Ad Viewership

Thu, 11 Jan 2018 12:33:52 CST

Would it be helpful if a seller could call-up a list of repeat viewers of his item. It seems many items take some time to sell and it might speed things up if the seller could approach repeated viewers (whose accumulated number may represent more than a passing interest in the item) through BHO itself. Any resulting sale of the item would still remain via BHO, ensuring its sales fee. What privacy concerns, if any, would members who repeatedly look at an item cite as an argument against the collection of this new data? Just thinkin' out loud.

NEW WEBSITE FORMAT

Tue, 2 Jan 2018 09:29:53 CST

Dear moderator/controller or whomever the genius is that made the howler of a decision to alter the format on the BHO, for Gods sake what were you thinking ? It is truly awful. Absolutely shocking. Admit you made a titanic howler and return our website to it's former glory. I used this site DAILY but now.... what is the point ?

PLEASE change it back.

Complement to the "Like" button

Sun, 31 Dec 2017 12:46:26 CST

Would be great to have some button up there next to the Like button that conveyed the sentiment - "What the heck are you talkin' 'bout son?" Some people write the craziest things, me included. Maybe it could be a green button with WTF? on it or maybe just a big Might be fun.

Obituary Forum

Thu, 28 Dec 2017 11:28:32 CST

How about a forum for Obituaries? Most folks are going to die, why not have a place to talk about it.

Tef format attachments

Thu, 28 Dec 2017 10:21:18 CST

With the popularity of the tef file format, can BHO include that in the formats for attachments?

Welcome/New Member Section

Sun, 24 Dec 2017 17:33:08 CST

A lot of new members aren't sure where to introduce themselves, and since they probably wouldn't be the one to suggest an idea, I will. A Welcome/New Member introduction section may be a good way to get new members' feet wet and get to know them.

In case you missed this important date in banjo history....

Sun, 24 Dec 2017 06:27:06 CST

12/25/1999 - Monica Schlange, wife of Eric Schlange, gives him his first banjo for Christmas. The low-end convertible "Tempo" was originally her father's. This gift led to the launch of the Banjo Hangout two weeks later. Thanks, Eric (and the moderators, and all of those of you who post on the HO) for all you do. Merry Christmas

Sound File Formats

Tue, 12 Dec 2017 09:37:50 CST

Any way BHO can offer more than just mp3 format for uploading sound files? I use WMA for most since that is most friendly for Windows Media Player.

Blog category for the practice group

Wed, 6 Dec 2017 08:51:43 CST

(I'm pretty sure there's already a forum entry for this somewhere, but I can't find it)

The Practice Group has sort of exploded all over the blogs: In the last month, there are few blog entries that aren't related to the practice group.  Most of the Practice Group blog entries are about a person's specific experience with practice or lessons.

Would it make sense of there to be a "Practice" blog category?

Key options when posting Tabs

Thu, 30 Nov 2017 20:09:39 CST

In an effort to make banjo pickers look less ignorant of how real music is writtten I suggest the following: Get rid of the oddball keys.
When you post a tab and want to let others know what key your tune or song is in every single enharmonic key is available. One would think that more options would be better, but I would say that it's not. Every time I look at these it makes me vomit a little bit. All of the sharp keys can be taken out except for F# as all of the other sharp keys are better served by their flat key enharmonic, and besides, no one uses these because they would include too many sharps, no one wants to use double sharp notes. Sometimes C# and C flat are used but it is so rare that D flat and B natural are obvious choices. Minor keys would be linked to the relative major of the key in question. Thanks for your consideration.

*this may also help improve our collective musical literacy

Classified ads should have dates.

Thu, 30 Nov 2017 13:13:35 CST

All classified ads - new, old, completed or expired should have dates on them.

Displaying old ads without this vital piece of information skews the market - these days, when it's recovering from lows a few years ago, it is artificially depressing prices.

I'm currently trying to sell a banjo through the site for the first time - it's a model that sells new for $2400, and I am asking $2000, which seems to be a perfectly reasonable asking price given that the instrument is in excellent shape and has just been professionally set up.

