My kid's rooms get so messy that every couple of months I go in and spend 1/2 a day cleaning out clutter, dusting, and getting things back to normal. It drives me nuts! I don't understand it. My room was always my sanctuary when I was a kid and I treasured it. It all just makes me stand, stare, and scratch my head. I'll have to put your plan into action after the new year. Thanks for the good ideas.

I really needed to read this post today. I walked by my 4 yr. old DD's room and thought I need to "teach" her how to clean or not expect it to be done to my expectation. Thanks!

Great ideas! My daughters are now 12, 11, and 8. Yesterday we went to a friends house (while she was gone) to surprise her. We cleaned her house from top to bottom. It was wonderful to be able to give each girl a job and know that it would get done thoroughly! All that training really does pay off! Now we can minister to others!

Much easy to teach a five year old to clean their room - it doesn't work when they reach 17 and 20.

Just found your blog. I've been blog hopping tonight.

I've skipped around and bit here and like what I see on your blog.

(I usually leave very thoughtful comments... but right now... I can barely keep my eyes open. Sorry.)

Just wanted to let you know I was here! :)

Thank you for breaking it down to those easy steps. I think the basket idea is great, so as not to get overwhelmed. I'm gonna try that myself.

Great advice! I should have my husband read this. He'll tell our sons to go do this or go do that and expects them to know how to do it properly. He doesn't quite get that he needs to break it down for them or show them how or at least supervise what they're doing. I want them to grow up to be capable men and husbands.

Ironically, my hubby's favorite quote is, "Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime." I have to get him to understand the "teach" part!

Blessings, Leslie

Oh, my daughter is constantly dragging things out and placing them in the middle of our den. I wish I had a dollar for each time I tell her to pick up her things and put them away.

Excellent tips...some I need to obide by for sure! We have a tendency to stash and dash..or just dash! But they have gotten pretty good about putting things in their proper places. Thanks for the extra encouragement...they will be needed during the next week with all the extra goodies coming and needing to find a place! ;)

Nan-

Sounds like a great idea but I don't really have tons of things that lay around, and if I do it somehow ALWAYS becomes trash LOL...

But I will teach the boys this because honestly I don't think I have ever showed them!!! Thanks for the reminder lesson!

Wow! This was great! Where were you 10 years ago when I was trying to accomplish this training? I guess I could still start now! If you look at my kids' room. You would know that I did not do a very good job training them. Maybe it is time to give it a second, third, I mean millionth try. :) I could use some of these tricks myself. :)
Thanks Nan!

Nan,

Nice meeting you and thanks for your comment! :) So glad you have the experience and are pleased to share with those moms with little ones still in the nest.

I know I will find lots of ideas from your blog. I went on the index card link and it definitely looks like I might have to read more into this.

I find that most of my time is spent just maintaining and will shove everything else under the carpert...so to speak...LOL Then I tell myself "I'll get to it later" and realize months later, I haven't.

I am realizing though that many of the issues I struggle with are all related to my heart. The Lord just revealed this to me the other day. Boy oh Boy, what a work I am :) When ya think ya have it figured out and then.....

Thanks for stopping by!

As soon as my kids could half way understand what I was saying they were being trained. I tell them that one day they will have a family and be responsible for all of this stuff. I asked them, "Do you want your children to think you are a slob?"
