's Perfect, Whole and Complete.
It's everything my babies need -
it's the perfect mix of ingredients at just the right temperature, it's nature's baby medicine and gives instant comfort to any crying baby.
I love that it's all just there.. the intricacy but the simplicity of it all. Our bodies just do it, the babies just know to suckle, but it's a miracle that I marvel at whenever I'm feeding.
I love the unspoken communication that goes on between me and my babies and the feeling of giving and receiving we share at the same time while gazing at each other.
I love the touch, the closeness and the nurturing I am providing.
Ok, I think i'd better stop about now or I'll never stop :D
To end, you just can't improve on such perfection and I'm just so grateful to be a woman because I get to give birth AND breastfeed! :D :D

(This is just one thing I loved, too many for just one favourite!)

That ferocious suckling when first attached, slowing down to a contented suckle when the edge was off their hunger.

The best thing about breastfeeding is the bonding between mother and baby. Not to mention its the most natural thing to do.
What else is there to say. Its my baby and I'll do it my way. :)

The best thing I enjoy about breast feeding is, I know I am giving my child a chance to have proper nutrition, and boosting their immune system. It's the most natural start in life a child can have. :)