Unfortunately, if a comparison shopper goes to Google and googles this banjo model and "used", the top results are old classified ads for this banjo model on this site, in as-new shape, displayed with no context as to when they were posted. One is for $1700, one is for $1550.
These prices were reasonable back when this model sold for $1800, but are very low now that the banjo's list price has increased by over 30%.

In comparison, now my fairly-priced banjo seems totally overpriced, making it more likely that I'm either not going to be able to sell it at all, or will have to sell it for a lower price than I should based on the prices it was selling for several years ago.

I am grateful for the existence of this site and for the classified section, but these old ads without the context of when they were current do a disservice for both the people selling banjos everywhere, both on and off the site, and for this site itself, which depends on a percentage of sale revenue, and therefore benefits from a strong market.

The future of this site?

Sat, 25 Nov 2017 09:37:07 CST

I've enjoyed the community on this website but i'm afraid it's too complicated to use easily. I'm afraid the community side is going to stagnate if it's not simplified. The group member numbers should much, much higher than they are: There are so many banjo players out there and low group numbers seem to be evidence that they're not coming here. Anyway, sorry to be a pessimist, best wishes for the site. I'll continue to try and use it. It would be great if you had a simple phone app. I know my website hits are mostly from mobile users. I can relate, simple and entertaining is always the first choice. I don't find myself staying on this site very long now.

Subscription to the classifieds

Tue, 21 Nov 2017 07:56:09 CST

It would be nice to be able to subscribe to the classified section. That way when a new ad appears, we could get a notification. Set it up for each section. Accessories, services, Banjos, banjo parts, etc. that way people could subscribe to whatever the section they want or all of them if you want.

Kinda like we subscribe to a topic now!

banjo reviews

Mon, 20 Nov 2017 10:25:12 CST

Hello

Not a big problem, but i'm a little confused with the (new ?) banjo reviews. When you look at them, no problem to find a brand, but why is - in the title - the model of the instrument no more defined ? Ok, just as example, looking for OME- Lots of reviews, but which model ?? Or Pisgah ?? ASO. Would be helpful if the 'old' titles naming what a model of banjo is meant reappeared.

Thanks for your job, BTW, it' precious

P.

Books

Fri, 17 Nov 2017 00:07:22 CST

Hi

Can anyone tell me if there are books offered for sale on this website. They are not listed under Marketplace nor media nor any other location that I can find.

Many thanks

Online version of newsletter?

Mon, 13 Nov 2017 11:46:32 CST

Eric, I don't like receiving emails from any site, so I don't subscribe to your newsletter. But that doesn't mean I don't want to read it.

Have you ever considered publishing an online version of your monthly newsletter as a permanent and ongoing archive? If not, why not? The few times I received it, it seemed interesting. Why not let the world see those newsletters (if not the world, then only BHO membership once logged in)?

Plenty of sites do something similar, send out the email blast but then have an online version that's accessible to all, not hidden as your newsletters are. It would also extend BHO's reach once google indexed the newsletters.

If it's not something you think would be beneficial, that's cool, I don't need to read them. Is it all about the ad revenue?

Just something to consider.

BHO emails

Sun, 12 Nov 2017 10:49:26 CST

Lately, every time I go to read my email, there are dozens of emails from the BHO forum. It takes me longer to delete them than it takes to read the important stuff. Is there a way to stop them? I am tired of dealing with it.

Ability to upload alternate video file types

Sat, 11 Nov 2017 18:28:23 CST

Instead of having to link to a youtube video, or in addition to it - and with the common use of smartphones creating mp4 files, is there any interest in making mp4s uploadable to banjo hangout? Or are they already?

The New BH Format

Tue, 31 Oct 2017 21:10:08 CST

Are others as unhappy with the new Banjo Hangout (BH) format as I am? I enjoyed BH for many years. I have purchased and sold many banjos and banjo-related items. For several years I suffered from serious BAS but now, and fortunately, I have all the banjos I need (save a second long neck that Carl Arcand is making for me). I consider myself fortunate to have acquired the banjos I have during the years prior to the change in the Hangout's format. Quite frankly, I find myself spending less time browsing on BH and more time playing and that's a good thing. But finding items, when I need to, is more complicated on the new format. Just today, for example, I posted a wonderful Deering 6 string and thought it would appear at the top of the listings, as it would have in the pre-new format days. Nope. Not there. I did eventually find it using the advanced search option. I'll stop there but for me, I long for the old BH format days.

