How to Take Proper Care of Your Fur Coat

Sat, 12 May 2012 15:04:00 +0000

Allow your Fur coat or other garments proper space in a closet. Never keep your fur coat or other valuable coat in a plastic bag. Avoid too much use of purse straps and other shoulder straps while wearing your fur coat, and other outerwear, as this too will lead to premature wear. If your fur coat gets wet, shake it off and let it dry naturally. Using heat will cause both fur and leather to dry out. If your fur coat gets sopping wet it needs special attention by a specialist master furrier! Do have proper annual care including cleaning, conditioning, tightening of buttons, closures and lining and the mending of early tears - some will be invisible to you. Conditioning is processes that replenish essential oils essential for the longevity of your fur coat. Repair any small tears immediately. Often times delaying of repair can lead to an costly replacement of pelts. Your fur coat and other fine outerwear will supply you years of pleasurable wear when they are professionally conditioned and stored. The Benefits of a Ranch Mink Coat

Tue, 06 Sep 2011 14:46:00 +0000

Terri Gold with Sabine Anton and Andrea Warshaw Wernick.A ranch mink coat is one of the most popular styles of fur coats available while other fashionable furs include fox, rabbit and chinchilla. To be described as "ranch", the jacket's color must be extremely dark brown to very black. Many fur enthusiasts adore the numerous benefits of owning and wearing a ranch mink coat. Read on to learn more about this celebrated fur and its benefits.DurabilityDespite a sleek and lavish look, a mink coat is surprisingly durable when maintained correctly. This means taking it to a professional fur cleaner because the dry cleaning process is harmful to any type of fur. If you take proper care, a fur jacket can withstand decades of use and can even be restyled over the years to be at the forefront of fashion. The color of most mink jackets add to the resilience. Don't worry about white mink and light colors, the nature of fur and the natural of the oils it contains make them highly resistant to stains. Regardless of this, it is recommended that furs be cleaned and stored a minimum of once a year, even if it has not been worn. This is to slow the degradation process and keep it looking beautiful.Soft, Silky TouchMink is an extremely soft fur compared to others. For this reason mink coats are very desirable and, of course, touchable. The pelt of a female mink is more popular than a male's because it tends to be silkier, have a lower nap, and is smaller in size, resulting in a narrower stripe in the construction of a mink coat. On the other hand, male mink pelts tend to be less costly and due to modern breeding techniques, can be just as silky and low nap as female mink pelts. However, male mink pelts do tend to have thicker leather than female mink pelts, resulting in a slightly heavier, but warmer, mink coat. VersatilityThe versatility of a mink coat ranges from casual everyday use to formal evening wear. The warmth provided by this type of fur jacket by far exceeds the average winter jacket making it the perfect piece of clothing to wear on a daily basis during the cold winter months. If you work in a business-casual environment, this type of fur is excellent to wear with your business clothes also. Finally, a mink coat makes the perfect fashion statement for a night on the town. Formal clothing can be worn with it to dress it up during your next fun night out. If you do your research to find the best quality, whether you get a male or female mink coat, you will be happy with the outcome. The luxurious feel of a soft mink coat cannot be replaced by any other type of fur jacket. There are many benefits of owning a quality rel=nofollow ranch mink coat that bring joy and pride to fur aficionados everywhere. Mink Fur Coats - Learn the Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Or Should Not Buy Sheared

