5 Ways I Use Jamaican Black Castor Oil In My Regimen

I get a lot of questions as to how I use Jamaican Black Castor Oil in my hair regimen! It's a known fact that many either LOVE or  h a t e  this oil because it's so thick and has a burnt ashy scent - I'm a huge fan by the way :)! These unique qualities, among others,  really make this oil stand out from the rest. I personally love this oil because it serves multiple purposes that I consider useful and have made an impact on my hair throughout my hair journey.Just a quick recap - JBCO has been in my regimen since 2009/2010. My stylist introduced it to me and I read rave reviews on several hair forums back then. I tested this oil out for myself and noticed a significant growth increase just by applying it to my scalp weekly. I then created a series of Castor Oil Challenges with hundreds of participants in order to achieve increased growth and thickness together! It was a huge success.Since then, I continued to incorporate JBCO into my hair regimen in several different ways that have truly been beneficial in promoting growth while improving the health of my hair. Below is a quick rundown of the 5 Ways I Use Jamaican Black Castor Oil in My Hair Regimen:1. Scalp Hair Growth Oil - I apply this oil to my scalp at least 1-2 per week to promote healthy hair growth. I notice thicker new growth and more length on relaxer day (or when I flat iron) by consistently using JBCO on a clean scalp. Too, it works so well for my edges!2. Deep Conditioner Addition - If I notice my hair is very dry and brittle I'll add 1-2 tsps (along with my 3 penetrating oils - avocado, coconut and olive oil) to my deep conditioner. JBCO really helps to soften my hair and draw moisture into my strands (acts as a humectant). It works like a charm!3. Sealant - I don't do this often, but it works!  There's nothing like a little JBCO to lock in moisture on your ends when doing a braid out, twist out or bun. I've done this several times and I always notice increased shine, softness and hydration in my strands. Of course, a little goes a long way!4. Soften New Growth - JBCO works wonders on my new growth which really helps when stretching my relaxers. It softens my type 4b/c new growth and gives it a nice shine. I section off my hair and apply a thin layer to my scalp and new growth. Oh, I just love it!5. Relaxer Touch-up Protection - For years I've used JBCO as a scalp base prior to my relaxer touch-ups to prevent burning and/or irritation. This thick oil creates a protective barrier between your hair and skin from the relaxer. It's perfect!! I would also run some JBCO down the length of my previously relaxed hair (starting right after the new growth) to prevent relaxer run-off and overlapping!JBCO is "liquid gold" ♡How do you use Jamaican Black Castor Oil in your Hair Regimen?[...]

Retaining Length | The Ultimate Guide To Retain Length For Relaxed Hair

Weeks ago I asked my followers on Instagram (@hairlicious) what Blog topics they would be interested in knowing more about and the first question was: "What are your top tips for retaining length on relaxed hair?" See below.Great question! Now tell me, what's a hair journey without retaining length? It wouldn't be much of a hair journey if there's no movement in the length of your hair - right? Of course! If you can't hold on to the new length, something is wrong. But if your like many, retaining length can be a struggle, rest assured, I will provide you with my "tried and true" gems that have helped me over the years![Please note there are no miracle products that will make you retain length. It's all about the methods and techniques you incorporate daily, weekly and monthly into your regimen.]First things first, length retention starts with the care and protection of your ends and strands overall. The condition of your ends will determine the amount of length you retain. Here are my 7 Steps For Retaining Length On Relaxed Hair:Step #1 - Moisturize and Seal! One of the most important things you can incorporate into your hair journey is moisturizing and sealing your ends - Period! The ends of your hair are the oldest part of your hair, and not to mention, easily prone to dryness. Hair that is dry and brittle will snap and break off, thus leading to shorter hair. Using a water based moisturizer and sealing with an oil will lock the moisture into the hair increasing elasticity; therefore, preventing dryness and breakage. Breakage is the #1 cause for not retaining length; therefore, it's best to prevent it from happening in the first place. My advice is to moisturize your hair anytime it feels dry, rough, brittle etc. Remember, Dryness = breakage = shorter hair.Step #2 - Hide Your Hair! By keeping your ends protected and away from the elements i.e. weather, harsh fabrics etc. your ends can remain healthy and strong. Look to incorporate buns, braids, updo's, weaves, wigs etc. into your regimen, if possible, as a way to preserve your ends. Protecting your ends will not only prevent moisture from escaping the hair but also keep the ends reinforced and preserved by not exposing it to the elements. My advice is to protective style 99% of the time, if you are just starting out your hair journey or have a specific goal that you are trying to attain, in order to retain length.  Oh don't forget, always tie your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf and/or bonnet to prevent your hair from drying out!Step #3 - Deep Condition!Deep conditioning with heat is the foundation to any healthy hair journey. Deep conditioning for at least 25-30 minutes with heat (steamer, hooded dryer, heat cap etc.) restores strength and increases elasticity making the hair manageable and fortified to resist damage i.e. breakage. The hair is nourished from the inside out. Strong hair = less breakage = increased length retention. Maintaining a proper moisture/protein balance is crucial to achieve strong yet moisturized hair aiding in better length retention. My advice for those looking to increase their length retention quickly, incorporate deep conditioning into your regimen 2x/week with heat for 30 minutes mixed with Avocado oil, Coconut oil and Olive oil (3 Penetrating Oils that fortify the hair preventing damage). You will see a big difference!Step #4 Leave Your Hair Alone! Low manipulation is key in successfully retaining length.  Put down the comb, hot comb, flat iron, blow dryer and just let your hair be. No, seriously! The less you do to it, the better. Opt for finger combing, that way you don't loose hair unnecessarily. Incorporate no heat/protective styles into your regimen i.e. buns, braid outs, twist outs, perm rods, weaves, braids etc. to give your hair a b r e a k. If you need to comb your hair, use a wide tooth comb to do so, but finger detangle first! I finger comb my hair daily and detangle on wash days - which is twice a week. Less manipulation i.e combing, styling etc. prevents the loss of[...]