Not sure it can be done but

Sat, 14 Oct 2017 04:17:14 CST

One thing I think would be really nice to have on the site. When you click the more button on the landing page and go to post that is down in the list, when you go back to the landing page the list would stay open so you don't have to click on the more button again and find where you left off. Not sure this is a bother to other people or not.

Back Button When Browsing Classifieds

Wed, 11 Oct 2017 17:46:12 CST

There is already a thread on this but it hasn't been addressed in a couple of weeks so I thought I'd revisit it. When browsing the classifieds and you go back, it takes you to the top of the first page of ads, not where you left off. Not a big deal for the first page or so but it gets really old when you're many pages into the listings...

a return to the top button

would be handy,

Newest Posts feed....

Thu, 5 Oct 2017 11:58:13 CST

In the past, Off Topic posts didn't appear in the "Newest Posts" feed. I'm not sure if this was an intentional change with the new website or not. But figured I'd bring it to attention.

Member tagging in plain text quick replies is now enabled

Thu, 28 Sep 2017 13:14:50 CST

I just took member tagging live on the forums, but only when composing a quick reply in plain text mode.

Learn more about member tagging by clicking little blue (?) in the quick reply box that invites you to tag others.

It's a little buggy (yet still functional) on mobile devices. We'll keep tightening it up.

Let me know what you think!

Potential New Catergory "Banjo Practice"

Wed, 27 Sep 2017 22:46:38 CST

Hello Eric and all Moderators,

I have a suggestion for the blog entries, that is to add a new category.

Currently the categories are"

Banjo Building/Banjo Setup Lessons

Banjo Lessons

Commentary/Stories

Interviews

News

Other

Reviews

I would suggest another category "Banjo Practice". I know there is a lot of overlap between lessons and practising (yes Australian spelling!) but some people don't have teachers and are learning from online, and I would suggest that there is value in discussion practising as a separate entity to actually attending lessons. Though I know that my teacher is breaking down pieces for me to see what are clever and interesting ways of learning to teach myself pieces. The discussion of practising - which is the majority of what I do with my banjo playing could be of use, so members can look through other people's practising habits, rituals, and routines. I can learn a lot from reading about other people's practising, because different mindsets and ideas inspire me to do different things with my very modest practising, that I am doing as a newbie! Practising can be such an exciting thing to be doing, though there are ebbs and flows with it, so talking about that, and reading how other members are practising would interest me quite a lot.

Cheers,
Kate

Let's play tag! Check out the new member tagging feature.

Tue, 26 Sep 2017 17:06:13 CST

We just took a new (beta) feature live, and I'd love for everyone to give it a try!

You can now tag members in blog comments. You accomplish this by typing @ followed by at least 3 characters. This performs a search of active members by username and brings up a list you can pick from. Choose the member you want to tag, finish and submit your post, and you're all set!

Right now, if you tag a member they will receive an email alert with a link to view your comment. In the future we will give members a choice of how they want to receive alerts, but for now this was the simplest setup.

Of course, our plan is to roll this out to the forums and other areas of the site ASAP. I know member tagging will be a real game changer in the forums, since it will let members reference other members easily, making their own post more informative while bringing others into the conversation.

Give it a try by commenting on this blog entry. Let me know what you think!

Hats off to Eric

Fri, 22 Sep 2017 16:26:21 CST

I confess I didn't like the look of the new site.  To be truthful, I still don't, but I'm warming up to it.  The old site had that nice curve along the left-hand side, and the buttons and other links were larger and more colourful, and all in all it just seemed nicer, but that's probably because I'm an old fuddy-duddy (well, I am Canadian) who doesn't react well to change.

But, I can appreciate the improved functionality, and the new style is slowly growing on me.  I can also appreciate the tremendous effort which went into these improvements, and the continuing work to iron out the wrinkles and fix bugs, etc.  Eric is most responsive to us users and our comments, and I think he deserves kudos from all of us for the results.

