A 19-year-old Vacaville man who faces murder and attempted murder charges agreed Friday to postpone scheduling a jury trial until at least February. Raul Gutierrez-Ayar, who authorities have identified as a gang member, was 16 when authorities suspect he opened fire on a group at Dixon's Northwest Park, near North Lincoln Street and West H Street, one night in April 2015.

Corey Lewis Johnson, 31, was arrested Wednesday in Dixon by the FBI-Solano County Violent Crime Task Force and the Dixon Police Department. According to the federal court filing, Johnson had worked for the company for three years as a financial services representative through Nov. 28, 2017.

SCOE trustees set to vote on ELITE charter

An action sure to draw a large crowd, the Solano County Office of Education governing board will vote Wednesday to grant or deny the proposed ELITE Public Schools Countywide Charter School petition submitted by Ramona Bishop, the former superintendent of Vallejo City Unified who was fired from her post last March. With county staff urging trustees to deny the petition, the board's decision will come about one month after a contentious December board meeting that saw several dozen speakers address trustees in support of and opposition to the petition, which would establish a charter school first in Vallejo, then other charters in Fairfield and Vacaville in the coming months and years.




Vacaville Elks helps 22 families during the holidays

The Vacaville Elks Lodge closed out 2017 with its 21st consecutive year of providing Christmas gifts and food for families in need in the communities served by the Vacaville Lodge. This Christmas, the program known as "Bob's Kids" provided 22 families from Fairfield, Vacaville and Dixon - more than 90 family members - with a food gift card for the whole family and merchandise gift cards for individual family members.

However, the latest one includes an 81-square-mile quarantine area around the Tolenas area discovery site in Fairfield on Aug. 23. The discovery came about three weeks after the county had ended its enhanced trapping program for the previous discovery of a single fly in October 2016 in Vacaville.

Dixon fireworks permit lottery opens Jan. 1

A total of six permits to sell fireworks will be issued in 2018 to nonprofit organizations in Dixon in the following categories: • "Last Chance" : One permit available. Permit applications and the filing fee of $25 will be accepted until Feb. 1 at Dixon City Hall, 600 East A St. The lottery, if required, will be held at 2 p.m. March 14 in the Fire Department Training Room, 205 Ford Way.




Dixon woman named Solano County 4-H's top leader

Audrey Ritchey was honored as the Solano County 4-H Program's "Leader of the Year" for her "outstanding teaching skills and leadership" at a recent ceremony held in her hometown of Dixon. The award is presented to the person "who exemplifies what a good 4-H leader is," and Ritchey was specifically praised for her ability "to draw out the best in 4-H members through her patience, project preparedness, and dependability," according to a statement released by the program.




Holiday hires help push Solano unemployment below 4 percent

A 14.3 percent jump in jobs in clothing retail outlets helped Solano County's unemployment rate drop below 4 percent for the first time in more than 16 years, the state Employment Development Department reported. The unemployment rate dipped to 3.9 percent in November, the lowest it has been since May of 2001, which had the same rate.
