Diary of a lost dog.

Better but Still Hungry

Well, I feel a little better today. So I think my sickness is gone. I probably just ate something bad. I guess I need to be a little more careful next time. Yeah, right. I'm a dog. I eat almost anything. Especially when I'm really hungry.

The Dream

While I took my nap I had this dream about Sadie... or maybe it was Sweetie, another dog...

I haven't been feeling so good lately. I think I'm sick. My tummy hurts and I am very tired. My body aches, even my paws.Maybe I ate some bad food. Maybe that's why it was in the trash. Or maybe I touched noses with another dog who was sick. I hope it's not poison.I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. I think I will take a nap...

I have been without Sadie for a long time now. I didn't even want to tell anyone how badly I felt. Today I saw this doggie, sitting on a bridge. He looked well-fed so i asked him about his life.He said his name is Frank. He was sitting on the bridge because he didn't know what else to do. He can't find his family. He said they all got in a car and drove to this place and let him out, and then

Loss of a friend

Today was one of the saddest days of my life. This truck came along and a man in a brown uniform got out and grabbed Sadie! She cried for me and I started to run after the man but then I saw that his partner was going to grab me, too! So I ran!How could I leave Sadie like that? I don't know what is going to happen to her! I don't know what I should have done. Maybe I should have let them catch

That looks like fun

While I was sniffing around for my mom I saw other dogs playing with their owners, like this one with the ball. That looked like so much fun!I went up to this dog and asked if I could play and he said yes! His name is Butch, he said. He dropped the ball and I grabbed it with my teeth and started running. Sadie started running behind us, barking in excitement.I almost forgot all about Mom. But if

Finding mom

I told Sadie I was sure my mom was somewhere nearby. We asked this dog if she'd seen a woman with dark hair and smelling of nice perfume. She said "Sure, every day!" I did not think that was helpful."Come on, let's go!" I said to Sadie, and followed my nose through the grass. We got to a place where they put cars and I sniffed and sniffed. The scent was pretty strong here. But I seemed to be

What's that smell?

This place is a shelter

When Sadie woke up I told her what I'd seen. She said she thinks she knows what this place is. She heard her people talk about it before. They called it a "shelter."

The lady and the hound

I could smell dog food at this place with the fences, so Sadie and decided to camp out there for a few days. We will figure out a way to get that food eventually. We found

Another dog, another fence

After running away from the man in the brown clothes, Sadie and I hid in some bushes for a while. Nobody seemed to be looking for us so we went out and started looking around again. We found another place where there were dogs behind fences. It looked a lot like the other one, where Arf was, but we didn't see any of those trucks. We saw one dog there near the fence and we asked her why she was

Dogs Behind Fences

This afternoon Sadie and I went to the edge of the city. We could see some mountains there, without houses on them. We also saw this truck.I was scared when I saw the truck. I had seen people in brown clothes get out of them and grab dogs and put them in those boxes at the back of the truck. The dogs were like Sadie and me, out on the streets without people. The dogs didn't want to go and they

Children are a goldmine!

Sometimes I get tired of begging. Sadie and I figured out an easier way to get food: kids! Children seem to drop a lot of food. All we have to do is hang out near

The restaurant

Sadie and I went by this restaurant today. We talked to the dog inside. She was very friendly so I think the sign is a joke. But the gate made it so we couldn't go inside ourselves. We wandered around the block, to the other side, and we saw where the restaurant people kept their trash cans. They didn't always put the lids on tightly. My people used to tell me not to knock over the trash can in

Sadie and I are friends. I'm glad to have a friend. We can curl up together when the nights get cold. We can look out for each other if we meet any

Sadie's story

Sadie and I hung out together for a few days. We met these two dogs, who liked each other so much! I hope that I can have some friends like that.I asked Sadie what happened, why she was on the streets. She looked pretty healthy."I had a nice home," she said. "My people kept me in the back yard. I think they were afraid that I would hurt something. My people had children." She paused and looked

Making friends

Well, I do get a bite now and then. I found part of a hamburger in the gutter earlier today and it was still pretty fresh. I would have eaten it even if it weren't. So I was feeling a little better. I wandered the streets more and started to see that there are other dogs out there like me, like this one.I introduced myself."Hi! I'm Duley!"The other dog looked forlorn but she answered, "I'm Sadie.

Food, food, food

I walked by a pet store and saw this huge bag of dog food right near the door. I wanted to rip into it, but when I tried that before a person came out and chased me away and even threw things at me. I didn't want that to happen again but I wanted that food so badly.I walked on, thinking about that bag. I looked right and left, hoping to see a trash can or a discarded hot dog or something like

So hungry

SPCA dog, originally uploaded by basykes.A dog came up to and licked the nice lady who gave me a treat. Then she put a leash on the dog left the dog park.I looked around for another nice person. A man in a blue jacket stood in the corner with his hand in his pockets. The nice lady who had the treats kept the treats in her pocket. Maybe this man in blue has treats in his pocket.I jogged over to

Looking for food

When I left the park it started to rain. I wandered down this street, looking for trash bags and garbage cans, but they had all been taken inside. I kept walking until I saw several dogs on leashes, all heading in the same direction. I followed them. They went into a park. It was a pretty park. There were many different types of dogs in it. I thought maybe one of these dogs would know where I

A meeting in a park

I finally found a way on top of that building and I looked around. But everything looked so far away and it was hard to tell who the people were. I'm better with smell, anyway, and I haven't smelled my people for a long time. I did see a park when I was up there, though. I like parks. So I climbed back down the stairs that the other dog showed me and back to the sidewalk. That dog didn't want to

I've lost my people. Where are they?

The city is a big place. How will I ever find my people here? Maybe I should get higher up off the ground to get a good look around. How did that dog get up there?

Trying To Be Cool

The city is loud. The cars whiz by me when I walk down the street. Some cars honk their horns. It scares me. Other dogs play it cool. They take it all in stride. But not me.

city exploration

Today I wandered into a place where there are lots of buildings. They call it a city. Maybe my family is here. I keep hoping. I saw this dog in a car. He looked like he was waiting for his people, just like me. I wanted to be in that car with him, and it looked like he wanted to be outside where I was! I guess he didn't know what it's like. photo by emmeke, uploaded to flickr Feb 5, 06