Wash Day Routine On My Relaxed Hair

Finally it's h e r e!!

My wash day routine is L I V E on my YouTube Channel! This highly requested video will show my entire step by step process. I did a poll on my Instagram Stories and 92% stated that they would like to see my wash day routine, so here it is.

I've been following this wash day process for the past 7-8 years without fail.  I complete this process on Sundays (once a week, every week). I always apply my protein treatments on dry hair (for better absorption) with heat, shampoo it out, follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner (mixed with oils) and then my leave-in conditioner. I do the scarf method - while air drying - until completely dry.

This routine has been working for me and my relaxed hair. I swear by all of the products that I use. On a few occasions I will substitute my conditioners and swap them out with other protein and moisturizing deep conditioners just to experiment :)

Products used in video:

Step 1: Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor and Virgin Coconut Oil (2 tsp)

Step 2: Keracare Sulfate Free Shampoo with Scalp Invigorator (Be sure to get yours for 50% off using discount code: HAIRLISTA5)

Step 3: Keracare Humecto Creme Conditioner mixed with Avocado Oil (1tsp), Coconut Oil (1tsp) and Olive Oil (1tsp)

Step 4: Creme of Nature Argan Buttermilk Hair Milk Leave-in Conditioner and Jojoba Oil

Step 5: Satin Scarf

That's it - Enjoy!

5 Reasons Why I Steam My Hair

Hair steaming has consistently been a part of my regimen since 2011. Steaming utilizes moist heat for better moisture penetration into your hair strands while deep conditioning. If you haven't steamed your hair, you are definitely missing out!!If you follow me on Instagram (@hairlicious) you would have seen on my IG Story a snippet of me deep conditioning under my hair steamer...I had quite a few ladies DM me asking me about the brand/model of my steamer. To be honest, there's no particular "brand name", but there is a label on the steamer that reads "KT 3010" (I'm assuming this is the model?!). Anyway, I received my steamer as a gift but I'm certain it can be found online for purchase. As you may/may not know, I have coarse 4b/c chemically relaxed hair therefore it craves hydration! I steam approximately 1x/week and I've noticed H U G E improvements in my hair, over the years, allowing me to achieve and maintain healthy moisturized hair.  Steaming has been a staple in my hair routine!Check out the 5 Reasons Why I Steam My Hair:1. Moist heat helps to raise the hair cuticles; therefore, allowing the deep conditioner to penetrate efficiently and effectively into the cortex of the hair strands for maximum results. 2. Provides ease in stretching my relaxers as the moist heat softens my new growth melting away dryness, tangles and knots. 3. Increases overall moisture and hydration levels in my hair decreasing breakage! My hair is no longer dry and thirsty but healthy and hydrated.4. Promotes a healthy scalp as the moist heat helps to open up my follicles and clean my scalp of any impurities, product build up etc. which can inhibited healthy hair growth. 5. Increases volume and fullness in my hair! After each use I notice my hair looks thicker and fuller. As the moist heat aids in allowing the deep conditioner to penetrate into the cortex, my strands are hydrated from the inside out.Do you Steam your hair? If so, how often? What steaming tool do you use?[...]

