2004-08-14T14:38:10.980-07:00Don't look now but the Tigers are starting to play some decent ball. After winning a series against the very good Oakland A's, the Tigers beat the Angels last night 5-3 by scoring 2 runs in the 9th inning. The Tigers' record now sits at 54-61. Detroit won't make the playoffs but if they play good the rest of the way then they will have a chance at ending the season at or close to 500.
2004-07-30T12:07:55.860-07:00There have been some trade rumors floating around about trading Urbina or Mike Maroth. Stay posted......
2004-07-05T19:34:16.156-07:00The Tigers are about half way through their season. Their record is 37-43. Here are my midseason grades for each player and the team as a whole. Ivan Rodriguez A+ Pudge was brought to Detroit to lead the team. I think he has done a great job at that. He is leading the entire league in batting average at 377. He also has 10 homers,57 RBIs, and was named to A.L. starting lineup for the all-star game. Carlos Guillen A+ Guillen is having an incredible year. He is batting .324 with 11 homers and 57 RBIs. Along with Pudge, he was named to the all-star game. Brandon Inge B+ When the Tigers signed Pudge, it looked like Inge wouldn't play much all season. He has played and he has looked great. He is batting 303. He also has 7 homers, 2 grand slams, and 30 RBIs. He has been the biggest surprise for the Tigers this season. Rondell White B White is having a very solid season. He is batting 270 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs. He is right on pace for the 22 homers he hit last year. Omar Infante B Along with Inge, Infante has been another nice surprise. He is batting 293, has 10 doubles, 5 triples, 6 homers, and 26 RBIs. Alex Sanchez B- Sanchez has had a good season. He is batting 326. He also has a team leading 18 stolen bases. Alex is hitting good but he isn't getting walked enough to be the leadoff hitter. He only has 6 walks, something he must improve on. Dmitri Young B- Young got injured very early in the season and now he is back. He is hitting 311 with 5 homers and 18 RBIs. He is just starting to get back into the groove. Carlos Pena B- Pena is having a good year. He has 11 homers and 46 RBIs. Along with Munson though, his terrible batting average. His batting average is only 234. He too must improve in that area. Bobby Higginson B- Bobby is having a much better year than people thought he would. He is hitting 276. He also has 35 RBIs and a team leading 37 walks. Eric Munson C+ Munson started the season slow but is starting to come around. He has hit 11 homers and has 30 RBIs. The one thing he must improve on his terrible 237 batting average. Craiq Monroe C Monroe is not having the type of season people thought he would after having a great rookie season. He is hitting 272 but he only has 2 homeruns. Fernado Vina D Vina and Guillen were supposed to be the 1-2 punch up the middle. Guillen is doing is part, but Vina isn't. He has been injured and he is only batting 226. He also has 0 homers and only 7 RBIs. When he gets back from injury, he needs to do much better. Greg Norton D- Norton wasn't supposed to be a star this season by any stretch but he has done terrible. He is batting a team low 174. He also has only 2 RBIs and 15 hits in the 41 games he has played. Note-I only graded players who have played in 20 games or more. Now for the Pitching Staff Nate Robertson A Robertson has been the star of the Tigers' pitching staff. He is 7-3 with a 3.82 ERA. He also has 87 strikeouts in 96.2 innings of work. Gary Knotts B Knotts started the season very strong when Detroit called him to pitch. He has struggled a bit lately but he is still having a good season. He is 4-3 and has 49 strikeouts. Jamie Walker B- In the few games that Walker has pitched, he has looked great. He has a very low 2.97 ERA and has 30 strikeouts in just 33.1 innings of work. Jason Johnson C+ Johnson started the season at 1-5 but has now won 4/7 to up his record to 5-7. He has a 4.88 ERA along with 61 strikeouts. Mike Maroth C Mike also started the season very good but it looks like he has dropped off the table. He is now 5-6 and has a 4.82 ERA. He is still having a much better year than last year when he lost 21 games. Danny Patterson C Patterson is 0-4 but he does have a nice 3.98 ERA. He also has 20 strikeouts in 31.2 innings of work. Urbina C Urbina is having a decent season as the Tigers' closer. He is 11/13 in his save opportunities and he also as 38 strikeouts in 31 innings of work. The one thing he must improve on is his terrible 5[...]
