Jackson Sze Art

Sorry about the lack of updates.
You can find more of my artwork at my Facebook art page:

Thank you!

Err.... Been a while...

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been really busy with work this past year.
Here are some paintings I managed to do in 2011... not nearly enough.

The middle Laguna Beach ones were done in Mike Hernandez's fantastic Workshop.

CDA Landscape Class Demos

Happy New Year!

Here are some of the demos and in-class paintings I did for the Landscape Class in Fall'10.

The last assignment for the class involves a Concept Environment piece. This was the demo to show the class how to integrate what we learn outdoors to our concept work.

Hope you can join me in Spring! CDA schedule is out!

Dragon Flame Steps

Ah, as requested and promised, here are some steps from the Dragon image.1. Actually had the image in my mind first, so I simply put down what's in my head. I blocked in the shapes with very basic flat colors... Sky is Blue! Fire, Red! Grass, Green! All those Art Classes really paid off!2. Filled in the rest of the image and started to add more lighting info. Also noticed a rhythm going on, and decided to reinforce that idea (indicated by red lines). The Verticals (people on horses) could contrast the Curves of the Dragon and Flames, reinforcing the story's Conflict.3. From here on out it just became a matter of defining the forms and making sure the shapes actually read as the things I want to convey. Fixing silhouettes, proportions, gestures, etc. Decided on a Brown-ish Dragon because everyone knows Blue Dragons don't exist.4. Looked at horses, indicating planes, rendering out different materials such as cloth, metal, skin, etc. Dropped in a photo of some random hills in the back. Got to keep in mind the scale of things. Making sure there is enough texture detail to describe how big something is.5. A few Power Naps later, the image is done! Added Crispy Fried People in the flames for kicks and giggles. Pretended to shoot arrows from my desk to see how the archer should be drawn. Nothing much to speak of in terms of actual Creature Design, but I got to paint a Dragon so I'm a happy manchild.I don't approach every image I do the same way. Sometimes I can see the image in my mind, and I simply draw it. Other times I have to search and search. Other times its more structured. I'm sure you do the same things.Honestly for the Fantasy images 1 post down, they each started differently.  I'd be bored if I have to do paintings the same way each time.Shameless Promotional Plug:A more structured look and tutorial on my painting process can be found in BATTLEMiLK 2. Available everywhere DSP books are sold! Hahahahaha. You can check out my friends' art and tutorials too! Probably learn more from them. Can't cover everything here on the blog, but I teach a Landscape Painting Class at CDA in Pasadena. Its Landscape Painting for Entertainment, so we do Entertainment work in the class as well. Come join me in Spring!Jackson, out![...]

Fantasy Dump

Been reading "Game of Thrones" and my mind is filled with Dragons and Knights and Witches...

NEEERRRD! Oh wait... that's me.. I... yea...

Nothing specific to the books, but just really inspired by what I'm reading.

HBO series next year!
(Please forgive the re-posted image, part of a series!)

The Burden...

I read online that the first draft of Batman 3 is done?

Batman is too fun to paint...

Landscape Painting Class Fall 2010

Hey Folks,Its Fall and its time for landscape painting again. I'll be teaching the class at CDA on Sundays. The Class is going to be slightly modified from the last time I taught it. There's going to be an emphasis on creating convincing colors out of your head off-site as well. This should help students apply color theory to their entertainment work. Hope you can join me!*Added some new pieces done over the weekend...  [...]

BM2 Signing and LIVE painting at Nucleus

Hello out there!

Thank you everyone for their support of BM2.

The entire BM2 gang is going to be at Nucleus Saturday Aug 28th from 4 to 8pm.
We'll be signing books, showing work and I'll embarrass myself with some Live Painting.

There will be drinks and music, hope to see you there!

BATTLEMiLK2 @ Comicon 2010

Hello Everyone!
Just wanted to let you know that BATTLEMiLK2 will be at Comicon next week. Check out the BATTLEMiLK website for sneak peeks and updates.

Please come visit us at the Design Studio Press Booth #1701.

All 6 artists will be there to sign copies on Friday 7/23 from 4 to 5pm.

If you can't make it to the Con, BM2 will be available everywhere DSP books are sold. You can get it at Amazon, Borders, etc.

Also, for those in the Los Angeles area, we'll be hosting an event at Gallery Nucleus Aug 28th. A very limited quantity of BM1 books are still available at Nucleus. More info about that event coming soon.

Thanks for all your support, see you at the Con!

BATTLEMiLK 2 is almost here!

This is the reason for the general lack of Blog updates earlier this year. My friends and I have been busy working on this book for... what is it now... 2 years?

