Some web sites displayed with text only, no graphics

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 06:59:51 -0800

I recently performed some updates on my computer, and now some web pages are displayed in "text only mode", without their normal graphics. I had a potential malware issue, and was directed to make some changes - mostly to Java and tweaks to Firefox (see below).

A little research into the "text mode only" issue showed that it might be java script related. One of the updates I made was from Java 7 to Java 8. But the installation went flawlessly, and I even made sure to reboot, as directed. And additional reboots haven't fixed the problem either.

Also, I had reset default Firefox browsing settings, and also cleared the Firefox cache.

I had seen this "text only" problem only once before, and had assumed it was a problem on the web site's side - for the offending site, when I went back to it after several weeks/months, the problem had gone away. But now, it seems to happen on several sites (reddit, youtube, to name a few), and with no discernible pattern.

Renting my house - what am I forgetting?

Thu, 22 Mar 2012 08:53:25 -0800

I will be renting my house to a friend shortly (June). What resources (web sites, books, etc.) would you recommend on such various issues as; drawing up a lease, potential problems & how to avoid them, things I might be forgetting, etc. I will be contacting my insurance agent to make sure I am completely covered in that regard. But I am nervous about what I might forget/overlook.

Basic laptop recommendations

Thu, 13 Oct 2011 09:02:00 -0800

I need a latop - and more. I am living/working in MD, but come back to NY on the occasional weekend to take care of the house. I have a desktop PC there, and don't want to move it, so having a laptop would be good. So... what do I plan to use it for? Nothing very "intensive"; web surf, email, watch youtube videos, play a few flash games, etc. So I was thinking of something as cheap as possible - Gateway and Asus have models around $300. Any recommendations? Models to avoid? Should I go to Best Buy or order from Newegg? Max out the RAM? Most come with 2-3GB. Any other things I need to consider?

And what about after? Any recommendations for anti-virus or anti-malware? FYI, I will be downloading Firefox. I already have MailWasher for the desktop, and will probably use it on the laptop as well.

Also, I am a WiFi neophyte, so any recommendations on books/websites to learn from would be appreciated. I've found a few articles about "safe computing", but realize there is a LOT I don't know. Thanks!

Alternative to selling?

Thu, 30 Jun 2011 08:22:20 -0800

I am a homeowner who may be out of a job soon. Instead of selling my house, is there any assistance/help/aid I can apply for to help me in this time of crisis?

Whose dog is this?

Sun, 10 Apr 2011 06:45:21 -0800

What to do with a found dog? Pet owners please help. This is the second time (different dog each time) this has happened to me. This morning, I saw a leashed siberian husky wandering around the neighborhood. After seeing him around a couple neighbor's houses, he started sniffing around my yard. So I went outside, and approached him. He seemed friendly enough. He had a collar, and half a nylon leash (looked to be cut), but no tags. He wasn't shaking, scared. Didn't seemed malnourished. But I got him some water, which he immediately lapped up. I sat with him for a few minutes, hoping to see an owner. No luck. Eventually, he just walked off.

I was a little torn about what to do. Should I have let him in, and waited to see if someone walks around the neighborhood, looking for him? Should I have held him & called animal control? Maybe he has an ID chip.

I did a quick google search for lost pets, but didn't find anything definitive. Craigslist has a Community> Lost & Found area. Would it help posting there? There seemed to be a lot of posts, but does that really help?

I'm on Long Island if that helps. Thanks!

Who carries witch hazel gel?

Fri, 18 Feb 2011 12:29:58 -0800

Looking for witch hazel gel. Help! I use witch hazel gel as an aftershave. It's great but... my supplier no longer sells it. An extensive search resulted in something close, but it's been discontinued. I've heard that Tesco (in the UK) sells something similar, but I'm in the US. Any ideas?

Electric toothbrush disposal

Thu, 18 Nov 2010 07:30:10 -0800

Best way to dispose of an electric toothbrush? I have a >7 year old Oral B electric toothbrush that just gave up the ghost. What is the best way to dispose of it? It seems to be sealed, but with a little effort, I'm sure I can take out battery, and bring it to a recycling center. But what about the rest of it? Seems like a waste to toss it.

I'm a little skeptical of some "electronic recycling" centers (and how to separate the good from the bad?). I found TDR Recycling in California. The link that pointed me to them said they would accept electronic toothbrushes mailed to them, but their web site was not as explicit. I will be contacting them. (BTW, I'm on Long Island, NY, so local would be nice.)

I went to the Oral B web site, and they don't seem to have anything about "return for recycling".

(A replacement has been purchased and is on the way. So please, no "fix it yourself" answers. Thanks!)

How to move a lot of books?

Thu, 03 Jun 2010 09:17:08 -0800

Cheapest/best way to move books a long distance? My Dad is moving from a large house to a medium condo. He has a bunch of book, and will be taking some (2-3 bookcases) with him. My brother (also in FL) will take some, and I offered to take the remainder off his hands - this could be 100-200 books. Maybe more. But I'm in NY and he is in FL. What's the cheapest way to get them here?

My thoughts:
1) Fly down, and rent a car to drive them back
2) Mail them at "book rate"
3) Moving service

Am I missing anything? FWIW, there are no antiques, or books that need special attention.

Thanks!

What water feature?

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 08:35:11 -0800

Help me make a "water feature" - for visual/aural esthetics, as well as attractive to birds and other wild life. I am a homeowner, with a small backyard. It's fairly deep shade. I've got a birdbath, and a few bird feeders. I've got some room for a water feature, but not sure quite what I want. So, let me try to explain...

The area I'm thinking of putting it in is a rather wide bed; say 6-8 feet, in the corner of my yard (there are plants there, but nothing I can't move). I think a small pond is overkill, but I'm not dead set against it. But nothing with fish. I've see some nice little fountain type things in home stores & online, but they can be expensive, and I'm cheap.

I'd consider building something (I've seen some nice little homemade dealies on HGTV), but I'm: A) not handy, and 2) not artistic. But I'm willing to try, given a particularly snazzy idea, and halfway decent directions or foolproofitude.

All input - pictures, books, web sites, etc. - is welcome. Thanks!!

Video editing for noobs

Tue, 09 Feb 2010 09:02:21 -0800

Best video editing software for a novice? I saw this question, but I think I might need something more. I have a Kodak DX (something) camera, and it has a video mode, which is OK for what I want - taking video of martial art stuff, and posting on youtube. But I want to do more - edit them down, maybe add audio, effects, etc. I'm a little unsure exactly what I want to do. I'll probably find out as I start. So feel free to ask if something is not clear.

Also, I want to be able to work with different formats as needed. For example, a friend gave me a DVD that he took, but the format was something I hadn't seen before.

So, what is a good package to use? From some brief reading, I thought about Adobe Premiere, but have not seen very favorable reviews. All recommendations are welcome, as is general information I might have overlooked ("You do realize, you'll need a new Fractus Bi-modulating Polymerating card, of course!"). Thanks!