Braidout Tutorial on Dry Relaxed Hair - Ft. @CremeofNature Argan Oil Product Line

There's nothing I love more than a well defined Braidout!! ... Is it just me?! There's just something about the waves/curls, body and fullness that I fall in love with each time I rock this style. For years, Braidouts have been my "go-to" low-manipulation-heat-free-style of choice and perfect for any event or occasion. It's easy to do and the results are consistent! What I love most is that I can rock my Braidout for at least 2-3 days after, giving my hair a break from further manipulation! To achieve 2nd and 3rd day hair, at night all I do is scrunch some moisturizer (i.e. like a hair milk or butter) into my ends and put in a top knot bun. I protect the perimeter of my hair line with my satin scarf - that's it! The next morning I fluff, separate and go!Check out the tutorial below on How I Achieve my Braidouts (step by step) featuring the Creme of Nature Argan Oil Product line.Step 1 - I grab a section of freshly air dried hair. No need for neat parts.Step 2 - I squeeze a quarter size amount of Creme of Nature Argan Oil Buttermilk Leave-in in my hand and apply this amount per section as my moisture base.Step 3 - I rub it in thoroughly from root to tip.Step 4 - I use Creme of Nature Argan Oil Foam Lotion, squirt one pump per section, to set the braids and provide definition.Step 5 - After working the product into the hair, I spray (1x/section) my Creme of Nature Argan Oil Gloss & Shine Mist   Step 6 - I begin to braid the section firmly. I take my perm rods and roll the ends up to shoulder length for fullness and curl.Step 7 - Continue to section off the hair, braid and apply perm rods to the ends. No need for neat parts. I finish with a total of 6 sections.Step 8 - I wrap the perimeter of my hair with a satin scarf to prevent frizz. I also cover the braids in a satin bonnet for added protection.Step 9 - I unravel the braids the next morning. I like to add more Gloss and Shine Mist to my finger tips to prevent frizz when unraveling the braids. I take a wide tooth comb and lift the roots for added volume and fullness and to remove the "parts". I gently separate the waves/curls. Step 10 - All done!!What method/products do you use to create the perfect Braidout?[...]

I've tried my hardest to love them but they never loved me back. I mean, hair milks (no matter the brand) always made my hair feel great after the first application; however, hours later my hair is a dry crispy mess! I'm happy to say, things have changed since. Some how, I ended up trying the Creme of Nature Argan Oil Buttermilk Leave-in Hair Milk and my outlook on hair milks have drastically changed! How I Maintained Mid Back Length - Without A Setback!

Since the beginning of my hair journey, back in 2008, my goal length has always been mid-back length. Why mid back length and not waist length you ask? ....Well, I always thought in the back of my mind that mid-back length was that "happy medium" length…not too short..not too long, just perfect in the middle cascading down my back! For that reason, I never had a desire to go passed MBL and I wasn’t comfortable being above that length either. MBL was where I wanted to be and stayed!I reached my goal in 2010 (2 years later) and I’ve been maintaining my goal length ever since (a total of 7 years). I always say to ladies, it’s one thing to attain your goal but it’s another to maintain the goal you set out to achieve. Getting to MBL was a task full of its own challenges; however, maintaining it was another. It’s truly a lifestyle change!Over the years, I've found 5 simple yet powerful hair laws, that I swear by, that have allowed me to maintain my hair length for years without a setback!1. Consistently Consistent – Your list of hair do’s and don’ts become a part of your daily, weekly and monthly regimen and before you know it, it eventually becomes your lifestyle. I religiously stuck to my hair regimen and remained consistently committed to it - no matter what! The more my hair got nourishment and improved from deep treatments, prepoo’s and moisturizing the more I continued to do it until it became a natural habit. Maintaing a low experimental profile of products and techniques, after a phase of trial and error, helped tremendously. Though I may experiment with a few new products here and there, I remain loyal to my "tried and true" staple products and techniques that build my hair and produce consistent results. Your health hair habits attribute to heatlthier hair!2. Simplicity – I refrain from extravagant hair styles or sowing in false hair constantly. I don't have an elaborate regimen and mixtures of potions for hair growth. I stick to the basics i.e. shampoo once a week, deep condition twice a week, co-wash once a week, moisturize and seal daily, bun daily etc. and remain stern on not deviating from that norm. I welcome the experimentation of new products, however, I focus on that one product and implement it slowly to gage results.3. Say No To Damage! – I stay on top of my damage by incorporating a trimming schedule that works for me. By having a trimming schedule, it prevents further damage down the road which will lead to a setback. In between my semi-annual trims, I do mini trims or conduct a 'search and destroy' session when necessary. Trims keep my ends blunt, full and happy!4. Remain Gentle – I choose to remain gentle whenever I interact with my hair, whether it be removing knots, detangling, moisturizing, deep conditioning, shampoo’ing etc. I allow my fingers to do the heavy work by removing knots rather than using a comb. When I use my fingers I can actually feel the knots and tangles making it easier to remove as I know how much pressure to apply. I use this process to detangle my hair 99% of the time to avoid unnecessary breakage. When using a wide tooth comb, I ensure I comb my hair with ease.5. Protecting it – My ends remain protected! I keep them tucked away in the week and I wear my hair down on weekends, avoiding as much direct heat as possible. This balance has saved my hair from setbacks and it has allowed me to enjoy all of this hair I've worked so hard to grow!Overall, the consistency and simplicity of my regimen is the foundation that has attributed to the maintenance of my MBL hair - without a setback. Through trial and error, I've discovered the needs and wants for my hair allowing me to maintain my desired length with very little effort.[...]

Wash day: Flat Ironed For A Change!

