Summit County Council appointed three new members to various boards and commissions and reappointed two others at the April 16 regular meeting. Council appointed Louise Gissendaner to the METRO Regional Transit Authority Board of Trustees, replacing Scott Meyer.

The One Book One School program at Bataan Memo- rial Primary brought Erie Shores K-9 Academy and the Humane Society of Ottawa County to school. The event was inspired by Bataan Primary's school-wide book, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.

Legislation working through Summit County Council would allow a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping ex-offenders re-enter society take over a distressed county building. During Council's April 9 meeting, Jason Dodson, chief of staff for County Executive Ilene Shapiro, said the legislation would authorize a lease of the property, located at 180 E. South St. in Akron, with the objective of ultimately selling it.

Keri Hoffman, 35, was arrested for raping one of her students. Hoffman is a teacher at Clinton Middle School in Clinton, Ohio, and set up contact with a 15-year-old student through Facebook messenger, admitting she had sex with the boy numerous times since March 30, 2018.

Summit County Council's Personnel Committee agreed March 26 to place a resolution on next week's agenda that would authorize the county's purchase of various types of insurance for $910,106 through Wichert Insurance. Tim Crawford, who recently resigned from Council to become the new deputy director of law, insurance and risk management, presented the matter before Council.

On Saturday, March 17 the City of Port Clinton Recreation Department along with the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce held the Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. The Easter Bunny arrived by fire truck escort and greeted the hundreds of kids eager to race across the lawn to fill their bags, baskets or buckets with as many of the colorful, candy-filled eggs and whimsical rubber duckies that peppered the park.
