A production facility had areas on elevated mezzanines that needed to be secured, and the production area had different safety needs than the pallet drop areas. One area was configured for loads up to three pallets wide, while others had tall loads that needed to be fed into a production platform. A large flavor and fragrance company needed to secure the ledges of their pallet drop areas. Employees were working at levels over ten feet off of the ground in order to accommodate the large hoppers being used in the operations. Employees picked from pallets at the ledge, and then dumped bags of ingredients into hoppers for processing; this operation invited employees towards to the unguarded ledges and lifting heavy bags of ingredients from that location. In addition, the material was comprised of food products, so any guarding solution would have to be manufactured out of stainless steel with specific sanitary requirements.

Reading Crane and Engineering Co. installed this 200-ton crane, equipped with 2 R&M SXL 100-ton hoists, into a Rhoads Industries heavy manufacturing facility. The building is used for large steel fabrication and for assembly of large components for industrial contractors, such as Northrop Grumman. Reading Crane has been engineering, designing, building, installing, inspecting and providing parts for overhead cranes and hoists since 1905. The Facilities Manager used off-the-shelf eye-bolts and wire cabling to create a simple off-set system. Eye-bolts were bolted to the holes in the rack uprights. Wire cabling was threaded through the eye-bolts to create a perimeter around each bay, off-set approximately 4-1/2” from the rack beams. Cable ties were used to attach the plastic netting to the perimeter system.
