The staining begins...

The weather is FINALLY nice and I'm going to start staining my new dining table today, yay!

Here's what she looks like now...
Found on Craigslist for $300.  Solid wood and 84"!

Includes a lazy Susan...

Here's the bottom...

Love her legs!

I'm staining her DARK WALNUT

Can't wait to show you the results!

Little happy things for a dreary Monday

It's gloomy and overcast in Houston today....too cold to stain my new table...too yucky to get outside with the kiddos on their day off.  Here's a few little things that make me smile on this dreary day...Pierce sleeping in on his day offFrilly pillowsRudy lounging on frilly pillows and that's okayRudy dog She's growing into her pawsLittle puppy padsTurquoise feather wreath...girlie sassiness in a house full of testosteroneThe bottom of my new round table, still sitting in the garage.  More on that to come...Happy Martin Luther King Day everyone![...]

Shades of Gray

I have like a ZILLION other projects that are more important, but I'm stuck on re-doing my dining room.  This is the way it looks right now...This is such a BAD picture, all yellowy, but my lazy butt doesn't want to snap a new one so I pulled this from an earlier post.Everything is going away, except the dining room chairs and this...I could never get tired of my drippy chandy! So, I want to paint the room GRAY.  This is the color I'm thinking about..{Benjamin Moore}I think it will look really pretty with the white crown moulding in the room. I found my big round table!  Those of you who follow me regularly know that I've been looking for one for the last year!  I'll post a picture of it later, but I found it on Craig's List for $300.  It's 72" and solid wood and it's sitting in my garage waiting patiently for me to stain it!So, here are some fabrics I'm looking at for the chairs and possibly curtains...{from Ikea.  I'm not sure if the pattern will work for chairs, but I think it would make really cool curtains}{There's that Ikat fabric!  This one is from West Elm}{Dwell Studio at}{Gray Leather at}I would love to find a thrift store dresser to paint and use as a buffet, kind of like this one...{photo courtesy of Cococozy}I'll be posting more on the dining room as it progresses![...]

Gypsy at heart?

Yesterday I talked about my obsession with Suzani. I also love Ikat. I think maybe I was a gypsy in a former life. It's funny because my home is currently pretty tame safe traditional in style, so I'm not sure why I'm drawn to these two looks, but I'm planning on adding some Suzani and Ikat items to jazz things up a bit.Ikat is a method of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process, similar to tie-dye.  The dye is applied prior to the threads being woven to create the final fabric or design. Here are Ikat home decor items that are currently being offered by some of my favorite sources.{Ocean Ikat Prints at Neiman Marcus){Throw Pillow, Dwell Studio for Target}{Henning Sofa at Anthropologie{Sheet set at Anthropologie}{Graphic Ikat print fabric by the yard at Pottery Barn}{P. Kaufman fabric by the yard at Amazon}{Blue and Spice printed pillow at World Market}{Blue and Gray pillow at Etsy}{Rug at Neiman Marcus}[...]

Oh Suzani!

Well, in trying to live up to my NY resolution of blogging more than every 6 months (hehehe) I want to share my latest obsession...Suzani! Okay, I know, I know; this isn't anything NEW or earth shattering, but I've been known to show up late to the party (I'm also infatuated right now with turquoise!)I'll be "bringin' it" with some projects soon! So, what is SUZANI? The literal translation is "needlework", but to collectors it is more specifically the embroidery from Uzbekistan. Now if you are like me, you are wondering where in the heck is Uzbekistan?! (or maybe geography genius here is the only one!) Uzbekistan is north of Afghanistan and sandwiched in between some other "stans", namely Turkmenistan and Kazakstan (Borat fans rejoice!)Many retailers are carrying Suzani "inspired" items.  While they aren't the "real deal", they are a beautiful alternative for the rest of us!  I love the beautiful, vibrant colors and the bohemian feel.  What a way to liven up your home decor!Bohemian deliciousness!{Suzani Lily Coverlet & Sham at Acacia Lifestyle}Dress up your white dinnerware!(Table Linen Collection at World Market}I love the color combination.  I would put this on my chocolate velvet sofa!{Throw Pillow at Pier 1 Imports}Beautiful colors!{Art from Z Gallerie}A bold & sassy chair{Parker Chair at Crate & Barrel}A fun alternative to a coffee table{Footstool at Wisteria}{Fun throw at Anthropologie}{Placemats at Horchow}{Fabric from}{pair of Suzani inspired prints from Lamps Plus}Stay tuned for my feature on Suzani's little friend, Ikat!  Coming soon...[...]

Like Mother, Like Daughter

My mother is a furniture mover; no, no...not what you are thinking!