I think it's safe to say that wash day was a success! Let me first start off by saying that I've missed my flat ironed hair. I have no issues with my air dried hair 95% of the time, but it's been months since "heat" has touched my strands and it definitely feels good!My wash day began with a shampoo session with ORS Olive Oil Sulfate Free Shampoo and then I  deep conditioned for 30 mins with heat using Keracare Humecto Conditioner mixed with my favourite oil combo; Avocado oil, Coconut oil and Olive oil.I air dried my hair with a little bit of Creme of Nature Argan Oil Buttermilk Leave-In and then I began to generously spray my hair and ends with my TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray.I didn't blow dry my hair while it was damp, I just waited until my hair was completely air dried. I then began to section my hair off and flat iron with my 2" Sedu Flat Iron (max. 2 passes through my hair). Here are my results below:My hair felt soft, shiny, and smooth as predicted when using Keracare Humecto and Tresemme Keratin Heat Protection Spray. My hair was well behaved let me tell you! With the help of my deep conditioning session, I was able to flat iron my hair in less than 1 hour (approx. 45 mins) - no tangles!I had a significant trim back in February 2017. My stylist, at the time, took off more than I asked of him and my hair was basically at or slightly above BSL (bra strap length). I was not happy nor did I even bother to take a photo - I was upset. Right now, I'm significantly passed BSL, at MBL but pretty much close to WL again. After that horrible experience, I just vowed to myself that I will not go back to my old stylist and just grow out my hair as quickly as possible. Moving forward, I plan on trimming little by little (1/4 - 1/2 and inch) with every relaxer rather than every 6 months.Just had to share...[...]

Why I'm Loving ‪@TaliahWaajid ‬Protective Mist Bodifier - Current Fav!

By now you probably know that I'm a die hard Scurl No Drip (Original) fan since...f o r e v e r! However, the original formula is getting harder and harder to find online and offline as it's been replaced by the new formula (which my hair doesn't really care for).

Over the past couple months, I revisited the Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier ("TWPMB") as a daily moisturizer for my ends, once again, I was surprisingly shocked at how my hair responded to it. My hair was extremely soft, moist, smooth, and not weighed down by product. This is  h u g e because I rarely find a moisturizer that actually agrees with my 4b/c hair. When using TWPMB breakage minimized and my hair/new growth was manageable. My ends are extra happy when I use TWPMB and seal with Jojoba oil! Let's not forget the coconut scent that lingers in your hair after each use :)

TWPMB is a glycerin based moisturizer but it's silicone free and paraben free - which I know many will love! It also has wheat germ extract, which is a ceramide, to help protect the hair while providing  strength.

Not only is this product a great substitute for Scurl No Drip Activator (original) but it works wonders on my relaxed hair though it seems targeted for naturals. The product is light (I use it on my freshly flat ironed hair too) and easily penetrates into the hair, without leaving a 'sticky feeling' on your strands. I love how the product comes in a 8 fl. oz. spray as well as a 23 fl. oz bottle (like the picture  above). I'm all about packaging and the more product I can get, the better. What I love most is that I can easily purchase it from my local Beauty Supply store whenever I run out.

Long story short, TWPMB is my daily moisturizer of choice right now!

3 Reasons Why Coconut Oil Needs To Be In Your Regimen

I know I know, another article on Coconut oil and it's benefits - Geez! But in all honesty, Coconut oil is truly a powerful oil aiding in the repair of damaged hair. Whether you are relaxed, texlaxed, transitioning, or natural, the usage of Coconut oil, to some degree, is essential in your regimen and healthy hair journey. Here's why:           [1] Coconut oil has a high affinity for hair protein which aids in reducing protein loss in  damaged and undamaged hair. Reducing protein loss reinforces the integrity of the hair promoting the increase of thickness in your hair.           [2] Easily penetrates the hair shaft due to its low molecular weight nourishing the hair                       from the inside out improving hair porosity.             [3] Promotes hair growth, healthier ends and reduces hair fall by improving scalp health. Those who have chemically treated hair (relaxed hair, coloured hair etc.) benefit the most from having Coconut oil in their regimen. Let's face it, it's no secret that chemical treatments damage the structure of the hair cuticle (to some degree) in order to manipulate the strands to a 'permanent' state; thus, leaving it more prone to breakage. Coconut oil, when applied consistently, fortifies the strands increasing durability and strength by filling the cracks along the hair shaft caused by chemical treatments.Too, Coconut oil acts like a 'hair protector' by preventing the swelling and contraction of the hair shaft when absorbing water.  During washes, the frequent swelling and de-swelling of the cuticle can cause holes/damage along the hair shaft over time. Coconut oil, consistently applied to the hair, assists in improving hair porosity and cuticle structure. Low porosity hair can also benefit from Coconut oil by using it in the conditioning phase (prepoo, added to your deep conditioner, etc.) of a regimen and in small doses.Using Coconut oil, whether it be in the conditioning phase or as a leave-in/sealant in your regimen, will help reinforce the strength and integrity of your strands. Using this oil consistently will allow your hair to reap the most benefits and your hair will thank you for it!! [TIP]: For those who are sensitive to Coconut oil and experience rigid/rough hair when using it as a sealant, the trick is to use a finger dap amount per section and work it into the hair. I find that less is more with Coconut oil as it's very easy to overdo it.I notice that when I consistently use Coconut oil in my regimen (in the conditioning phase i.e. prepoo - prior to washing), my ends remain preserved and intact preventing frequent trims. After I prepoo with Coconut oil (15-20mins with heat) I notice softer and smoother hair with less friction when styling. The durability of my hair improves along with the fullness of my hair!I'm currently hosting a Coconut Oil Challenge on, in the groups section, in hopes of improving the overall health of my hair by using Coconut oil for a total of 3 months - June 1st - Sept. 1st 2017. I'm participating in the Advance level and I'm excited. Come join me :) See you online![...]

