Knuckler gets 7th win on 38th B-Day

2004-08-03T08:08:43.253-04:00

Tim Wakefield won his 7th game of the season as the Sox ended a 3 game losing streak. Mark Hendrickson lasted only 4 1/3 innings giving up 6 runs, 5 earned. David Mccarty hit a 3 run home run for the Sox in the 2nd inning. Kevin Youkilis added a 2 run double in the 5th. Wakefield(7-6) gave up a 2 run homer to former Yankee Tino Martinez in the first. But Wake cooled down in the Tampa heat not allowing a run until Rocco Baldelli grounded out to, scoring rookie B.J. Upton, who got his first MLB hit. Keith Foulke went 1 1/3 to pick up his 17th save of the year. Boston improved to 57-47 and the Rays fell to 50-55. The Red Sox are currently 9 games behind the New York Yankees.

Bellhorn Breaks Hand

2004-08-03T08:02:01.850-04:00

Wow, can our offense take another hit? Boston.com and Dirt Dogs are reporting that Bellhorn broke his hand after getting hit by Joe Nathan yesterday. Bellhorn to 15-day dl, Dave Roberts activated.

Trade Deadline: Winners and Loser

2004-08-02T09:25:57.570-04:00

Winners:

White Sox:
Getting Jose Contreras was a great move for the Sox, Contreras is 17-2 against teams not named Red Sox. Losing Loaiza could be a bad move but he has been terrible all year.

Yankees: The Yankees needed a big game pitcher and Jose Contreras proved he wasn't. They Yankees will probably try to fix Loaiza's cutter and he could be a great addition down the stretch.

Cubs: The Cubs gave up a below average SS and 3 minor league players for All-Star SS Nomar Garciaparra. Garciaparra probably won't re-sign in Chicago, and he may be injured, but it is still a good risk for the Cubs.

Red Sox: The Red Sox managed to move Nomar Garciaparra, a free agent to be, reportedly injured, and thought to be a clubhouse killer. Cabrera won't match Garciaparra's offense, but is much better in the field. Minky will be a great player at 1b for the Sox, a position filled by Kevin Millar and David Ortiz. Dave Roberts adds another speedy player to the Sox bench, a position they have missed.

Marlins: The Marlins managed to fill all their needed positions. Paul Lo Duca is a huge upgrade over Mike Redmond. Encarnacion will force Conine to 1b. The loss of Choi will probably be meaningless as the Marlins have AA 1b Jason Stokes. Penny could be the a huge loss if Josh Beckett does not get healthy. Mota will be a huge addition to a weak pen.

Losers:

Mets:
T
he Mets are below .500 and over 5 games out of the Divison with the Marlins, Phillies and Braves ahead of them. Kris Benson might re-sign but is not a pitcher worth 3years/27million. Zambrano is even worse, he leads the majors in walks. To get these two pitchers, the Mets gave up their top pitching prospect in Kazmir and their top catching prospect in Huber(who Kansas City stole).

Dodgers:
The traded 3 major league players for 1 pitcher, a 1b who strikes out to much, and a CF who will leave at the end of the year. Finley is better that Encarnacion but losing Lo Duca was a huge blow, they now have David Ross to do the catching. Mota was the biggest reason the Dodgers are in 1st place, he got them to Eric Gagne. Penny could be a good starting pitching with Hideo Nomo throwing meatballs, but the Dodgers are a team that struggles to score runs, and they give up 2 above average hitter for 1 above average hitter.

Defense? Sox Lose 4-3

2004-08-01T16:51:46.066-04:00

The Twins managed to take 2/3 from the Sox on a day the Sox really felt the lose of Nomar Garciaparra. Newcomer Orlando Cabrera homered in his first at bat, but the Sox would manage only 2 hits against Johan Santana and Joe Nathan. Yet again the Twins beat the Sox in the 8th. Justin Morneau hit a long fly ball to deep left center, Gabe Kapler made the catch and fired it towards the infield, Tori Hunter scored on the Sac Fly, meanwhile as the ball traveled to the infield, Lew Ford headed to 3rd. As Cabrera was about to cut off the ball, it kicked of his foot and rolled past 1st base allowing Ford to score.
In the 9th Mark Bellhorn was hit by a pitch, Cabrera struk out swinging and Manny Ramirez, who earlier hit his league leading 28th home run, hit into a double play.

Cabby homers for Sox

2004-08-02T13:10:48.566-04:00

The newest Red Sox SS hit a homer in his 1st at bat with the Sox. The Sox are currently up 2-1.

Nomar made his debut with the Cubs, batting 2nd and wearing number 8. Garciaparra is currently 0-2 and hit into a double play. There is also rumour that Nomar's would be injured if he stayed with the Sox, but he somehow got better when he learned of his trade to Chicago. Meanwhile Greg Maddux goes for his 300th win, Maddux would be 22nd pitcher to reach the milestone and doing so would make him the youngest ever. Roger Clemens reached his 300th win last season. The Phillies lead 3-1.
