Gobbledygook in Quoted Replies

Wed, 14 Mar 2018 05:07:06 CST

Code keeps showing up in some quoted replies, and seems to be happening more frequently for me.

Is the cause on my end or the site’s end of the interweb?

Add Musescore to Tablature Editors/Viewers page.

Wed, 14 Mar 2018 00:21:50 CST

Could you add information about Musescore to the Tablature Editors/Viewers Page?

Musescore is a program for Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems that creates full featured tabs and notation scores. It runs natively on each platform with no need for emulation programs, such as required to run Tabledit on Linux. There is also a Musescore Player for Android (free) and Musescore Songbook for iOS (paid), these mobile apps play scores/tabs in the apps native format.

Thanks button

Wed, 7 Mar 2018 13:59:06 CST

One of the model train forums I frequent has a "Thanks" button to thank a poster for his contribution. It lists you as a "thanker" under the post. It is nice to be able to do this. Regards, Dave L.

Subscribe to a Tab or Tag someone in the comments

Wed, 28 Feb 2018 17:56:30 CST

I would like to be able to subscribe to the tabs I create. Many times people ask questions in the comment area of the tabs and, since I don't really search my own tabs for comments after they fall down the list of new tabs, it may take me months to respond. Well, that's not gonna help out anybody. If I could subscribe to it, I will be notified when someone comments and respond in a polite period of time, and the commentator could be notified too. If I could tag someone, that would help as well. Thanks

locked account ?

Mon, 26 Feb 2018 11:59:39 CST

When an "account has been locked by a moderator," is the rationale posted somewhere?  I'd like to see the reason(s)... or is it there and I just can't find it?   ...does "report post" play a role?

Problems receiving union member shirt

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 07:48:24 CST

I had recently joined as a union member about a month ago and have not received my shirt. Tried to email Eric and never heard anything back. Anyone else have this issue.? It's a bit aggravating.

Looking up members

Sat, 17 Feb 2018 13:15:45 CST

No doubt this has been addressed before, but (a) how does one look up a member, and (b) what was wrong with the old way...was it just too easy and logical?

How to easily create a review

Thu, 15 Feb 2018 06:01:56 CST

I can't find an easy way to review a teacher. Can you point me to the location or tab? Would it be possible to add a button on the home page called "reviews" and the have a submit a review embedded on that page?

Boy, I sure wish...

Wed, 14 Feb 2018 14:35:47 CST

...that that big green menu field didn't pop up every time I send my mouse pointer up to the browser's back button. Just sayin'...

Website minor problems

Wed, 7 Feb 2018 08:56:11 CST

Hi Eric,

You might want to look at this, screen dump attached:

Manage your friend list:

  • the last entry shown as friend #999 (EOF marker?) > new entries now all are 999
  • when I switch the feed to OFF and save the updates the ON/OFF setting updates are disregarded and show up blank/unedited on subsequent list updates
  • not a biggie but it would be nice to have an UP button to go back to the top of the list

When looking at someone's ABOUT profile their age is listed but since the website revamp there isn't a box to enter your birth date

When entering your bio you can hit the enter key to insert a line feed but once you've posted your bio all line feeds are stripped and the whole thing becomes one long sentence - not a biggie but less easy to read if it's a long story. I seem to remember from forever ago that Windows and Mac machine handle line feeds differently but can't remember how...

Attachements (when entering a new post):

In the selection box Photo/video/MP3/PDF the PHOTO option is highlited (as the default?) but still needs to be clicked before that option becomes available

My machine: Windows 7 Pro

Thanks for having done, and still are doing, all this hard work - I do like the new format!

This week in banjo history

Sat, 3 Feb 2018 15:48:47 CST

I've only just noticed the 'This week in banjo history' feature on the homepage of the Hangout. Cool.

Great addition (if it's new) or nice discovery (if it's been there a while and I just haven't seen it). (image)

Tef Attachments

Mon, 29 Jan 2018 09:43:12 CST

Any way BHO can enable tef files to be attached like pdf files?

beginner's area?