I was on the @NnekaElliott Show! #NnekaShow

Have you seen the new #Nnekashow? For those who don't know, 'Nneka' is a lifestyle talk show for the Caribbean diaspora in Toronto. The show focuses on fashion, beauty, food, culture etc., basically everything I love. And it recently launched online! It was truly an honour hanging out with the lovely, talented, award winning TV news gal, Nneka Elliot. I've been a fan of Nneka for yearsss. To think that I would ever collaborate with this media gal, was probably the furthest thing from my mind.  I was elated to be invited on set and to finally meet her as a guest on her new show. Being on set was so nerve wracking! No, seriously! lol  There's nothing like having big bright lights, huge cameras and tons of people behind the cameras staring at you while you speak! But as the camera's started rolling and as we, Nneka and I, began to converse, the pressure began to wear off.  The experience was awesome to say the least! The set, decor, props were simple yet elegant with a Caribbean flare. Of course, Nneka and I share a love for ALL things HAIR! Nneka allowed me to talk through a quick visual demonstration of my favourite 'go-to' heat free hairstyle - a Braidout! Oh, I think I taught Nneka a thing or two about putting a "pineapple" on my hair at night to preserve my style LOL. *Clears throat* the correct term is "pineappling" at night :) Check out the video below: allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="" width="560">And yes, I had to sneak in my 'on set' selfie :)Couldn't leave without a selfie with Nneka! Such a pleasure meeting you. Thanks for having me Xoxo #Funtimes #Nnekashow[...]

Wash Day Twist Out! - Luster's Pink (@LustersPINK) Shea Butter Coconut Oil Line

Wash day (Sunday) has come and gone but my hair remains soft and smooth - thanks to Luster's Pink Shea Butter and Coconut Oil line!I've been using these products for months now and I have definitely found my favs! My hair really likes the Sulfate Free Shampoo, Moisturizing & Silkening Conditioner and the Silkening Leave-in Conditioner. What I love most is the caulk full of quality ingredients mixed with the fresh coconut scent that is present in every product within the line. When using the shampoo on my relaxed hair, my felt extremely moist and soft during and after lathering - despite there being protein in the ingredients. The low lathering shampoo didn't strip my hair of its natural oils. It did aid in the detangling process - which is always a bonus. The shampoo rinsed out easily and left no residue behind.I t-shirt dried my hair and proceeded to whip up my moisturizing conditioner mix i.e. Moisturizing & Silkening Conditioner + Luster's Pink Castor oil, Jojoba and Grapeseed Oil to the DC for extra conditioning. I went under the dryer for 25-30 mins to allow the conditioner to penetrate deep into my strandsUpon rising out the DC, my hair felt soft to the touch and smooth. Though the conditioner is light in consistency, as I ran my fingers through my hair, I knew the conditioner penetrated. I t-shirt dried for a total of 15 mins to allow the t-shirt to absorb all of the excess water. I then applied a quarter size amount of the leave-in conditioner to various sections of my hair, especially my new growth.I've used this leave-in conditioner on both dry and damp hair, several times, and I can say that it wins hands down on wet/damp hair. With its "lotion-like" consistency, the leave-in is sooooo slippy its incredible! Detangling is a breeze. The mixture of Panthenol, Glycerin and Marshmellow root extract is just on point. I always find myself reaching for the leave-in and using it on wash day, whether or not I use the entire product line. The leave-in conditioner is also a new growth tamer! As a final step, I began to style my hair using the curl and twist pudding along with some perm rods for a twist-out. I let it air dry overnight and removed the rods in the morning! Loving my shine!!Overall, the Luster's Pink Shea Butter and Coconut Oil line truly surprised me! We all know Pink lotion had a "negative" representation in the healthy hair care world due to its "no-no" ingredients i.e. mineral oil, petrolatum etc. But its evident that the team over at Luster's Pink have truly been attentive in including all the right combinations of great ingredients to enhance the product experience and improve hair health. From the revamped packaging to the inclusion of natural hair oils and butters, Luster's Pink hit a home run with the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil product line!the Ingredients, if your curious to know....Luster's Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Sulfate Free Shampoo IngredientsDeionized Water, Disodium Cocoamphodipropionate, Trideceth-7, Carboxylic Acid, Cocamide MEA, Polyquaternium-10, Acrylates Copolymer, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Shea Butter, Olive oil, Coconut Oil, Argan Oil PEG-8 Esters, Jojoba oil, Wheat germ oil, Panthenol, Vitamin E, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Sodium Cocoyl Collagen Amino Acids, Linolenic Acids, Cocoyl Sarcosine, Wheat Germ Acid, Acetamide MEA, Sorbital, Propylene Glycol, Sulfur, Polysorbate 80, Oleth-10, Glycol Stearate, PEG-150 Distearate, Polyquaternium-47, Citrus Acid, Disodium EDTA, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisthiazolinone, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance, Hexy[...]