Wed, 31 Aug 2011 19:00:00 +0000

When it comes to fur coats, the undisputable best seller is Mink. It's been the underlying anchor of the fur industry around the world, and rightfully so. It's soft, beautiful, light, and durable, but most importantly, it makes you feel like a million dollars when wearing it. I recently came back from the biggest fur show in North America. This show only happens once a year and it's where the best of the best fur manufacturers go to show case their creations. This is where you go and look at what is going to be this year's fashion. You look, observe, analyze and then try to decide which ones you think you will be the best sellers. Its exciting work, but trust me it's not as easy as it sounds. This year's creations were without doubt, one of the most glamorous and beautiful that I have seen in a long time. But when I was looking at our selection of purchases for this year, I noticed an increasing pattern in our collection fur coat styles. This trendy pattern is all about "sheared fur". If you do not know what sheared fur is, well, it's pretty simple. The fur is shaved before the coat is put together. An example I often refer to; it's like going to the barbers to cut all the long hairs. All that is left is the underlying furs that are all of equal length. The underlying furs are softer, but just as warm. Of the collection of fur coats we had selected this year, eighty percent were sheared. It's not that we had planned on buying that many sheared fur coats, but this year's creations of sheared fur were so attractive, that we had to get them. The advantage of sheared over traditional fur coats is the fact that they are much, much lighter; and people like that. In addition, they do not look like a traditional coat, since it has more of a velvety feeling. On the down side, the sheared fur will not be as durable as its counterpart. And that make's sense, you are removing a layer of fur that is used mostly for protection. Although sheared furs are becoming more and more popular, we still have customers that come in and want the traditional black mink coat. They want the same fur coats Brook Shields or Madonna wears. One of the common reasons people tell me is the following; if they spent a lot of money on a fur coat, they want something they know will last them for 20 or 30 years and still be in style. And that is the beauty of mink fur, its everlasting. It's the definition of classic and elegance all in one. In addition, traditional fur coats make more of a statement. From my perspective, the jury is still out regarding which style of mink fur (sheared or not sheared) I like the best. I like the lightness of the sheared furs, but I also like the elegance of a traditional fur coat. Either are excellent choices and none is better than the other. Truthfully, I think it's a matter a personal preference. But one thing is for certain, people are still attracted to its splendor and beauty and will continue to be for generations to come. Spring 2011 Designer Fur Fashion

Tue, 26 Apr 2011 16:31:00 +0000

As designer ready-to-wear collections for the spring 2011 season hit the runways, it would seem that fur fashion is most definitely here to stay. The Autumn/Winter collections of 2010/2011 saw a fur revival like never before and many challenged its staying power outside of cold conditions but as the seasons change, the winning versatility of fur has shone through. Designers have been lining up to showcase their renewed love of fur by expressing fresh and original ways to utilise it in their latest catwalk creations with innovative styles coming in the form of shorts and skirts from high profile designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Georgio Armani and Oscar de la Renta.Coats took on lively new contours from the high sheen offerings of Rick Owens in his trademark jet black and the more lightweight variations appeared in short, tailored waist and thigh-length vests and jackets in serene neutrals from the ultra chic J. Mendel. Dennis Basso’s sultry coat stylings ranged from cut out and see-through swing jackets with sumptuous snug collars that accentuate the inner silhouette to capped sleeve capes that captured the playful nature of the a-line 60’s but oozed a contemporary feel. Master fur manipulator Fendi displayed a variety of slinky boleros and accessories were still smoothing out the competition with colourful stoles from Dries Van Noten.Helen Yarmak’s flirty designs used the attention grabbing bold primary hues of royal blue and canary yellow alongside strong shades of black and white cut in pure rock star mode while Oscar de la Renta brought a vintage feel back with a selection of opulent lines, trims, stoles and jackets. The stark whites, soothing browns and slinky blacks in off the shoulder and wide collar designs wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Hollywood glamour set of the 1950’s.Prada went all out on their spring collections shown at the end of last year with high colour and bold stripe designs in fox fur stoles. Vibrant shades of pink, blue, teal, green and an eye-catching stark orange (which is set to be one of spring’s signature colours) sit surprisingly comfortable alongside thick black stripes. These striking and instantly recognisable stoles are already a store favourite which has no doubt been helped along by a fun ad campaign, endorsements from famous fans such as renowned designer Marc Jacobs and pop sensation and fur advocate, Rihanna, who is rocking the look in her new music video “S & M".From celebrity wearers to celebrity designers, The Row is a label fronted by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Already making a stir with the level of fur used in their collections this dynamic twin duo have carved their own niche in the fashion world with their sophisticated and classy sharp tailored pieces that focussed on trims, fur hats and animal prints during New York’s fashion week, with menswear and accessories promised for future lines. With so much fur still gracing the coming season’s collections, it would seem that as spring approaches and the air heats up, our love of fur most definitely hasn’t cooled.IFTF is an independent international federation of national fur trade associations and organisations. How to Choose Your Perfect Length Mink Coat or Mink Jacket

Wed, 02 Mar 2011 02:16:00 +0000

(image)
When you decide to invest in a luxurious mink coat it may be a little daunting trying to decide what length would be best. Considering mink coats are made in every length from full length to the shortest little bolero style jacket there's a huge selection to choose from. Take the below 3 factors into consideration and you should be able to decide what is the perfect length for your mink coat.

#1 - Climate
Needless to say it probably gets quite cold where you live during the winter months. However, some of the northern areas tend to get even colder with temperatures dipping below freezing on many a night. If you live in a colder climate you may need more coat tro keep you warm. A full length mink coat is definitely going to give you more coverage and more protection from the elements than a mink jacket.