2004-06-20T20:37:47.146-07:00The Tigers were swept today by the Mets. They lost game 1 and 2 of this series in extra innings. Both games were won by Mike Cameron of the Mets. He hit the game winning homer in game 1 and in game 2 he hit the game winning RBI single. They lost today 6-1.
2004-06-11T09:03:34.236-07:00With the second pick overall in the MLB draft, the Tigers selected Justin Verlander. He is a pitcher who is 6-4 180lbs and can throw the heat. He is supposed to have a lot of good stuff. Hopefully this guy isn't a washout just like the rest of the pitchers they have selected in past years.
2004-06-04T19:22:16.673-07:00The blog View from the Bleachers is having a World Series of Blogs, my blog isn't in it but go over and vote for Tiger Blog. I don't run that site but I do write for it.
2004-06-02T18:55:58.210-07:00Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez is leading all American League catchers in votes for the allstar game. He is having a very good season with 40 RBIs. He is also hitting around 330.
2004-05-29T07:31:11.193-07:00This site is going to have a lot less postings over the summer about the Tigers. The reason is because I am going to be writing most of the game reports for Tigerblog.net. Check there from now on if you want game recaps. I will still write on this site a little but only if there is important news.
2004-05-27T17:19:33.103-07:00The Tigers smoked the Royals today 17-7. They collected 27 hits, tying their franchise record. Their 27 hits was also a high for the Majors this season.
2004-05-26T09:19:40.773-07:00The UMP might have cost the Tigers the game last night in the top of the 9th inning. With one out the Tigers had runners at first and third base. Pudge came up to bat and hit a grounder to the shortstop. He flipped the ball over to the second baseman to get the second out of the inning. The second baseman then threw the ball to first base. Pudge was called safe and the game tying run had already touched home. But the UMPS said that Carlos Guillen, who was on first base, had interfered with the throw because he didn't slide. They called both runners out and the Royals won the game. It was a close call that probably should't have been made with the game on the line. I guess that's just the Tigers' dumb luck.
2004-05-24T10:03:26.436-07:00The Tigers are once again one game under 500 after losing to the Mariners yesterday 3-1. Bonderman(4-3) got the start for the Tigers and pitched good going 7 innings and giving up only 3 runs. He couln't get the run support and he had to take his third loss of the season. The entire Tigers team only had 5 hits and scored only 1 run. This was a tough loss to take but the Tigers still took 2/3 games from the Mariners to win yet another series. They are now 21-22 on the season. The Tigers finish their road trip in Kansas City starting Tuesday at 8:10pm ET.
2004-05-23T10:49:32.516-07:00The Tigers are once again 500 after beating the Mariners late last night 8-4. Jason Johnson(3-5) got the start for Detroit and went 8 1/3 innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Detroit broke open the game in the 8th inning when Craiq Monroe hit a double that cleared the bases to make it 5-2 Tigers. The Tigers scored a few more runs to put the game out of reach. They are now 21-21 on the season.
2004-05-22T07:14:34.520-07:00The Tigers pulled off an impressive win yesterday against the struggling Mariners. They shut them out 5-0. Nate(3-3) pitched great going 7 innings, allowing 0 runs, and striking out 3. The Tigers got homeruns from Carlos Pena and Eric Munson. In the ninth inning the Mariners loaded the bases but Urbina shut them down. This was a nice victory for Detroit after losing a couple games in a row. They are now 20-21 on the season.
2004-05-20T08:10:36.733-07:00The Tigers were outplayed last night by the A's losing to them 6-2. Maroth(4-2) got the start and had a bad night going 5.1 innings and allowed 4 runs. Oakland got the runs they needed on homers from Kielty(he homered twice) and another homer from Jermaine Dye. Mark Redman(3-2) got the start for Oakland and pitched good going 5 innings and allowing only 2 runs. The Tigers are now 19-20 on the season.
2004-05-19T11:18:57.560-07:00The Tigers got back to 500 last night with a nice victory over the A's beating them 5-1. Bonderman(4-2) got the start and pitched great going 7 innings, giving up only 1 run, and allowing only 4 hits. This was the second time in less than a week that Bonderman 4 hit the A's. The Tigers got the runs they needed on homers from Monroe and Rondell White. The only run Bonderman gave up was on an Erubiel Durazo home run. Detroit has been looking great lately. They have been pitching much better and are hitting like they were earlier in the season. Their record now sits at 19-19 on the season.
