LETTER TO THE EDITOR, sEPTEMBER 11, 2007

Peter Martin is right that public hospitalfunding is an increasingly importantissue. Over the past decade the priority of the Howard Government has been to divert health funds away from public hospitals and into the private health system via funding of 30 per cent of premiums paid to private health insurance companies.

We taxpayers, via this rebate scheme, paid more than $3billion to the highly profitable private health industries. The private health insurance industry had operating profits of nearly $1billion a year. Private hospitals are highly profitable, with the dominant players, Ramsay Health Care and Healthscope/Symbion, increasing profits in the last financial year by 21per cent and 54 per cent respectively.

That is great for shareholders, but I would rather my taxes went directly to funding public hospitals. It is unfortunate the Howard Government wedged Labor into supporting the expensive, inefficient and inequitable private health insurance rebate scheme.
