Actually, this book reprints a big chunk of an earlier reprint volume, JANE AT WAR (1976), with strips originally published between 3 September 1939 and V-J Day 1945 (it's a HUGE book, y'all!).

As far as the pre-war strips go, It's interesting to see how the series evolved from its original form, a rather dull peek into Jane's diary (hence the original title, JANE'S JOURNAL OR, THE DIARY OF A BRIGHT YOUNG THING), to its somewhat racier incarnation in the l

I learned about Jane thanks to a U.S. airing of the BBC television version starring Glynis Barber and produced in an arch attempt to simulate a "comic strip" format. The only sample of it online not yet removed for terms of use violation is this snippet, taped off the tv screen with a video camera -- making the clip one further step removed from its original form:

my God, Steve, that was one of the best things about the "Penguin Book of Comics." Wish I still had my copy.