Can you find a color change option?

Fri, 22 Sep 2017 05:19:40 CST

This brown theme is seriously unpleasant. If there was a way to at least toggle the color, that would be great. Thanks.

Posting live links

Tue, 19 Sep 2017 14:02:34 CST

Could you include in your FAQ's how to post a live link in a forum? It seems like only half of the posters know how to do this and for some reason it drives me crazy!  (image)

But if there is no guidance out there, maybe they have a good excuse.

Any chance for the chat room to return?

Fri, 15 Sep 2017 16:04:25 CST

Just like the topic says.  The old chat room saw much more traffic than the current Google chat room.  Now that the site's been upgraded, any chance the old chat room will return?

New Banjo Hangout

Fri, 15 Sep 2017 14:02:56 CST

i was surprised by the new site. It might take a little to get used to, thanks for all you do! Keep up the great work! Charles

Links no longer change color when viewed

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 16:36:12 CST

I frequently visit this website multiple times a day - - The new site does not provide an indication of which links I have previously viewed....   I find that a very nice feature and would appreciate it if the feature were restored.    Thanks   JJ

Banjo Hangout 5.0 Launch Feedback

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 12:20:34 CST

We've launched the redesigned Banjo Hangout and worked out the major kinks... but there are bound to be some bugs here and there.

If you come across an issue that needs fixing, please post it below so we can get it taken care of.

IMPORTANT: whenever possible, try to include the URL of the page you're referencing, as well as the browser and operating system you are using. (And if you have a screenshot you can share, that's a big plus as well.) This information makes our work much easier!

Why the Redesign?
Lots of folks have asked this. There are multiple reasons for this, but here are the big ones:

  1. Mobile users. More than half of our traffic comes from people on smartphones, and the old site, while usable on a phone, wasn't great. The new design gives smartphone users a much better experience.
  2. New feature capabilities: we have a lot of new features we'll be adding like real-time messaging between members and enhanced/simplified uploading. These sorts of features require a more modern "codebase", and that's what the new site has.
  3. A reshuffling of content: as the site has evolved, certain features have seen a lot of use, and others have seen very little. It was time to reorganize things to make the most important features the easiest to find and use.

Thanks everyone for your patience and feedback as we fine-tune BHO 5.0!

Browser "Back" button use on Classifieds

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 12:08:13 CST

After clicking on and looking at an item in the BHO Classifieds, when I hit the "Back" button, it returns me to the very beginning of the Classifieds, NOT where i was last looking at something....not a big deal when you're on , say, Page 1 of "Banjo Parts", but a PIA when you're on Page 4 and it takes you back to Page 1 !

That's about the only complaint I've got with the new site (but, I'll admit, the old site did the same thing!)

More button

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 09:28:45 CST

When scrolling through the latest posts (which I do first thing in the morning most days), it would be nice if the "more" button displayed more than 5 more posts. It used to display something like 20 posts. With only 5 additional posts, which get added at the bottom of the screen so I need to scroll down to see them, I feel like a mouse pushing the reward lever. Would it be possible to display 20-25 posts, and have it automatically scroll so the next batch of new posts start at the top of the screen?

New look

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 08:52:35 CST

I have no problem with the new website's appearance. here's what I did: I just pretended that I was coming here for the first time. I don't care what it used to look like. It looks like this now. Everything works so far.

The new look: For the nostalgic members

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 22:53:17 CST

Here you can watch the "good old" BanjoHangOut and how it has developed through the years: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://banjohangout.org/

New look

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 19:01:53 CST

gotta say. I've been here since 2003. Back then it was on a desktop computer.  Now on an iPhone.

I absolutely love the new look

Protecting names from search engines

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 18:18:09 CST

It's nice to be able to put a name to a profile and username, but does that name have to be shown on posts and replies?

It would be nice if names were visible only on the profile, and only to whom the user allows to know the name, like friends only or all members only.

Banjo Hangout, new look

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 10:42:16 CST

what do you people think of it, I think it looks nice but way to much scrolling now with my mouse. what ever happened to the saying if it ain't broke don't fix it.