This time around, we've added Le Tang and David Le Merrer to the original 4 BATTLEMiLK artists.

Copies should be available at the Design Studio Press Booth come Comicon this July, and everywhere else where DSP books are sold.

I'll post some images from my section soon...Thanks for checking it out!

CS5 & Red Dead

If anyone were to ask you how awesome Red Dead Redemption is, the only appropriate response is: "It is perhaps too awesome, ma'am."

Also, finally onto CS5... Trying the new mixer brushes. What will Painter do now?!

I hardly post anything Sci-Fi here... due to my day job being The Clone Wars for the last 2 years. Now that I'm out and about, its time to do some personal sci-fi work.

A lot of influences here... Star Trek, Mass Effect 2, Moon... even Star Tours!
Space, the final frontier! And all that good stuff...

Erik Tiemens Workshop

Erik came down to LA last weekend for a workshop at CDA.
Had a great time painting in the hazy So-Cal sun.

That's Rodney painting in oils.

Landscape Class Demos

These are some of the on location Demos I did this term.
Mostly I take around an hour in the beginning of class to show the students my process and or do a lecture...

Black & White, Limited Palette and towards the end, Full Color Palette.

Oh, and for those of you who may be enrolling in classes at Gnomon next term, just want to let you know that I will NOT be teaching the Environment Class . I know the schedule has my name on it... but that was a misprint... Sorry!

Also, no Landscape Class from me in the summer... too hot... will return in the Fall.

BATTLEMiLK2 is almost done! More info soon-ish...

Happy New Year Everybody!Being a freelance artist has afforded me a lot more time to go landscape painting... and I really enjoy being outside as opposed to warming my hands on my Cintiq this winter...I'm teaching a Landscape Painting Class at CDA in Spring, so I've been scouting locations and preparing my lesson plan. The class will be held in the tradition of the amazing Landscape Classes I took with Mike Hernandez and Robh Ruppel. Thanks to them and other amazing teachers, I have cultivated a lifetime pursuit.I hope to do these teachers justice with my class...[...]

Back in LA

Back in Sunny Southern California... Had an awesome time painting with Bill on Saturday. I knew I came back for a reason!

Gonna be leaving the Bay Area soon... Wonder when I will be back?
It's been really fun.

Mendocino Workshop

Was lucky enough to attend Erik's Workshop over the weekend. The weather was stormy... so we did more in-studio work. Worth the drive for sure!

Finally got my website going. You might even see some stuff not already on the blog!

Thanks to Stephen for all his help.

For the bottom image... I mixed in elements from Zelda, Shadow of Colossus, Mouse Guard and a bunch of other stuff... haha. If only I added some Totoros in there too...Hope it mixed well.

Hey people,I usually don't do non-art related posts... but here's my meager contribution to helping out an old colleague and his fiancee.DOLLAR CAMPAIGN One minute, one dollar, pass it on.www.hibm.orgYou can make a REAL difference with very LITTLE money and very LITTLE time. We're asking for two things: give $1 and pass this email to people you know. We're trying to raise $1,000,000 in 3 months to enable human therapeutic trials to fight HIBM, a debilitating disease. We're asking for two things:First, go to WEBSITE ( to donate $1. Second, send this email on to all your friends and family. In the Internet age, reaching one million people in that amount of time is surely do-able. If you are interested in becoming a bigger influence in this campaign, host your own dollar collecting campaign in your community, church, workplace, among your friends and family and donate what you've collected as one donation.HIBM (Hereditary Inclusion Body Myopathy) is a progressive and debilitating muscle-wasting disorder caused by a gene defect. It touches those between the ages of 20 and 40 and, although progression is slow, it typically leads to total disability within 10-15 years. Studies suggest that HIBM may be easier to cure than many other disorders or diseases, the only limiting factor is funds. Many thanks for the read... new art coming soon!- Jackson[...]

Daily Exercises

Been trying to sharpen the rusty old blade lately...

When in doubt, paint Totoros.

A horribly inaccurate sketch of Osaka Castle... I took out the modern looking elevator sitting in front of it.

A random house in Kyoto...

Quicksketch on the corner of the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo...
Really fresh Sushi!

Lunch Sketch

Hiked up the hills during lunch with Randy and Sergio for a quick paint.
The recent rains have made the ground really soggy... though the dramatic rain clouds are awesome to paint.

More Practice

I've been attending some awesome workshops at Concept Design Academy last year... really should try to apply more of what I've learned.

Oh, and just in case you forgot how amazing these guys are... Kevin, Khang, Erik...

Late Night Study

All the while looking at Mr. Mullins' stuff of course...
