The South Beach Bum Rides Again

I might have something to say one of these days.(image) (image) (image)

THIS WILL PROBABLY NOT MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE

2012-07-10T14:15:28.182-04:00

This graph represents my exercise regime and my mood/health. So guess when I got my new job and was feeling good and getting lost of physical activity? Guess when I was diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent radical surgery to remove it? Guess when I started feeling better? Guess when I broke my foot? Guess when I got bronchitis and lost my job?

But please also note that the graph extends well into the future and I've started living again. I just hope it lasts!

STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER PEOPLE

MY EXPERIENCE WITH BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

2012-07-10T14:15:28.201-04:00

(image)
It started out several years ago. I had just gotten a second pair of eyeglasses -- Prada -- at cost. I already had one pair of D&G's for a while, but when the opportunity arose to get the Prada frames at cost, I went for it. And I loved them. And so did my friends. The thing was, and if you think about it for a minute, you'll realize you see this all the time, the glasses rubbed the skin on the bridge of my nose and eventually the skin broke. And healed. And then broke again. And healed again. Now, I have lived in South Florida since 1983 and have not been the most cautious person regarding the sun; however, I always tried to be reasonable. I love the sun and the warm water, but I try very hard to never get burned. Sometimes, unfortunately, I did.

Of course, as a child growing up in North Carolina in the 1960s, getting your first summer burn was as natural as the dogwood trees blooming. Just like toughening up your feet so you could run around barefoot all summer. Life was so much simpler then.

So here's the thing, eventually the rubbing, and breaking of skin, and healing over the course of several years left me with a very, very small scar on the bridge of my nose. I eventually made the decision to stop wearing the glasses at all times in order to let that heal completely. Then I moved to Chicago and even without the glasses, that fragile scar tissue continued to break (dry skin) and heal. When I moved back to South Beach, the sun helped to heal it up.

But something had changed. That little scar on the bridge of my nose now seemed DIFFERENT. There was an indentation in the middle. And some vascular activity that was not there before. And around the edge of the scar, which was not even a 1/4 of an inch in diameter, there was a tiny ridge of some sort. Something had definitely changed. I did a little research, read somewhere that those were the signs of basal cell carcinoma and got myself to a dermatologist.

I was employed and had insurance at the time and when I went to see the dermatologist was told that everything was preapproved.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ON SOUTH BEACH

2012-07-10T14:15:28.215-04:00

(image) I have shamelessly taken this photo from SFDB (and no, I do not expect a link since I'm not really sure if blogging will resume or not) because I really liked it. And because I did not take photos of the party on South Beach this weekend. Mostly because I avoided it.

However, on Saturday I took the C Bus from 29th and Indian Creek (where I live now) to 5th and Alton (Vitamin Shoppe, Ross -- yes, Ross, Petsmart, and Publix). I know -- the glamorous South Beach lifestyle.

Here's my take. I was in college from circa 1979 to 1983 in North Carolina. And I was one of those college kids who was all too willing to pile into a car and head to Fort Lauderdale and go nuts during Spring Break. And lives were lost (mostly falling off of hotel balconies) and many people either were or should have been incarcerated For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge on the street and in the bushes and engaging in all sorts of inappropriate behavior. So, I cannot begrudge these young people their fun. I also (as a middle-aged gay white male) do not have to get into the middle of all that. Let the kids have their fun. Let them fuck up. Let them offend.

The biggest problem from where I stand is the folks who lose money. Our friend who has worked at Lario's for the last fifteen years said they had three tables all day and evening Saturday until management closed up shop and sent all the employees home. Another friend sold $1,500 worth of Prada sunglasses by the [insert name of luxury hotel] pool on Friday, but on Saturday stood out in the sun and heat and sold nothing.

Then there are the kids who thought it would be a good idea to have a cookout and invite all their friend IN THEIR HOTEL ROOM. A-hem, no, you do not set up a grill in your luxury hotel room.

What I myself saw was a LOT of sweaty morbidly obese women in tiny little bathing suits perched on stiletto heels at 2:00 in the afternoon, sweating and bouncing down Collins Avenue. I would suggest that if they would spend just a little of the time and energy they devote to their clothes and their hair on a healthy diet and some sort of physical activity or exercise program, they would look and feel better and would probably be a lot more attractive to a little bit higher quality male than the poor schmucks they are going to wind up schtupping (sp?) tonight.

