It's interesting that the US seems to have a better system. I like their fixed terms too (though the system we have in SA isn't bad either, with the election required in the 4th year of the government's term).
It could be said that restricting access to publicly funded expert assistance on costing policies is treating us poor voters with contempt. Why shouldn't we have as much information as possible before making our choice, or is the people making an informed decision anathema to some pollies? Fear and loathing is more their style, is it not?

The best part of this 'rigged' system however, is that if the Opposition win, they might get a shot at making it fairer (or more perverse, depending on your allegiances) IF they also control or can muster a Senate majority. The next best thing is that J*W*H has an even fairer chance of not being returned in sunny Benelong; and that when the ballots are counted in the Party Room neither might unloved Peter the Patient. Don't you worry about that, Mr Martin.