2004-05-17T19:52:39.356-07:00The Tigers didn't play today so I want to talk about their improving pitching staff. In the last 7 games the Tigers have allowed only 19 runs. In that span they won 4 games and lost 3. They were scoring a lot of runs earlier in the season but they weren't pitching good. Now that it looks like they are starting to pitch better, their hitting needs to pick it up a bit if they want to get over 500 and stay there. The Tigers start a road series tomorrow with the Oakland A's. Bonderman(3-2) goes up against Rich Harden(2-2) in tomorrow's game at 10:05 p.m. eastern time.
2004-05-16T14:30:52.590-07:00The Tigers won today against the Rangers 3-1 on another great day of pitching. Jason Johnson(2-5) looked good going 5 strong innings and getting the victory. This was his first victory since opening day. Three relievers came in after Johnson and threw 4 shutout innings combined. Infante hit a homer and Alex Sanchez had 3 hits and 1 rbi. This was another nice victory for the Tigers who are one game away from being 500 again.
2004-05-15T18:42:28.880-07:00The Tigers lost today against the Rangers 6-1 and are now 2 games under 500. Nate Robertson(2-3) got the start for Detroit and pitched good going 5.2 innings, giving up 3 runs, and striking out 10 Rangers. He now has 50 strikouts on the season, tied for second in the A.L. Robertson pitched good but Kenny Rogers(5-2) of the Rangers pitched even better. He threw 6.1 solid innings and gave up only 1 run. Hank Blalock, Alfonso Soriano and Michael Young all homered for the Rangers to put away the Tigers. The lone Tigers' run came off a Rondell White single. Detroit is now 17-19 on the season.
2004-05-15T09:00:40.180-07:00The Tigers are now one game away from being 500 after beating the Rangers yesterday 7-1. For the 4th straight game their pitching looked great. Knotts(1-0) started his first game of the season and looked sharp going 5 innings, and giving up only 2 hits and one run. Yan came in relief of Knotts and threw 4 perfect innings to pick up the save. Pudge continued his hot streak, hitting another 2 run homer and scoring twice. The Tigers are finally starting to get the games together. They are starting to hit and pitch good in the same game. Nate Robertson(2-2) gets the start today against Rogers(4-2).
2004-05-13T19:31:49.056-07:00This 3 game mini series with Oakland was good in some ways and bad in some ways. It was bad because they lost 2/3 games and the 2 games they lost were by one run each. They lost 5-4 in the first game(in 15 innings) and in the second game they lost 2-1. They finally got a victory today beating Oakland 3-1. The good part about this series is that their pitching finally showed signs that they may be coming around. The entire staff allowed only 7 runs in 33 innings against Oakland. Their bullpen allowed only 1 run in 13 innings of work. They now need to pitch and hit and they should get back to playing 500 ball.
2004-05-13T15:24:17.553-07:00The Tigers finally beat Oakland today 3-1 after losing the first 2 games of the series 5-4 and 2-1. Maroth(4-1) got the start and pitched a gem going 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, and allowing only one run. The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Pudge hit a 2 run homer, his 6th of the season. They took 3-0 lead in the third inning when Rondell White hit a triple to drive is Carlos Guillen. Oakland got one run in the 5th inning to make it 3-1 Detroit. Maroth didn't give up any more runs after that and Urbina pitched a perfect 9th inning to pick up the save. This was a big win for Detroit after losing 3/4 games.
2004-05-12T20:32:08.706-07:00The Tigers lost another very tough game tonight against the A's. Oakland snuck past Detroit beating them 2-1. Tonight was a battle of pitching. Jeremy Bonderman(3-2) got the start for Detroit and pitched great going 7 innings, and giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits. Rich Harden(2-2) got the start for Oakland and pitched great as well going 7 inning, striking out 8, and giving up only one run. The Tigers' lone run come off a RBI single by Pudge in the 5th inning. Detroit had a golden opportunity in the third inning when they had runners on the corners with only 1 out, but Harden closed the door stiking out Pudge and getting Rondell White to fly out. Just when the Tigers are finally starting to pitch good their hitting lets them down for the second straight game. If they can continue to pitch good and start hitting the ball again they will get back on the right track. Maroth(3-1)gets the start tomorrow against former Tiger Mark Redman(2-1).
