While discussing the offense he only mentions positions players? I hope he discussed his satisfaction with the line, but it just wasn't mentioned in BHB.

My biggest concern on Michigan teams for several years now (as I suspect with most) is the offensive line. His lack of citing even one player is very disconcerting.

He hasn't been cleared medically yet. There is an expectation he will be ready for Fall Camp, but its hard to know if he will be in playing shape or if his condition will let him be cleared at all.

Sparty has followed in the Suckeye mantra; nothing is wrong as long as we are winning. Best way to beat a rape rap at either institution is to run a 4.4 in the 40. These placed gave up on character and integrity a long time ago and have been awarded with wins in their sports programs.

Any update on Grant Newsome? My personal feeling is we will not see him on the field again. It's sad if that happens to come true. He is a great kid!!

Coach B is not a young man and probably has one more contract in him. Doing something that pays him what he has earned and that gives him some type of pension when he is ready to hang him up, is where I was going with the lifetime contract.

Lifeitme contract ... hmmm ... well.

Personally I prefer more the way Walter Alston did it with the Dodgers years ago: one year contracts (btw 23 of them). That way at the end of each season if either side wants out they just cut bait.

I am not a fan of give a guy a long term contract and then three years later he's dumped but gets these annual sums for the remainder of the contract.

Wow! Michigan didn't play well. Some would say that Villanova had something to do with that. In any case, Michigan has a bright future.

FWIW, this is absolutely my last posting. My rants end here. I've enjoyed it. Be well. IMHO!!!

2018-04-02T16:48:20.733-04:00

Interestingly enough, I know Villanova basketball pretty well and maybe even more than I wanted to know but I live in the area so I've watched them all season long, year after year. Philly has just won the Super bowl so the "expert" talking heads here are believing that that energy will translate to the other area sports teams.

Villanova is a good team and they have an outstanding coach much like John Beilein, and like John Beilein, Villanova takes care of the goose that lays the golden eggs. He's been approached by other programs but he's not planning on going anywhere.

Villanova is the best team (head and shoulders) in the Big East Conference and far better than Xavier with all of its notoriety. However, in spite of what other "experts" may think, Michigan will be the BEST team that Villanova has played this season and that includes a good Kansas team.

When Villanova plays a good/solid team, they normally do not put together two dominating halves. Villanova had games where they would have a very strong half (first or second) and maintain for the other half. Their strongest rivals would usually make adjustments and make a run but because these teams aren't as balanced with the shooters that Villanova has (or even Michigan) they've fallen short.

Plus, Villanova in spite of their record (like many teams) struggle just a little away from their home court. Three of their four losses came on the visitor's court and one at home when they've played solid teams. Even their four closest wins have been either on their opponent's court or on a neutral court, and again against solid but not great teams.

My point here is that Villanova is no doubt an outstanding team and deserves to be in the championship game...and they are deserving of the hype, however, they've dominated lesser teams by shooting the lights out and their opponets couldn't play strong enough defense. Butler's win came when both teams shot the lights out and Butler was on their home court with a hyped up crowd. However, Butler couldn't take their game on the road for their second match up.

Villanova has rarely been in a dog fight this season but the eight closest games played by Villanova's strongest opponents (except Kansas) when Villanova was either on the road or on a neutral court the opponents have been able to play with them winning 50% of the time or lose by keeping it a one or two possession game at the end. In other words, Villanova is vulnerable when playing against strong opponents in a close game when they play away from home.

I am not predicting anything this evening, all I know is that Michigan will be the strongest team Villanova has faced with a strong all around game. Plus, Michigan has had to play (IMO) a stronger bracket of teams than Villanova to get here (Iron sharpening iron). Moreover, they are on a neutral court and because of Michigan's stronger national alumni base, there could be much more Michigan fans there than Villanova fans (which could give Michigan a home like court advantage). Therefore, if the officiating is not an issue, then Michigan has more than a 50% chance of winning this game.

Nevertheless, here's hoping for a Michigan win tonight. Go Blue!!! IMHO!!!

FWIW, I agree Tim on the kids needing to (go) and stay in school. If they don't make, land or stick with the pros then at least they will have an education. I used to think that, that is what school was all about. However, now we're more like the minor leagues for many pro sports.

Do you remember when Pep Hamilton in his interview with Sam Webb spoke about Joe Milton being really into his preparation for football and seemingly going over board? He stated that Milton was this way because he didn't have anything to go back to. Football was all he had as a hope for his future. To me that is a sad commentary on what this is all about. Yes, he would potentially make millions of dollars but the down side is he is likely to end up with a concussion syndrome and have a poor quality of health that the public don't really see.

Regarding Grant Newsome, he's made it clear that he will listen to the medical advice of his doctors, however, he wants to eventually play in the NFL. That dream gets kids (and their families) to thinking that this is their ticket out of either poverty or mediocrity. I wish them all well. IMHO!!!

Thanks Tim, you have the same information I do on Grant. I think he is healing and jogging but still not ready for contact. I expect he will be out the entire Spring with the hopes for getting ready for Fall Camp. If he is not ready then, I expect he will take a medical redshirt and be done with football. I really hope we get some good news about him this summer.

Thanks Bob.

Easy for me to say this from left field cheap seats, but many of these kids need to stay in school. So many kids leave school early only to be out of the league in 2 years or less.

Football question: I assume no news on Grant Newsome? I believe last I heard he is not cleared to play. Any idea how good he is doing? Can he run? Any gut feel on if he will ever play football again?

I think how Michigan does against Notre Dame in the fall will go a long way as to show how the season "could" develop; particularly the QB's and the OT positions. In other words, they could lose that game but play well and we should still be encouraged. If they win and not play well it could be a long season. If they lose and stink up the joint,...well, I'm afraid to think about it.

Nevertheless, I am expecting to see a team that is vastly improved over last year because of better coaching, another year of experience at each position, more quality overall depth and better physical conditioning. IMHO!!!

Regarding Calvin Anderson, I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand it would have been nice to have an experienced tackle come in and compete (and win) the starting position. That is assuming that he was able to win the position which was no guarantee. Fifth year transfers in any sport don't always pan out.

Moreover, on the other end of the spectrum, had Anderson started and locked up the position, my concern would have been his one year could have delayed the development of a player that could have used that year to mature and solidified the OL. In any case you can't blame a kid for going where his heart leads him and that case it's home. IMHO!!!

2018-03-08T19:45:32.093-05:00

I agree in principle that he should have gone to see Calvin Anderson by now, however, according to the Michigan Athletic website, "Ed Warinner was hired as Michigan's offensive line coach on March 8, 2018," which means that he wasn't actually the coach until today. We don't know what the hold up was but it was likely part negotiation of sticky contract details along with having his contract officially approved by various stages along to bureaucracy, and so forth. Plus, they wouldn't have know before last night (7th) that he was going to announce his decision this Saturday.

The general rule of thumb which may have applied here, is that you don't have someone (whom you are trying to hire) doing the work "before" they are officially hired. It is usually in part for liability reasons. It is likely that he (Warinner) has called Calvin today after his official promotion and explained what was the hold up was.

If national academics play a part in this decision then you have Michigan #5 and Texas/Austin #14. When it comes to comparing the number of 2017 prospects that were drafted into the NFL between the two schools Michigan #11 and Texas #0 (?), I can't identify any from Texas. The point being that based upon those measurable tools that make the most sense, the pick for Calvin Anderson "should" be Michigan. However, youth determines their own logic so we will see. IMHO!!!