Thu, 25 Jan 2018 06:21:55 CST

I'm sure much of the beginner's falls into the "Playing Advice" sections, but It'd be nice to have a general Beginner's area for a place to introductions, and technique questions that would be common to multiple styles (ie hammer ons, slides, pull offs, (I'm sure there are more?))

Good on ya,

Strapline advertising

Sun, 21 Jan 2018 12:17:51 CST

Is there a way to turn this permanent, unsolicited, intrusive irritation off?

I have no interest in a 10" electric banjo ukelele and that fact won't change no matter how in-your-face and persistent the seller's promotion. The nature of BHO is that information and resource on companys and items for sale is here and we can easily search for it if and when we choose to.

If the motive is financial gain from advertising revenue the swings and roundabouts of that strategy is likely to backfire badly. Because there's zero chance that I will continue to pay for the 'privilege' of being a passive dupe for online advertising. And I very much doubt that I'm the only one.

Events/Concerts/Recordings Forum

Thu, 18 Jan 2018 21:08:04 CST

I've been trying to think of a way to add more interest and participation from banjo players, pros, bands and their fans to the Banjo Hangout website, increasing traffic and hopefully be beneficial to Eric and the site in general.  One idea that has been floating around in my head would be introducing an "Concerts/Events/Recordings Forum" (or, simply "Promotion Forum"), where bluegrass bands and banjo players alike could post their events (jam sessions, for instance), concerts and recordings, along with ticket info and links to promoter sites, to band websites, and digital album/song downloading sites, in a brand new dedicated forum instead of in "Banjo Related" or "All other Music Styles" forums.  It would give the banjo community and fans a central place to go to view this information.  And I think a dedicated forum would attract more focused attention and participation from banjo pros who may decide to join Banjo Hangout for the first time, and those already on the site would be more prone to get out the calendar and post their concerts and gigs, recordings etc.. on a dedicated forum.

I know you all have talked about a Recordings Forum before, and this would broaden that interest with the events and gigs.  In fact with the recordings, a lot of music sells online now, through digital sales, and a musician could provide a link to Amazon, CD Baby, etc.. instead of viewing this forum as a place to sell physical product, which would have to involve getting addresses and exchanging monies.  This new forum wouldn't be for selling directly from Banjo Hangout.  These links could promote digital sales for the musicians and keep them attracted to Banjo Hangout and hopefully bring good to the site.

The alternative has been to supply this info in BHO blogs - but I think this new forum idea would draw fans easier, especially if they don't know the member name to search for when looking for blogs hopefully containing some event information.

I think this all would be helpful bringing new, steady traffic to Eric's site, especially if you advertise this new forum somehow on the home page, attracting new comers to join and post their itinerary.

Ad Viewership

Thu, 11 Jan 2018 12:33:52 CST

Would it be helpful if a seller could call-up a list of repeat viewers of his item. It seems many items take some time to sell and it might speed things up if the seller could approach repeated viewers (whose accumulated number may represent more than a passing interest in the item) through BHO itself. Any resulting sale of the item would still remain via BHO, ensuring its sales fee. What privacy concerns, if any, would members who repeatedly look at an item cite as an argument against the collection of this new data? Just thinkin' out loud.

Tue, 2 Jan 2018 09:29:53 CST

Dear moderator/controller or whomever the genius is that made the howler of a decision to alter the format on the BHO, for Gods sake what were you thinking ? It is truly awful. Absolutely shocking. Admit you made a titanic howler and return our website to it's former glory. I used this site DAILY but now.... what is the point ?

PLEASE change it back.

Complement to the "Like" button

Sun, 31 Dec 2017 12:46:26 CST

Would be great to have some button up there next to the Like button that conveyed the sentiment - "What the heck are you talkin' 'bout son?" Some people write the craziest things, me included. Maybe it could be a green button with WTF? on it or maybe just a big Might be fun.