Later, traffic was at an absolute standstill on Collins headed south up past Indian Creek and 30th. That seems like lots of fun.

The thing is it's nothing new and it has nothing to do with the color of anyone's skin. It's American Graffiti, it's Woodstock, its Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale. I refuse to judge. I am very, very amused. I am very, very grateful that I do not have to participate.(image) (image) (image)

THANKFULLY - ONE BLOCK AWAY FROM THE DIRT

2012-07-10T14:15:28.192-04:00

No oil spill on Miami Beach yet. I suppose we can no longer take this for granted. It is a beautiful day and the only thing I saw in the water that seemed out of place was a pink bouganville flower. Water's got considerably warmer since last week as well. If every day could be like this.[...]

A PRETTY PICTURE

2012-07-10T14:15:28.203-04:00

Here's what my street looks like this morning (and every morning for the past week). There was more mud and less dust a few days ago. I'm not sure how long this is supposed to take, but it's pretty damdned awful.[...]

AND AN AMUSING STORY

2012-07-10T14:15:28.205-04:00

As we arrived at the pool party and were approaching a group of friends, a fellow I did not know was walking towards me with his camera held in front of him. He announced, "I am going to take a picture of YOU for Bear Magazine. You're gorgeous!"

WTF! Bear Magazine? I've never even heard of such a publication, but am quite sure that I do NOT belong in its pages! I am very unhappily aware that I have put on some weight in the last year and since I had not shaved in about five days I had quite a bit of grey scruff on my face, but I hardly think that qualifies me as being a "bear." Grrr! I am drinking nothing but carrot juice for the next two weeks. The twenty pounds I put on in the last year is coming off now. Where are my running shoes?!?(image) (image) (image)

TWO QUICK OBSERVATIONS ON MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE

2012-07-10T14:15:28.155-04:00

First of all, my very few photos of the beginning of the parade show no indication of the massive turnout which I was extremely impressed by. I am no expert at crowd estimates, but I don't think 30,000 people would be much of an exaggeration. There were a LOT of people there.

Second, what a lovely variety of people that you would rarely ever see in the same place at the same time. Of course, there were drag queens, dykes on bikes, scantily clad tattooed muscle boys, but more importantly there were straight and gay families with children, there were surprised and delighted tourists (although I did detect a very few shocked and unhappy faces), teenagers, old folks, African-Americans, Hispanics, white folks, Asians, truly all the colors of that silly rainblow flag. And everyone interacting and being friendly and courteous and kind -- very unusual behavior in Miami! An acquaintance of mine who now lives in North Carolina made the comment "The difference between Miami and North Carolina is that in North Carolina people wave with five fingers, not one." Well, everyone in Miami Beach was waving with all five fingers yesterday afternoon. I was a great day. The Pool Party at the Victor Hotel was very, very nice. But the free party on the beach with Crystal Waters, Robin S, Danny Tenaglia and Estelle was really rockin'!

I am so glad I was able to participate this year. I had a great time. I also kept my drinking to a minimum, called it quits quite early, got a good night's sleep and feel pretty darned good today, despire the rainy weather. At least the weather was nice all day yesterday.(image) (image) (image)

READER'S DIGEST VERSION

2012-07-10T14:15:28.218-04:00

Fourteen months of unemployed, uninsured, broke and homeless. Thankfully I am an entitled white bee-otch, son of a D.A.R. mother. And so I never slept on the street or sold my ass(image) (image) (image)

so I was able to just relax and have fun with The Countess and Mrs. Astor.
But I have to say, the concept of putting the local Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce in a freakin' Duck Tours (or whatever it's called) vehicle is PURE MIAMI BEACH as it should be.

I honestly believe the main reason I love calling this place home is that there is no possible way to ever take any of it seriously. And that is a very good thing!(image) (image) (image)

I was determined NOT to bring my camera, and then decided to charge up and bring along the small one. Early this morning I decided to bring along the better camera (with the better zoom). Unfortunately, I did not have time to charge it sufficiently. Thus, I will share the first fifteen minutes of the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade and Festival, which by the way was SOOOOOOOO much better than I ever could have imagined. And hoodathunkit, a classic car show to boot!(image) (image) (image)