She rearranges the furniture in her house A LOT!  I always marvel at how she can make a room look brand new just by moving things around.

I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, because I'm always moving things around too.  This weekend I rearranged the family room.

The sectional used to sit square in the room and I put it on an angle.  I also took down the dark brown curtains.  I'm going to make some shades for the windows....someday!

I moved this console table in from the study.  See that dark niche with all the electronics in the background?

Here's what will go in that space soon....

My talented brother-in-law made this built-in for us.  He just has to stain it cherry to match our kitchen cabinets.

More patio progress!

My cushions came in today!  Remember the Frontgate chaise lounge chairs I found in the trash?!  I haven't repaired them yet, but couldn't resist putting the new cushions on to see how they looked!  I need a little table in between them to hold my afternoon margarita(s)!This is the bamboo dining set I bought on Craig's List for $45 and painted/stained.  I love the way the chair cushions look! This is the Frontgate teak chair I found in the trash!  It needs a little throw pillow.  I found the ceramic garden stool at Big Lots for $15.Now here's my next project....Shield your eyes! This is the settee I bought on Craig's List for $65.  I'm lovingly calling it my Holly Hobby couch.  Dontcha just LOVE that little ditzy floral print?!  Ha!  Rudy, our puppy, thinks it makes a really nice bed!My dilemma is how the heck I'm going to recover this thing!  It has a fabric back with curves behind the pillows......and across the back.Mrs. FYN does NOT sew....yet.  I have a sewing machine, but still trying to figure out how to use it.  Any ideas for how to recover this thing with no sewing? Also, should I sand and re-stain the wood finish or should I paint it?  White?[...]

My newest decorating dilemma!

I'm so excited to be participating in Amanda's Decorating Dilemmas party at Serenity Now!  This is my most favorite party because I get to post a decorating "opportunity" and get free advice from my talented blogging friends!  I've posted about my master bedroom, my patio and now my newest KITCHEN!So, here we go!Exhibit A - The "master planned community basic kitchen"It's a big space that is open to the family room.  This house was already built when we bought it so I didn't get to pick out anything.  I actually like some of the features, like the backsplash...The dark tile is a bronze color with a nice patinaAnd the granite color (although if I had it my way, I would have marble!)Don't get me wrong, I "like" my kitchen....LIKE.  But, it looks like every other kitchen in the neighborhood and I want to LOVE it.  So, my dilemma is....How do I make my kitchen "WOW" on a bird-sized budget?I've thought about removing some of the cabinet doors to create open shelving.  I would paint the inside of the cabinets.  I have a lot of pretty dishes and serveware that I could display.1.  Do you think I'm crazy?  Mr. FYN does.  "Those cabinets were an upgrade and they're solid maple!  Are you crazy?" (that's me doing my Mr. FYN impression)2.  Do you think I'm on to something?  If so, how many cabinet doors would you remove?  Both sides, left side, right side, left side and the corner cabinets?  What color would you paint the insides?  Keep in mind the wall paint color is a gray-blue.This is from the kitchen looking into the breakfast area.  We are going to have an L-shaped banquette built for the breakfast area and change out the round table for a trestle style, to seat more people (which will come in handy since we are making our formal dining room a sitting room soon!)  The dresser we are using as a "bar" will come out of the room.  I'm going to change out the blinds to bamboo or seagrass. This is the other issue.  Standing from the living room facing the kitchen this is what you see.  It's supposed to be a bar, but the family room is so small I think it would be too crowded if I put barstools here.  I've thought about building shelves in that space underneath to look like a built-in bookcase.  I've also thought about some sort of bin system built-in to hold the kids' shoes and backpacks, since we don't have a mudroom. What do you think?Oh, one other thing to consider:  in the next couple of months, we are replacing all the tile and carpet with wood plank flooring.  Yes, I'm putting wood in the kitchen!  I know, I know, I'm taking a gamble, but I love the way it looks.  Plus, we don't cook!  Ha!What else would you do in here to make this kitchen a showstopper?  Help![...]

Patio Table DONE!

I finally have something to show you from my back patio project!

The patio table is finally done!  This is the bamboo dining set I found on Craig's list for $45.  I painted the chairs and stained the table.

The glass top was found in the trash....FREE!

I had the Indian fabric and think it makes a cool runner.

I painted the chairs turquoise and after a spray paint mishap, this is the result.  I ended up going over everything with brown stain and adding some orange/bronze glaze that I mixed up with paint I had.  The color in the runner ties into the finish on the chairs.

More to come on the patio.  I'm working furiously this week so I can post more at Amanda's party!  Stay tuned...