Toronto's #LoveYourHairLive Hair Conference Featuring The Science of Black Hair - Audrey Davis-Sivasothy - My Hair Idol!

Saturday was a dream come true for two reasons!One.... I finally had some free time in my schedule to actually attend a Hair Conference in my OWN town andTwo ... I had the pleasure of meeting my long-time hair care idol - Audrey Davis-Sivasothy! That's right, the author of infamous Hair Care Bible, The Science of Black Hair.If you followed me on Twitter (@hairlicious) and my InstaStory on Instagram (@hairlicious), you would have experienced highlights of this event!#LoveYourHairLive was held on Saturday April 29, 2017. It was a hair, beauty and wellness conference for Naturalistas in Toronto - but I went as a relaxed Hairlista to suck up any knowledge I could. The conference was created by Dr. Susan Walker, ND, WTS the owner of Earthtones Naturals Hair Care line. The conference had a great balance of information that would assist anyone taking care of their hair from the inside out.  Dr. Susan Walker provided a comprehensive presentation on methods to achieve healthier hair through the foods you eat and why its important to eat right for optimal hair growth. Of course nutrition plays a huge role in your healthy hair care regimen and I'm glad Dr. Walker zoned in on diet. My takeaway from this portion of the seminar is that: with every meal, there should be a protein component along with some vegetables accompanied by LOTS of water throughout the day!The second portion of the conference was dedicated to Audrey Davis-Sivasothy. Let me just school you on something right quick! Audrey, aka SistaSlick (her alias on the hair boards back in the day), has been my hair inspiration from 2007. I stalked her hair journey through black hair care forums, hair albums etc. and fell in love with her hair progress. I always considered "us" to be hair texture twins, although she didn't know it! Every product she used on her relaxed strands worked on my hair to a "T".  She's always been knowledgeable in the hair care field and I've learned so much from her!! The progress she achieved with her relaxed hair motivated and inspired me to start taking better care of my hair.Audrey, with her soft southern accent, began her hair talk informing all the hairsistas that we (as black women) don't have a hair growth problem, we have a length retention problem! #Facts! I must say, Audrey packed her presentation with a chock full of demonstrations to give us amazing visuals to help comprehend the content better and to obtain great take away knowledge that can easily be applied i.e.Hair Growth Equation: High Moisture + Low Manipulation + Time = Hair Growth! #KeepingItSimple. Audrey truly broke down the basics of healthy hair care for any and everyone to understand. My favourite part was the interactive "Lets Build A Moisturizer" game :) Participants were each given an ingredient card and were then instructed to build a moisturizer by arranging the ingredients in order that would be most beneficial to our hair. See below.Much betterrrrr. Check out how mineral oil was disqualified! Ha! I think I would have swapped honey and replaced it with glycerin, so its much higher on the ingredient list...What about you?The conference ended off with a panel discussion on hair typing and whether or not it truly matters in the hair care world. Thoughts surrounding Texturism was discussed. Texturism is real and frequently creates division within our hair community. There were many great responses by the panelists Ndija (The Natural Hair Advocate), Dr. Susan Walker (Earthtones Naturals) and Canadian Naturalistas.Oh, and as a bonus, Audrey held a private VIP session focusing on ha[...]

My New Fragrances for Spring!