If you live in a warmer climate and it rarely even freezes, then a full length mink coat may not get much use. In that case a mink jacket or mink cape which looks great with formal wear or jeans will be more useful.

#2 - Body Type
When it comes to deciding on your perfect length mink coat then your body type may help you decide. If you have a perfect model shape then get whatever length mink coat you like. Otherwise you may want to accentuate the positives and camouflage the rest. If you have a petite upper body but a little more "junk in the trunk" then a swing style mink coat may be your perfect choice. If you're heavy on top but have great legs you may want to go with a shorter jacket style mink. Plus size ladies always look ultra glamorous in full length mink coats.

#3 - Price
A full length mink coat will cost on average anywhere from $3000 to $10,000. A lot more pelts go into making a full length coat, so of course it will cost more. If that's a little too pricey for you then consider getting a mink jacket or mink stole which will cost considerably less.

The younger generation is flocking to mink coats and mink jackets like never before. It was once considered the coat of a more mature woman, mostly due to it's larger price tag. The mink coat has now become much more affordable and loved by the youthful and hip. Also the younger generations have more fun with fur, wearing mink stoles with skinny jeans and boots or mink jackets with maxi dresses and floppy hats. The 18 to 30 year olds have truly embraced the versatility of real fur and are teaching the mature ladies a trick or two about fabulous fur fashion.

Mink Furs - How To Tell If Their Quality Is High

Wed, 18 Aug 2010 17:07:00 +0000

(image) When talking about glamour a few things come to one women's mind. One of them is definitely a quality mink coat. However, the prices of real furs keep climbing and a lot of people are critical against those who choose to buy a fur garment. If someone wishes to purchase a high quality mink coat, then they will have to be able to identify the factors and properties that define the price and quality.

Place your finger tips on the outside of the coat and run them through. Either rubbing with or against the grain, you should feel the fur's softness. You should be able to recognize two layers of fur: the longer guard hairs that rise in the surface and the short, dense underfur. If the fur feels spiky then the quality is low. The hairs of the same type must be even in terms of length and density.

Inspect the inner part of the coat. Many fur makers choose not to have the lining hemmed at the bottom so that the buyer is able to check the workmanship. You must lift the lining up and see the underside of the fur and evaluate the sewing technique and quality. If the mink is made with the 'let out' method, then you will be able to see long, thin stripes. It is very important that there is no hair caught in the seams. They should run parallel and their size dimensions must be equal. If the length and width of he stripes is not even then the quality is low.

Ask to know the origin of the mink garment. Sellers are legally bound to provide this information. Although China has made a lot of progress in fur making, there is still a long way to go until they meet the standards of North American and European furs. Of course this means that the prices will vary from country to country.

Find out the percentage of leather used to make the mink coat. Some furs have leather stripes sewn between the fur stripes. This is either for economy or to enhance the looks of the coat by making it less bulky. At any case, the more leather is used the lower the quality of the coat.

Check if there is a pelt label. You should look for North America Fur Auctions (NAFA), American Legend or SAGA. These labels are indications of superior quality and high standards. Pelts carrying those labels have been carefully inspected and selected among thousands of pelts for their high quality.

How to Choose the Right Fur Coat

Fri, 23 Jul 2010 22:19:00 +0000

Often people are in a quandry when trying to make choices between mink, chinchilla and fox fur coats. Mink and sable furs are enormously shiny, lightweight and soft. Mink gives out a rich feel, is fluffy, smooth, and goes through deep tinting process. Sable coats are extremely silky. The rareness of the fur makes it very expensive. One beautiful quality of the mink and sable fur coats is that they feel soft even when stroked against the grain.

Coats from raccoon and otter fur are deemed the thickest ones as they have many layers to them. Silver, black, light brown, dark brown, tan and grey are some of colors these furs come in. You can bet on the warmth of these coats in chilling winters.

I have found it helpful to shop online at AspenFashions.com. Aspen Fashions has an enormous selection of all types of fur coats from classic mink coats and mink jackets to luxurious shearling and sheepskin coats and they even have plus size shearling coats.

Brooke Shields Fulfills Her Little Girl Dream to Design Her Own Fur Coat

Tue, 08 Jun 2010 22:15:00 +0000

(image)

I found this fascinating quote today:

Wearing fur may be associated with something grandmotherish. Something you wear when you visit the opera, or if you are a rock star and wears it inside out. But I will advocate that both my generation and the younger generation can wear fur“, says Brooke Shields.iftfblog.com, IFTF Blog, May 2010

The comment fell as the American actress visited Kopenhagen Fur’s creative workshop, Kopenhagen Studio early in March. Here she began designing her own mink coat made of the best Danish fur skins. Brooke Shields chose to work with the short-haired, black mink.

