Praise for 'Pentaho Solutions'

Mon, 14 Sep 2009 12:31:00 +0100

Reactions to the new Pentaho book I wrote together with Roland Bouman are all very positive. I especially like the extended reviews on Amazon, but the following Tweet by Mark Dathorne really blew me away: Reading "Creating Pentaho Solutions" ... my last life changing book was "Spring in Action" ... the vibes are good for this one too!

Pentaho and Infobright deliver virtual OS BI solution

Sat, 30 May 2009 18:37:00 +0100

People still hesitating to take a peek at open source BI solutions are now served with the easiest way by far to have a complete BI solution in operation within minutes (!). Pentaho and Infobright have jointly developed a Virtual Machine that can be downloaded from the Infobright site. Setting it up is extremely easy: download the file, hook it up to your favorite VM software (it's a VMWare image but Virtualbox from Sun runs it just as well) and you have a full featured BI solution with a fast...

Interesting TDWI post

Fri, 20 Mar 2009 10:07:00 +0100

The latest post on the TDWI site by Stephen Swoyer about bulk load performance contains several paragraphs written by Jos van Dongen based on his TPC-H SF100 load experiments. Please beware that there is one misquote in the article: Steve writes that OS DB's cannot load faster than 20-30 GB/Hr. This is not an absolute number and only correct considering the hardware mentioned. You can probably load > 100GB with a bunch of fast SSD or SAS disks in Raid 0 or 10 but it's beyond our budget to...

MonetDB releases new version

Sat, 28 Feb 2009 12:03:00 +0100

It's not even on the MonetDB website, but the new February 2009 release has been uploaded to the MonetDB download area. The good news: native installers for Debian and Ubuntu added, both 32 and 64 bit. Other good news: you can run a SF100 (100 GB) TPC-H database on a regular PC. Don't expect magic though: it's still a memory optimized column store so with only 8 GB of RAM some queries take about an hour to complete. Still, considerable performance and stability improvements compared to the...
