Lakeland Public Library Writer's Group -- TONIGHT!!!

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 18:11:00 +0000

Are you willing to grow as a writer?

The first meeting of the LPL Writers' Group will be tonight (Wednesday, February 3) at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Library at 100 Lake Morton Drive, in Lakeland.

Brenda Patterson, the librarian in charge of adult programming for the Lakeland Public Libraries and in charge of the writers' group. Patterson has personally participated in poetry writing groups since 1993. She lists the best benefit to writing groups as validation.

"You feel validated as a writer. You are part of a group of people who recognize that you desire to write and the you are a writer," said Patterson. "It will help you improve--it polishes your writing, if you are willing to grow."

If you are wanting to grow as a writer this is your chance.

Patterson plans on this being an ongoing group that will meet the first Wednesday of every month.

The first meeting will be a "getting-to-know-you" meeting.

"We may have a few interesting writing exercises for fun," said Patterson. "And everyone should be willing to share how much they've written, or if they have written at all."

Depending on how many people join, group members will get to share their work in future meetings for constructive critic. Patterson also plans to include information on publication.

For more information contact Brenda Patterson Brenda.Patterson@lakelandgov.net

Happy Dewey Decimal Day!

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 13:00:00 +0000

DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM DAY

Dewey Decimal system Day is observed annually on Dcember 10, because December 10, 1851 is the birthday of Melvil Dewey (1851-1931). Dewey was the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System of library classification.

The Dewey Decimal System has been used in the United States since 1876. The system is used in 200,000 libraries in at least 135 countries, making it the world's most used classification system.

Libraries previously had given book permanent shelf locations that were related to the order of acquisition rather than topic. The Dewey system assigns nonfiction books a library location based on subject, using a three-digit number for main classes, with fractional decimals allowing expansion for further detail. This makes it possible to find any particular book using the number, and to return it to its proper place on the library shelves.

A bit of Dewey Trivia:

Dewey was very interested in simplified spelling and changed his own name from the "Melville Louis Kossuth" he was born with, to the "Melvil" we know today. He also dropped his two middle names, and for a time he even spelled his last name "Dui."

Dewey invented his library classification system when he was only 21 and working as a student assistant at the library at Amherst College.

Dewey is credited as pioneering the modern profession of librarian.

In 1876 he helped establish the ALA (American Library Association).

Dewey was a pioneer in library education. As the librarian at Columbia College in New York, he founded the first library school there in 1887.

We found this information on WikiPedia. You can find this and more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewey_Decimal_Classification