“Brooke Shields will be proud to be an exponent of the beautiful Danish fur skins in the U.S. She thinks that Kopenhagen Fur is very unique”, says Kopenhagen Studio’s Partnership & Alliance manager Natia Linneman and adds that the star has been intrigued by the way Kopenhagen Fur is organized and how the company centrally supports disease control and quality on fur farms etc.

Fur is a little girl’s dream

“The gain for the Danish fur farmers is that well-established people are crazy about the product“, says Natia Linneman.

The visit of Brooke Shields, who at the age of 15 became famous for her leading part in the movie The Blue Lagoon, was arranged in February during New York Fashion Week, where Kopenhagen Fur, in cooperation with the design house J. Mendel, had a major event in the city. J. Mendel also helps Brooke Shields to design her coat.

“I will wear the fur garment when I follow my children to school, when I drink coffee and when I sleep“, says Brooke Shields, who calls it a little girl’s dream to be able to design her own fur garment.

How to Store a Mink Fur Coat to Insure a Lifetime of Beautiful Wear

Tue, 23 Mar 2010 19:57:00 +0000

You look forward to wearing your stylish fur coat each winter and it's no secret your coat was an expensive purchase or substantial investment. Protecting your investment by storing it somewhere safe is necessary in order to have a lifetime of wear during the cold winter season. Can you imagine wearing your fur coat on a summer night? Not! So when the sun comes out, fur coats should safely stored away just like the animals hibernate each winter.Choosing the right storage for maximum protection of your precious coat of is imperative. Stashing them away in the wrong manner can be a costly and disastrous experience. One of the best steps you will be able to take to increase the usable lifetime of your fur coat and protect its value is giving it a cool summer vacation. Store your coat correctly each summer and it will maintain that glossy, silky look for years to come.Fur coat storage starts by hanging the coat on a wide hanger in a closet where you can avoid crushing it together with other garments. This sounds simple, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to go wrong right from the start. You come home, take off your coat and your husband graciously takes it to hang in the closet. Well to most men a hanger is a hanger, even though we know better. Now you precious coat is draped over a tiny hanger that can distort the well tailored shoulders. It's no secret that hanging coats take up a lot of room in a closet. Too often fur coats are hung between other garments causing the natural fibers to become creased or bent. Just imagine what your hair would look like if it spent months compressed between two garments.Exposure to sunlight over time can damage an expensive coat beyond belief. Sunlight causes the fur to oxidize and fade. Exposed sleeves or an entire side of your coat can quickly become a faded disaster. Always hang your fur coat in a dark closet!A popular option for storing your fur jacket is moving it to a professional storage facility for the warmer months. Fur services establishments such as a local dry cleaner typically store your coat in an air-conditioned room or a cool basement. While this is a better option than home storage, it does not protect the hide from moth damage or drying. A Dried hide will eventually crack and result in excessive shedding of your fine fur coat. The best option to store a fur coat is with a fur vault. A vault with circulating air kept at 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit temperature and a fifty percent level humidity will preserve your fur coat indefinitely. Check the terms of the storage company's insurance coverage to understand how you will be compensated in the event your coat is damaged. Fur vault storage companies typically offer the nominal insurance coverage for furs in storage, but for a small fee you may want to add further coverage. In addition make sure to insure your fur for its replacement value on your homeowner's insurance policy. Please clean your fur jacket before putting it in long-term storage. Particles of dust sift down through the hairs and settle on the leather absorbing the natural oils and hastening the skin's drying and cracking. If you're storing your coat at home it is so easy to forget this simple task. Lastly never ever store your coat in a plastic bag as it will crush the fur. Care of Mink Coats

Thu, 04 Feb 2010 20:25:00 +0000

By Daniel SickafusWe recommend storing your Mink coat with a professional furrier in the Spring of each year. While it's there, have the furrier condition, clean and glaze it, regardless of how often it was worn. Keeping your mink coat at home over the Summer will reduce it's life. Both normal and cedar closets are not suitable for storage unless they are equipped with proper air circulation, constant 50oF and 50% humidity to maintain valuable moisture. Also, the smell from the use of cedar and mothballs will adhere to fur, leathers and wool, creating lasting unpleasant odors. The smell of both moth and cedar balls often adhere to Mink and other fur and creates unpleasant odors. Proper cleaning and annual conditioning will remove most odors.
