BevCon nixes Charleston, moves to L.A. for year three

"This was never meant to be a Charleston event — it’s not for Charleston but for the beverage industry,” BevCon founder Angel Postell told Post & Courier Thursday in a story announcing that her beverage industry conference would move to Los Angeles in 2018. After two years hosting the event in Charleston, Postell — the former Charleston Wine + Food festival director — is shifting BevCon to the West Coast.

Has anything notable happened in the past year? Anything?

Well, if you think of anything, you can solidify its place in history by nominating it for Best of Charleston 2018.

Nominations are open at BestofCharleston.net until Tues., Jan. 9, 2018 at noon.

Thousands of you will log-in over the next four weeks to pitch your favorite local businesses, people, and events as we compile the definitive Best of Charleston list for 2018.

This year, BOC18 voters will be able to weigh in on a few new categories too along with some others that we're tweaking to help round-out the list.

Here are the changes:

Best Traditional Pizza - This replaces "Best NY Style Pizza," but "Best Gourmet Pizza" remains.
Best Place to Hear Local Hip-Hop - This replaces "Best Hip-Hop Club"

Jon Darling, a McClellanville sheep farmer and veteran who served as an Army Ranger, will be featured on Lidia Bastianich's "Lidia Celebrates America: Homegrown Heroes" episode this weekend.

Darling, who CP profiled in 2016, runs Darling Farm, a 20-acre sheep and goat farm on Honey Hill, a spot in McLellanville surrounded by the Francis Marion National Forest. After joining the military shortly after 9/11, Darling served six tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, and South Africa during his four-year enlistment. more…

New SmartCards now available for peninsula's parking meters

If you still have a SmartCard lying around the house or hiding in your wallet, you might just have more reasons to get rid of it.

The peninsula's updated meters — which now take credit cards, coins, and SmartCards — don't accept the same SmartCards the old meters did. New cards can be bought for $15 at the Revenue Collections office in Lockwood Drive or at the Visitors Center on Meeting Street, according to a Monday press release from the city. more…