Theres nothing better than to kick off a new season with some of your favourite scents that will have others asking you - what are you wearing?!!The other day, I walked into Sephora to repurchase my staple Tom Ford - Black Orchid, which is a timeless woodsy/spicy scent that I typically wear in the fall/winter but its perfect for all year 'round. This time around I quickly changed my mind as I wanted something lighter, floral and fresh - inspired by Spring. I purchased a few new travel (perfect to transport in my purse) size fragrances that are affordable and smell amazing! C L E A N  Reserve - Warm CottonIf you are one that loves fresh clean scents this one is for you! When I first came across this fragrance it immediately reminded me of fresh linen straight out of the laundry. Its that "fresh out the shower" type of scent that just lingers on your skin all day long. Its nothing but pure freshness in a bottle. It can easily uplift your mood with every sniff. This scent can be worn daily and is ideal for daytime wear.C L E A N  Reserve - RainNow this fragrance is perfect for Spring! Think...fresh aquatic rainfall type scent - yup! Rain has  slight hints of floral with dewy melon and sheer musk. Its very light and airy and can easily be layered with Warm Cotton for a bigger WOW factor! Its so fresh and so clean. This scent can be worn daily and is ideal for daytime wear.Tory Burch - Love RelentlesslyMy favourite right now! This fragrance carries warm floral notes that captures a very feminine romantic feel. The florals embody that spring vibe with a mix of pink pepper and rose notes. I've been wearing this on date nights and my hubby loves this one the most! Nothing but hugs and kisses with this one so I know that means its a win for him! Xoxo. This scent lingers for hours and perfect for evening wear. Tory Burch - Jolie Fleur RoseSuch a unique blend! Just picture the aroma of classic rose with a hint of bold woodsy and musk notes. A little goes a long way and lasts throughout the day. This fragrance was inspired by the flowers in Tory Burch's garden. Though it boasts floral notes, it's sexy enough to wear in the daytime or evening. It's a 'must have' scent to debut in Spring! I rock this daily! What are some of your favourite fragrances for Spring? or all year 'round?[...]

Hairlista Inc. is BACK!

I just want to start off by saying that I truly appreciate everyone's patience and never ending support over the past few months. I apologize for any inconvenience this down time may have caused. It's been a crazy experience to say the least. Lots of time, energy, thought and tears were put into the migration and reconstruction of

As you may or may not know, was on a platform called As Hairlista Inc. started to climb past the 100K member mark, they started charging several hundreds of US dollars (mind you, we're based in Canada so the exchange rate was craziness!) for a platform that didn't provide the best service or flexibility for the value!

The difficult decision of staying and then charging members vs. migrating to a whole new platform while preserving all of the content, was a challenge to say the least. Most companies would go with the first route and begin charging users, however, it just wasn't in my heart to act on. I took the scary path with the most variables and unknown outcome. It was a risk that I felt I would not regret.

Long story short, in efforts to keep Hairlista Inc. free, this reconstruction had to take place. Some may not understand this change, but I am hopeful that with time members will adapt to the concept, new look, and functions of the site.

There is no monthly fee to join - it's totally free! As a gesture of your appreciation for Hairlista Inc., please consider supporting our efforts with a donation! All donations will go to site maintenance and server fees in order to keep Hairlista Inc. free for all of its users. All donations of any amount is a blessing!

Hair Question: Lye vs. No Lye Relaxer - The Difference + Pros and Cons

On Instagram, one of my followers asked me what the difference was between Lye and No Lye relaxers? Not only is this a great topic, but it's a common question that most relaxed ladies have! So I thought a blog post would be the best way to discuss the difference and open up a conversation about it :)Lye relaxers - easier on the hair, harsher on the scalpIn lye relaxers, the active ingredient in breaking down the hair bonds is called sodium hydroxide (lye). Lye relaxers typically come premixed in a tub and ready to use. Professionals in salons typically use this type of relaxer. Lye relaxers tend to carry a higher pH and must be applied carefully to avoid irritation/burning to the scalp. Lye relaxers give off a low degree of hair bond breakage that preserves the natural strength and elasticity of the hair*.No Lye Relaxers - easier on the scalp and harsher on the hairIn no lye relaxers, the active ingredient is guanidine hydroxide (no lye)*. No lye relaxers are packaged in box kits that need to be mixed in order to activate the formula.  No lye relaxers are typically classified as being extremely drying to the hair. After mixing the ingredients together, the chemical reaction within the relaxer creates calcium deposits which then develop on the hair shaft and decrease the hairs ability to absorb moisture. Using a chelating shampoo to remove the mineral deposits can easily resolve this issue.Let's simplify this a bit further...Lye RelaxersPros- does not leave drying mineral deposits on the hair (hair feels softer and silkier)- premixed and ready to use- low degree of bond breakage = more strength and elasticity left in the hair- good for several applicationsCons- higher pH- harsher on the scalp (can cause burning and scalp irritation) if used incorrectlyNo Lye RelaxersPros- lower pH- less irritating on the scalpCons- leaves drying mineral deposits on the hair- good for only one application- takes longer to process the hair (could lead to over-processed hair if left on for too long because of slow processing time)I've always been an avid Lye relaxer user, predating my hair journey, as I used to get my hair done at the salon and they only used lye relaxers. Box relaxer wasn't even an option! Nor did I know the difference at the time. For the past 9 years I've been using the ORS Olive Oil Professional Lye Relaxer in Normal Strength and I love the results I get after using it - this is nothing new LOL! Don't think I'll switch anytime soon :)What type of relaxer do you use? Lye or No Lye? Have you tried both? Which do you prefer?*Source: The Science of Black Hair [...]

Birthday Blessings! Another Year Wiser!

