Movie review: ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ is an assault on the senses

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 18:43:48 +0000

Call the prosecutor! I want to charge the people behind the deafening man vs. machine actioner “Pacific Rim: Uprising” with assault and battery — on my senses. That includes my nose, which was offended by the odious odor emanating from this inferior sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s original. In the hands of director and co-writer Stephen S. DeKnight — and three more scribes — the insipid “Uprising” does nothing but pander to its Asian [...]

Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn gets to be an American villain in ‘Ready Player One’

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 18:14:58 +0000

The thick Australian accent is a bit disconcerting when Ben Mendelsohn phones in from Los Angeles to talk about his role in Steven Spielberg’s new film “Ready Player One.” Mendelsohn had used that accent throughout his early career as a leading man, often playing romantic parts, in Australia. But after scoring a memorable bad guy role in the Australian film “Animal Kingdom,” he crossed over to Hollywood, getting work in small arthouse films (“The Place [...]

Movie review: Itzhak Perlman’s magical musical life gets short shrift

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 18:11:40 +0000

There’s more to making a documentary than simply turning on the camera and following your subject around hoping his — or her — charisma will carry you through. It’s a rule that eludes documentarian Alison Chernick in “Itzhak,” her meandering, shapeless profile of violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman. His infectious personality does carry the film — for a while. But the mind starts to wander when repetition — we see him receiving awards from [...]

Movie review: Deutch blossoms in wilted ‘Flower’

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 18:07:31 +0000

Her parents met on the set of “Some Kind of Wonderful,” but Zoey Deutch is about as far from the world of John Hughes as you can get in playing a morally corrupt teen in the weed-infested “Flower.” Her Erica, a high school senior with a lucrative scheme of extorting everyone from the pizza-delivery guy to her shantytown’s sheriff by freely offering a sexual act followed by blackmail, knows no bounds. There’s nothing she won’t say or do to get her [...]

The Farr Side: In time of sorrow, love of music has new meaning

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 16:36:06 +0000

I lost my mother over the weekend. That’s definitely not a sentence I ever wanted to write. It’s killing me to know that I am and the situation is very real. My heart is broken.Over the course of the next few days, I’m certain I’ll reflect on many things about my mom. I loved her like no other. She was my rock and, in her final years, I was hers. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. That’s because I knew there wasn’t anything she [...]

Movie review: Manipulative ‘Midnight Sun’ goes for tears rather than reality

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 07:01:00 +0000

This teen love, disease of the week tearjerker unfolds in the style of a Nicholas Sparks novel: High school girl has rare disease that keeps her indoors during the day; high school boy meets her at night (when she can go out), and falls for her, and she for him; though she intends to tell him about her problem, she keeps putting it off; things go wrong.Yeah, it sure sounds Sparksian, but the prolific author has no connection. “Midnight Sun” is based on the 2006 Japanese film [...]

Movie review: With 'Unsane,' Soderbergh continues his welcome return

Wed, 21 Mar 2018 15:33:06 +0000

About five years ago, Steven Soderbergh made the surprising announcement that he was done directing feature films. Now, this guy had been an absolute lion in the business, on movies both large and small. A career that began with "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" also included "Out of Sight," "Erin Brockovich," "Ocean’s Eleven" (and Twelve and Thirteen), "Magic Mike," "The Girlfriend Experience," and many more. But he’d had enough of that, he said, and it was time to concentrate on [...]

Stay Tuned: ‘Alex, Inc.’ showcases the talented Zach Braff

Tue, 20 Mar 2018 15:52:40 +0000

It’s hard not to like actor Zach Braff, particularly when he’s playing an idealistic dreamer as he is on ABC’s new show “Alex, Inc.” Based on the podcast “StartUp,” the series is about being brave, taking risks and following your heart. Braff steers a talented cast away from what could be a sappy manifesto in this age of entrepreneurship as self-reinvention and into a solid and often funny story about the realities of not playing it safe. [...]

Book Notes: Franklin and Eleanor — and Lorena

Mon, 19 Mar 2018 21:00:57 +0000

“White Houses” By Amy Bloom. Random House, New York, February 2018. $27. 218 pages. What’s most surprising about “White Houses,” Amy Bloom’s thought-provoking novel about Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok’s three-decades-long intimate relationship, is the story itself. Two notable women — prominent, empowered, respected — become lovers in plain view of a nation. They travel together, they share living space in the White House, [...]

The Farr Side: Calum Scott is latest entry in British Invasion

Thu, 15 Mar 2018 16:34:25 +0000

America has long had an appreciation for artists from across the pond. In the 1960s, it was “The British Invasion,” when artists like The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Rolling Stones and countless others dominated the U.S. charts. These UK artists changed the landscapeIn the 1970s, Elton John, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who had major success. In the 1980s, with Duran Duran, The Police, George Michael, Culture Club, Def [...]