Obituary Forum

Thu, 28 Dec 2017 11:28:32 CST

How about a forum for Obituaries? Most folks are going to die, why not have a place to talk about it.

Tef format attachments

Thu, 28 Dec 2017 10:21:18 CST

With the popularity of the tef file format, can BHO include that in the formats for attachments?

Welcome/New Member Section

Sun, 24 Dec 2017 17:33:08 CST

A lot of new members aren't sure where to introduce themselves, and since they probably wouldn't be the one to suggest an idea, I will. A Welcome/New Member introduction section may be a good way to get new members' feet wet and get to know them.

In case you missed this important date in banjo history....

Sun, 24 Dec 2017 06:27:06 CST

12/25/1999 - Monica Schlange, wife of Eric Schlange, gives him his first banjo for Christmas. The low-end convertible "Tempo" was originally her father's. This gift led to the launch of the Banjo Hangout two weeks later. Thanks, Eric (and the moderators, and all of those of you who post on the HO) for all you do. Merry Christmas

Sound File Formats

Tue, 12 Dec 2017 09:37:50 CST

Any way BHO can offer more than just mp3 format for uploading sound files? I use WMA for most since that is most friendly for Windows Media Player.

Classified ads should have dates.

Thu, 30 Nov 2017 13:13:35 CST

All classified ads - new, old, completed or expired should have dates on them.

Displaying old ads without this vital piece of information skews the market - these days, when it's recovering from lows a few years ago, it is artificially depressing prices.

I'm currently trying to sell a banjo through the site for the first time - it's a model that sells new for $2400, and I am asking $2000, which seems to be a perfectly reasonable asking price given that the instrument is in excellent shape and has just been professionally set up.

Unfortunately, if a comparison shopper goes to Google and googles this banjo model and "used", the top results are old classified ads for this banjo model on this site, in as-new shape, displayed with no context as to when they were posted. One is for $1700, one is for $1550.
These prices were reasonable back when this model sold for $1800, but are very low now that the banjo's list price has increased by over 30%.

In comparison, now my fairly-priced banjo seems totally overpriced, making it more likely that I'm either not going to be able to sell it at all, or will have to sell it for a lower price than I should based on the prices it was selling for several years ago.

I am grateful for the existence of this site and for the classified section, but these old ads without the context of when they were current do a disservice for both the people selling banjos everywhere, both on and off the site, and for this site itself, which depends on a percentage of sale revenue, and therefore benefits from a strong market.

Ability to upload alternate video file types

Sat, 11 Nov 2017 18:28:23 CST

Instead of having to link to a youtube video, or in addition to it - and with the common use of smartphones creating mp4 files, is there any interest in making mp4s uploadable to banjo hangout? Or are they already?

Banjo Hangout 5.0 Launch Feedback

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 12:20:34 CST

We've launched the redesigned Banjo Hangout and worked out the major kinks... but there are bound to be some bugs here and there.

If you come across an issue that needs fixing, please post it below so we can get it taken care of.

IMPORTANT: whenever possible, try to include the URL of the page you're referencing, as well as the browser and operating system you are using. (And if you have a screenshot you can share, that's a big plus as well.) This information makes our work much easier!

Why the Redesign?
Lots of folks have asked this. There are multiple reasons for this, but here are the big ones:

  1. Mobile users. More than half of our traffic comes from people on smartphones, and the old site, while usable on a phone, wasn't great. The new design gives smartphone users a much better experience.
  2. New feature capabilities: we have a lot of new features we'll be adding like real-time messaging between members and enhanced/simplified uploading. These sorts of features require a more modern "codebase", and that's what the new site has.
  3. A reshuffling of content: as the site has evolved, certain features have seen a lot of use, and others have seen very little. It was time to reorganize things to make the most important features the easiest to find and use.

Thanks everyone for your patience and feedback as we fine-tune BHO 5.0!
