A great finish and I can easily understand the lure of the pool. I am on Instagram, you can find me as Kaisievic.

Oh! I really like that!! No, not to light at all. I think it is a great contrast but not in your face. I don't think it is too much for a boy quilt at all. I did that design on a quilt that was gifted to a young man and he absolutely loved it! http://www.quiltparadigm.blogspot.com/2015/12/giant-blue-star-quilt-finish.html As for you being able to do it - you can! It is really a very forgiving design (I know it doesn't look like it but trust me it is!). I had many wobbles and many times that the lines in mine were not consistent but once it is finished - you can't see any of that!

I just had a thought, you could do square spirals in those 4 patches. . . that would look good too! :)

I think this variegated blue may work? Still too light? Really hard to see in my added photo. The paradox design is very, very cool and she did a great job of sharing how to do it. Do you think it might be too much for boy quilt? Not to mention that I may not be that talented yet. LOL

Here's a link to the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STLmwyMwc7E. I think this might show triangles but you can do it in squares and it looks just as cool :)

I was also thinking a variegated thread would look awesome in that black and the 4 patches as well... Can't wait to see what you do and congratulations on your new machine! How exciting!!

Judy,
Thank you so much for your great advice. Will definitely try a color the jewel tones...duh (pounding head with fist), not sure why it had to be either black or white. I'd love a link to the good video!!! Thank you so much.

I have done a good amount of quilting on black but have never used white. . . I have however used high contrasting thread and it looks fabulous! What if you used a thread that kind of matches one of the jewel tones in the third border on the black? You get contrast, but not quite so stark. . . As for the four patches, what about crosshatching or even the paradox design? If you need a link to a video of how to do it or what it looks like, let me know - I can send you a good one :)

Happy New Year! I definitely feel your pain! I set a deadline to have a project finished and (try) not start anything else until I'm done. Two years ago my quilting resolution was to complete many of my UFOs and I stuck with it. I also have a calendar and LOVE to write in it....write in your too! When I finish a project I reward myself with some special fabric or a new book. I actually had a good year of finishes...check out my blog. Good Luck! You should take advantage of your nice sewing studio.

Lin, do you have a pic of your quilt I could see? I just ordered the blue fabric, can you tell me which fabric you chose? I'm up for any help or ideas. Thanks.

I recently finished a blue and white king size quilt. For the white, I used a beautiful toile (white ground with pale blue print). The blue was a dark rich blue. Turned out beautiful. Something for you to consider. I also love the appliqué border idea, or some lovely trapunto in the quilting if you decided on solid white. What ever you decide, it will be beautiful.

Thank you soooooooooo much for your comment. Helps me a ton. Ahhhh, I could do some sort of applique, but no flowers, so any ideas? I added a third choice after I changed them to white, too stark. Any better?

Well both designs are great. However anytime I see a plain white border I think APPLIQUE! Of course not everyone likes applique even when its simple. If it were my design I'd make the second one, change the corners to solid white, and let the quilting make up for the lack of color in the borders...feathers or crosshatching. Looking forward to seeing the end product.
