ANIMECELL

The purpose of animecell is to review Anime which is geared more towards an adult audience. Don't get the wrong idea, when I use the word adult I'm referring to storyline and not as in that special section at the back of the video store.

Cowboy Bebop

2012-01-25T04:30:14.912-08:00

(image) Plot: Futuristic bounty hunters chasing and capturing bad guys...

Review: As you can see I have really gone all out when describing the plot, but I can tell you this... Cowboy Bebop is one hell off an anime. For an anime which was originally run in 1998 it was so much ahead of its time, rhythm and style with a touch of jazz, which I doubt had ever been seen before. Add to the mix a storyline that was not only entertaining but gripping which revolved around the characters.

This anime was so big that for many years after its release, anime in general was compared to it, its was the benchmark of its time. Now its considered a classic which every anime collector should have in their possession. 10 years after watching it, characters like Faye Valentine and Spike Spiegel are still as fresh as ever.

Paprika

2012-01-25T04:37:04.037-08:00

(image) Plot: Set either now or in a not to distant future, a pharmaceutical company develops a device that allows a person to enter and interact with the dreams of others. The main purpose of this device is that it acts as a type of mind therapy for psychiatrists to analyse and treat their patients. Yet as the device progresses further in its development problems start to occur. It is left to our heroine Paprika the alter ego of Dr Atsuko Chiba to find out what exactly is going wrong.

Review: I give credit to Sony Studios for producing a beautiful anime with an very interesting concept, yet it still falls short in delivering. For me it is something that if watched once I have no inclining of watching again, the plot is sooooo obvious that its boring. Full of eye candy but lacks taste, the only joy in this anime is Paprika herself... hmmm but that joy goes away after 5 minutes. Film critics though have given this film a high reviews but I can not.

Baccano!

2012-01-25T04:40:03.525-08:00

(image) Plot: Its hard to define the exact plot-line in Baccano!, as this anime in essence is made up of multiple stories each overlapping the other while focusing on certain characters much of which is set in the 1930's. Yet there is a common thread and thats the "elixir of life" successfully created through alchemy it been placed in to two wine bottles. Thus the story focuses on those who actively seek these bottles, and those who encounter it, without really knowing its true value, which in turn leads to some enjoyable watching.

Review: Entertaining, fun, dynamic, thats what makes "Baccano!" unique. Although it has a non-liner storyline, it by no means lessens the viewing experience. In actual fact it gives the anime a bit of bite, the advantage being that I could easily watch episodes back to back without getting bored. Make no mistake Baccano is a gem and I have seen some who have written that its one of the best animes to come out of the noughties. That may be true but give it a few years and you'll forget what the story was actually all about. Its like Pulp Fiction in that you know it was good but you just cant remember it. The only gripe I have with the anime is that its too damn short, with only 16 episodes.

Ghost in the Shell SAC and 2nd GIG

2012-01-25T04:45:05.680-08:00

Plot: Set in the future when cyborgs are the norm and people can jack in to each other whenever they like, its not completely inconceivable that there is a fair amount of cyber terrorism about. Now hacking computers systems is one thing but when theres the possibility of hacking a persons brain in order to commit crimes you need a special task force to investigate. This is where "Section 9" comes in, a small yet highly specialized force backed by the Japanese government. The story mainly revolves around the exploits of Motoko Kusanagi(AKA the Major) a cyborg who is the spearhead of the Section 9 task force.Review: Anyone who is interested in anime must watch "Ghost in the Shell", whether it be the original movie or the TV series. Both the series and movies were all ahead of their time, especially in the animation side.Major Kusanagi is a legend in the world of anime and after watching Ghost in the Shell SAC(Stand Alone Complex) its clear to see why, you could classify her as the archetypical heroine. The plots in the series are by no means straight forward and they will have you guessing and theorizing throughout. Ghost in the shell SAC contains 26 episodes and Ghost in the shell SAC 2nd GIG contains another 26, so all in all theres 52 excellent episodes to get your teeth sunk into.Genre: Sci-fi, action, psychological, thriller, Crime.Episodes: 52 (both seasons combined)Year: 2002-2005DVD: YesContains: Violence, may contain bad languague.Who can watch it: Not for kids.Licencors:(UK) http://animecentral.com/series/, (UK,US) http://www.manga.co.uk/titles/ghost-in-the-shell-sac-season-1More Reviews at:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346314/http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/ghost-in-the-shell-s.a.c./dvd-1 frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm-uk.amazon.co.uk/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=FFFFFF&IS2=1&nou=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=solo2design-21&o=2&p=8&l=as1&m=amazon&f=ifr&md=0M5A6TN3AXP2JHJBWT02&asins=B000BMUVKQ" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">While writing this post, found this intro the I had never seen before.[...]

Tokyo Godfathers

2012-01-25T04:50:29.142-08:00

(image) Plot: Three homeless friends; a down and out bum, a runaway girl and a transvestite find an abandoned baby in a heap of garbage. After some consideration its decided that they will take care of it while at the same time searching for the child's parents. As the search progresses, they find themselves caught up in one situation after another which leads to some very entertaining and humorous watching.

Review: Not all anime has to be Sci-fi or fantasy with the protagonist having special powers or wielding a big gun and with a name like Tokyo Godfathers you may be forgiven in thinking it's some sort of mafia anime. Tokyo Godfathers shows that there is anime out there that do have a down to earth quality to them. In fact I think that Tokyo Godfathers could easily of been made into a successful live action film. I will repeat that its the rich story that makes this anime so entertaining, its light hearted but at times serious. Its a definite buy if you want a change of pace.

He manges to escape death and decides to help young girl who he tries to rescue from her abusive circumstances.

(image) Review: Might be a bit disturbing to begin with but its an excellent anime. Has a superhero feel to it but is not portrayed in a too over the top way.

This is a hard one to review as I can tell many people might not enjoy the animation or the story line, its far fetched but has its serious side. Its not for everyone but I still enjoyed it.

Black Lagoon

2012-01-25T05:12:06.836-08:00

Plot: Business man Rokuro Okajima(Rock) gets kidnapped by pirates on what he presumes is a normal business trip. Thinking that his company will pay the ransom he is optimistic but later it turns out that he has been abandoned to cover up some dirty business dealings. He decides to join the crew of the Black Lagoon, the pirates who kidnapped him. Pirates being Pirates theres plenty of killing and gun fights mostly involving Revy and extremely ill-tempered female protagonist. The Black Lagoon series mainly focuses on the exploits of this band of criminals and the world of danger they live in.Review: If I can remember the name of this anime off the top of my head then it must have been good although it has been a few years since I watched it. Revy is unlike any female protagonist out there. As a character, visually she appears as if she had been a rip off of Lara Croft but her personality is unlike any female protagonist I've seen, a foul mouthed sadist, who is in serious need of an anger managemen. She is not the only memorable character in the series, in actually fact you'll end up forgetting the story way before you forget some of the characters in Black Lagoon.Genre: Action, drama, crimeEpisodes: 24Year: 2006DVD: YesContains: Violence, Bad languageWho can watch it: Not for kids, Don't let grandma watch it.Licensor's Links:(UK) http://www.mvm-films.com/detailed_anime/black_lagoon_1.htm(US) http://www.funimation.com/ , http://www.geneonuniversal.jp/More Reviews at:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0962826/http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/black-lagoon/dvd-1Opening Video: frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm-uk.amazon.co.uk/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=FFFFFF&IS2=1&nou=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=solo2design-21&o=2&p=8&l=as1&m=amazon&f=ifr&md=0M5A6TN3AXP2JHJBWT02&asins=B002BC9Z2Y" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">[...]

Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (Ryūsei no Gemini)

2012-01-25T05:17:06.974-08:00

Plot: Set perhaps a few years after the original "Darker than Black" we find that Hei has been separated from Yin, at the same time his personality has changed, he's colder has a fowl temper and drinks more that he eats. The other protagonist in the story is a 13 year old girl named Suou. Her twin brother's a contractor, its a secret that she hides from her friends, as he himself is hidden by their father to keep him safe from the Government. Things start to go wrong for Suou when a friend turns into a contractor, then her home is attacked, her father murdered and her brother goes missing. As the story progresses she meets up with Hei which will lead her to discovering the truth about her past. Meanwhile Hei himself is searching for the missing Yin.

(image) Review: The sequel to darker than black was something that I was looking forward too. Yet after watching it I found it lacking, mainly due to the route the story takes. What started out as a good story with so much potential fizzled out in the end, it leaves you with a sad "what the hell!" feeling. It's not a bad anime, visuals are great voice actors and sound effects are fine but the story just brings it down. What would of made an even better sequel is the time between this anime and the previous. Fans of darker than black will probably buy it when it becomes available(maybe in a few years), if your not a big fan however and the choice is up to you, but I would suggest you spend your money elsewhere.

Subbed vs Dubbed Anime

2012-01-25T04:08:19.632-08:00

So you feel like watching an anime, you decide to a purchase the DVD and when you get your hands on it, you eagerly sit down to watch it. The menu appears on the screen and then you press play, it begins. As you watch it you may begin to feel that something isn't right, what could it be? The animation and visuals are great so thats not the problem, so it could only be the sound, no its the characters, their voices don't seem right. You know that its been dubbed but its only an animation it should not make that much of a difference, maybe the voice actor is trying too hard? As you continue to watch, it begins to become irritating, you cant watch this anime anymore so you switch it off and find something else to do.Most people would never consider watching an anime in its native language of Japanese with English subtitles on but the option is always there to do so. Considering that many non-English foreign films are not dubbed and do have subtitles its not unheard of for people to watch a movie in this way. Some say it is hard to read the subtitles and watch at the same time. I can agree to a point, on the other hand the pace at which the Japanese people speak it is very similar to English so it is not that hard to keep up with Subtitles. Yet there are some benefits to watching the native Japanese soundtrack in its language rather than the English dubbed sound track:First off the sound quality is usually better, believe it or not the chances are that the Japanese soundtrack will probably be clearer and of a higher quality than the English version.Secondly, allot of consideration is taken in Japan for choosing the correct voices for the characters. In fact one can compare it to Pixar or Disney finding the best actors to voice their animated films, so that they make sure that the right actor fits the right character. You may find it hard in an English dub to match the voice with the character, one voice may sound like the next unless they try to over emphasis certain characteristics like a hillbilly accent or fake English accent. A common practice in English dubs is to have a voice actor do the voices for more than one character. Thirdly, watch a DVD and turn on the subtitles while watching the dubbed version. You'll be surprised at how much is added/subtracted from the dialogue. The reason is the translation from Japanese to English,  you will probably find it takes longer to say certain things in Japanese than it would be to say it in English and visa versa. What the dubbers do is try and fill in the gaps either by changing the original dialogue or by adding extra, so when a characters mouth is moving at least some sound will come out. Sometimes they end up leaving dialogue out. All these changes however can pretty much ruin the whole experience, and sometimes leaves a person wondering what the hell is going on.Lastly one of the benefits of watching anime in it native Japanese is that you probably start to pick up some of the language if you watch enough of it.While not all dubs are terrible I am of the opinion that there are more bad ones out there than there are good ones. If you consider a movie or anime as a piece of art(a complete experience), then someone comes along and starts messing with it, it will have an effect on the whole experience.Watching the subbed version of an anime or any foreign film, may not come easy to begin with but after getting used to it there are few that will return to watching the dubbed version.[...]

Texhnolyze

2012-01-25T05:20:42.450-08:00

Plot: Set in the future in what appears to be some underground city on its last legs. The main character is a prized fighter by the name of "Ichise", due to some circumstances has lost an arm and a leg for raising a hand against, to what we could assume is the owner of a fight club. As he staggers around the city he eventually collapses in-front of a staircase, there he is discovered by a doctor who specialises in robotic prosthetics called "Texhnolyze". She thus replaces his leg and arm with latest texhnolyze which she has been developing, during the final stages of the treatment he escapes from her lab. The story proceeds from there, as the city seem spiral to its destruction.
Personal View: You have the whole sci-fi thing going on which is not very sci-fi, if not for the texhnolyze. Then there's a Mafia aspect to the story which plays a major part. Stone faced Ichise with a personality like a robot has my award for the worst personality in anime, although saying that as the story progresses he personality does seem to come out a tiny bit. Then there's girl Ran who can see into the future, she is drawn to Ichise and follows him around here and there like a stalker.
While the story in its entirety is good, I must admit at times it feels a bit tedious and repetitive.

Death Note

2012-01-25T05:27:17.550-08:00

(image) Plot: A shinigami(Japanese Death God) is finding the afterlife a bit boring, he seeks entertainment and thus drops a Death Note(like a book of the dead) into the human world to see if it would spice things up a bit. In the book he has placed instructions on how to use it, which he states that anybody whose name is written into the book shall die. The book ends up in the hands of "Light Yagami" an intelligent self righteous student who comes across as a smart-ass with an extremely egotistical personality. Light despises thugs and criminals, and becomes a vigilante with the help of the Death Note. The police know that criminals are dieing left right and centre and although they have no idea who and how these murders are committed, their duty is to find the perpetrator and so the cat and mouse game begins.

Personal View: Perhaps considered the most influential anime of its time. The protagonist is unlikable and egotisticle, he is not hero material and if you had to put him on the scales with good and evil, form the viewers point of view he would defiantly lean towards evil. For a lead character this probably goes against 99.9% of the animes out there. This is probably why it is so appealing to watch. It is a true thriller if ever there was one, which is why it worthy of all its acquired praise. So if your interested in a dark story line then I suggest you get it.

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka

2012-01-25T05:33:35.019-08:00

(image) Plot: Ex-Delinquent gang leader tries to clean up his act by becoming the greatest teacher alive(hence the name Great Teacher Onizuka or GTO) while at the same time trying to lose his virginity. The anime is about the relationships he creates with the students and how he deals with discipline and other problems in such an unorthodox way that you'll be falling over with laughter.

Review: The animation was originally run from 1999 to 2000 so by today standards the look of it is not that crisp. However, GTO could be consider a masterpiece(a classic) and once you get to know Onizuka there is no other character like him, he is unforgettable. Its unfortunate that the animation hasn't been licensed in the UK, although the manga has, I don't know why but this could easily be a big seller over here. It is a available to order in from the US but remember you need a player that can read the NTSC format. Well if you do get to watch it I can pretty much bet that you'll find it enjoyable.

Darker than Black

2012-01-25T05:41:16.675-08:00

(image) Plot: Imagine some supernatural or unexplainable event occured, causing some individuals to loose there personality and identities and in exchange where given superhuman powers. Then in order to use their powers they have to fulfil a contract like eating cigarettes or sniffing shoes, hence the name given to them "Contractors". To further complicate the story after this supernatural event took place all the stars in the sky had vanished, and in their place were new ones symbolising all the contractors on earth and when one of these stars fell it meant that a contractor had just died.

The downsides to being a contractor is that although they have these special powers they can be easily influenced and thus many contractors are employed by governments, military and some even work as assassins.

The lead character is called "Hei" but unlike most contractors Hei personality is still intact, Hei is on a missions to find his sister and the story unfolds from there.

Personal View: The animation is very well done, after reading the Plot the story might sound bizarre but it works. I must admit I did enjoy the animation, and by the looks of how many countries have licensed this animation, others must have too. I think this anime is a solid buy and I can find little fault with it, I would say though that although is was really good, its not one of my all time favourites(it might be yours though)

2012-01-25T05:49:30.685-08:00

In this city is our very attractive Goth heroine "Re-l Mayer", an inspector investigating a series of murders. The main suspects being androids infected with a computer virus which seems to allow them to develops emotions.

Personal View: Such stories and setting reminded me of movies like AEon Flux(2005), Ultraviolet and Metropolis, none of which I enjoyed watching, so I found it very hard to get is into this anime to begin with. However after a few episodes though it grew on me and by the end of the series I had wish there was more.

Welcome to the NHK

2012-01-25T05:58:37.597-08:00

The Plot: The story is basically about a guy who has lost the plot and is a conspiracy theory nut believing that some organisation is out to get him by using a public broadcaster as a front. As he sufferers from heavy social withdrawal he confines himself in his apartment and lives of the money his mother sends him. His life starts to change after he meets a girl claiming that she can cure him.

The Psychological accept of this anime is interesting and it explores why the main character ended up the way he did and how he's tries to get out of that dark hole. While I believe it has serious message to tell by no means is this anime dry or boring, it has plenty of funny moments. Its different from the your average anime so don't expect nudity, violence or anything over the top. I must admit though I did enjoy it and I consider it one of my all time favorites.

Samurai Champloo

2012-01-25T06:04:25.249-08:00

(image) Plot: The story takes place in Japan at the end of the Edo period and centers around three characters, two men which are like oil and water(both in their style, personality and the way they fight) and the third a teenage girl who hires both men to help find a samurai that smells of sunflowers. This anime revolves around the journey to find that man, while at the same time each character has to confront their past.

If there is any anime that will be called a classic in the future this will be it. It just has that same feel which made Cowboy Bebop a classic, well I suppose its not surprising as both anime share the same director. I mean from the start of the intro theme you know that this is going to be something special.

The animation, story, music and fight scenes are all spectacular. I have one gripe and that's with the baseball episode, completely random and makes no sense with regards to the story.

Genre: Period/Comedy/Drama/Action
Episodes: 26
Year: 2004
DVD: Yes
Contains: Violence
Who can watch it: Not really for young children due to some of the scenes.

Gantz

2012-01-25T06:02:34.637-08:00

(image) Plot: Two high school boys try and save a homeless man from being run-over by a subway train, although they succeed the two idiots end up dying in process. Yet it is not the end as both wake up in an almost empty apartment room.
In this room there other people who have seemingly also just died in some way or other add to that there's this big black sphere which tells them if they want to live then they need to-do what it says. The sphere has a person inside it called Gantz, who starts sending the recently resurrected souls on crazy missions mostly to die.

Whats sticks out about this anime in my mind, is not only its graphical nature with plenty of blood and gore but it gets you thinking, theorizing and wandering what will happen next. The only down side is form my point of view is the protagonist and his whole unfrequented love thing, irritated the hell out of me.

Anime end's but story continues on, with the manga.