Truly blessed and grateful for another year! Thank you Jesus!

Reflecting back, it's been quite a year! I married my best friend (that alone makes it the best year ever!! Woot woot), strengthened old friendships while tightening my innermost "intimate" friendship circles (realizing who has my best interest at heart), remodeled and changed platforms for (almost ready to launch) and just living life as a wife, mom, blogger and sister/friend.

Through it all, God has answered my prayers by strengthen me - mentally, spiritually, intellectually. He has increased my wisdom in various areas of my life that I just simply never took the time to focus on. I'm thankful for the life experiences, good or bad, that have brought me to where I am today. Most of all, I value the opportunity to help others (I got luv for my Hairlistas!!) and for the love and support I continue to receive in return! It's such a blessing.

Cheers to another year🎈

My Relaxer Day Essentials - Featuring ORS Olive Oil Relaxer and ORS Replenishing Conditioner

Nothing makes me happier than to relax my hair using the brand I trust most - ORS Olive Oil Professional Crème Relaxer and ORS Replenishing Conditioner!I look forward to relaxer day not only because I get to see progress i.e. length, thickness etc., but my results are predictable and that's what I love most.ORS Olive Oil Professional Relaxer has been a staple in my healthy hair regimen for years - I'm talking 2009/10!! It's Bae ❤ I use the Normal strength for my coarse 4b/c strands. Normal strength processes slower - which is a good thing for me. I find that this strength is mild for my hair as it preserves just the right amount of texture giving my hair body and fullness. I apply my relaxer using my Sprush (in pic above) and the relaxer stays on my new growth for exactly 20 minutes (I use the timer on my phone to ensure I don't go over). I follow up with my neutralizing shampoo process, which is a total of approximately 20 minutes (I do this to ensure the relaxer is completely out of my hair) and then I deep condition.ORS Replenishing Conditioner is my "go-to" treatment on relaxer day. Why? Because it has the best moisture/protein balance that my hair craves right after a relaxer. Remember, relaxers strip the protein out of your hair, so its best to replenish (no pun intended LOL) the protein back into the hair - sooner than later. Not to mention, the conditioner also helps to restore the moisture levels back into the hair. Don't get me started on the detangling abilities either - my goodness! It's a gem.Mixing my ORS Replenishing Conditioner with a little Olive oil, Coconut Oil and Avocado Oil for extra penetration and nutrients is a ritual of mine. In fact, if I relax fairly late in the evening (I relax my hair at home), I will deep condition overnight and my hair is like warm butter when I rinse in the morning!! Fact!!My relaxer day is nothing without these essential products. They are staples and my hair loves them!My Relaxer Results: As you can see in the pictures below, my hair is relaxed yet has texture. What is your favourite relaxer to use? What conditioner do you follow up with on relaxer day?[...]

The TIL Story - Tropic Isle Living Owner Gives Shoutout to Hairlicious & Hairlista Inc.

You all know how much I love Tropic Isle Living Products especially the Jamaican Black Castor Oil - my staple! Well, the lovely owner Lois Reid-Hines (in pic to my right) has put together an amazing 3 part series of the history of Tropical Isle Living, how it became their business (interesting story by the way), the climb, and the future direction of the business. I've had the pleasure of meeting the Hines family and I must say they are truly genuine and such a pleasure to be around. They are so passionate in what they do and put nothing but love behind their products and service.

Approximately 24 minutes into Part Two: The Climb, Lois mentions Hairlicious & Hairlista Inc. as a force that helped increase the online presence of Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Tropic Isle Living as a whole. I am so honoured and humbled to be a part of the TIL (Tropic Isle Living) Story.  JBCO has been my hair growth staple since 2009. I religiously applied it to my scalp and began to notice an increase in growth and thickness in my hair. From then, I began my annual Castor Oil Challenges gathering approximately 500-1000 Hairlista members in each challenge!

The TIL family has supported me over the years and through each and every Castor Oil Challenge. For that, I am grateful and I thank them from the bottom on my heart.

Check out this inspirational and touching 3 part special series below!

Video: Pigtail Braid Out Tutorial

For years I've always used two (2) methods for achieving a braid-out. However, this method, which I like to call "Pig tail braid out",  is by far the easiest, "laziest" braid-out ever but the results are so consistent - I just love it!

I achieved this look with the help of just 2 products i.e. Care Free Curl Gold moisturizer and my Jojoba oil as a sealant. I applied the products on damp co-washed hair and I co-washed with Pantene Relaxed Moisturizing Conditioner. Very simple!

I chose Care Free Curl Gold because it locks in moisture, helps to detangle my strands and it gives my waves a nice shine/sheen. My waves don't revert or frizz. I love how it goes me that wet n wavy look. I typically get 2-3 day hair by putting my hair in a "pineapple" at night. Low manipulation is key!

Sometimes I'll wear it down with accessories, other times I wear it half up half down or with a top knot!

Check out my video on how I achieved these looks:
