Genesis of the Song Forgetfulness and sloppiness sometimes result in new grooves. Decided to create a song based on a ccmixter guitar line. Looking through guitar samples, unreal_dm's C_100 seemed a reasonable victim. While considering an accompaniment for C_100, pitched C_100 up to Eb to try some accompaniment in Eb and then went back to C forgetting that the guitar was pitched up 3 steps. The result was a pleasantly dark, mellow groove. C_100 was remixed with very few tweaks and changes to d'notes. In addition to pitching up the track 3 steps, we ran the track through Amplitube for more bite, twang and bit a spring reverb. Once the bass, rhodes and guitar groove was in place, drums were needed. Searching ccmixter for drums at 100-105 bpm, discovered that Rey's Gentle Joy drum loop well complemented the bass line. At this point Rey_DM was basically done. However, Rey provided a bell loop with Gentle Joy that was calling out for love and attention. Pasted in the bell loop with some minor tweaks and it added some needed color. ElRon added more color with the horn accents, starting bells and final production. All rutabagas were removed.

A Foolish Game -- Vox Harmony Adds

Sat, 07 Jun 2014 14:41:46 PDT

I just saw Hall & Oates perform on a tv broadcast of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. I've never really been into Hall & Oates even though their music was ubiquitous during my growing up. But as I watched, I was kind of blown away by their vocals -- these really tight back to back harmonies among all sorts of other great vocal things they did. So when I heard Emily's great song I thought it would be fun to sing along. I make no representation that I or we sound anything like Hall & Oates (nor would I want to). It's just interesting to see how inspiration can be a jumping off point for an idea. Great work by Snowflake & the good Admiral. This is really just like adding another piece of the band to the mix -- not really a true remix. Which makes me thinks of the E-Street Band which was also inducted the same night as Hall & Oates. I've never been a big fan of Bruce & the EStreet Band -- not that I disklike them just never bought a record or anything like that. But as I watched the presentation, I was really moved by how the band was built and worked together. That was inspiring too as that band really is all about how the sum of the parts is so much greater than any individual part. I like that too. Anyway -- there are two file formats of my pell (flac and mp3) as well as an alternate take (which could always be used for doubling or comping, or whatever). Groovy baby.

A Foolish Game

Admiral Bob rocks the blues! This little ditty is Unplugged Lounge ready but hopefully it will build and transform into something for the Omega Roots Stage with help from ya'll. I can imagine bass, drums, keys, even horns. :) The pell and scat are HERE. Sometimes I see what is going on around us and I get depressed. But like ejc mentioned earlier this week, if we can create from our darker emotions, well, we're somehow taking a better step together. There's always hope! A Foolish Game Life's a foolish game Do you ever feel the same Well maybe we could change Turn this ship the other way Feel it in the darkness We're sailing right into those jagged cliffs Yea Some say we've always been insane Hey life's a foolish game A simple equation For an enclosed system Natural world gone missin' Plus all our CO2 emissions Equals degradation Waste and shifts and mass extinctions Oh no But maybe we can change We sure can't stay the same Cuz life's a foolish, foolish game Possible solution Rewire our connection Maybe less consumption Emerging from a mind of isolation Revalue all that we've been given God don't work on commission We make up one big breathin' chain We're the quite the same Hey life's a foolish, foolish game Life's a foolish game Do you ever feel the same Well maybe we could change And turn this ship another way Take less than we've been given If we move in that direction Yea We'll find our place in this living chain We're the quite the same Yea life's a foolish, foolish game Life's a foolish game Hey life's a foolish game Life's a foolish game

I'm Not Going Away

Key: Cm The Band Javolenus: kick, funk groove drum loop 7OOP3D: LFO bass myfreemickey: snare Kyle Monroe: vocals Coruscate: hihat, claps Admiral Bob: hihat, drum loop Nickleus: kick, snare, hihat Bruce H. McCosar: crash, reverse crash Doru Malaia: power hit, reverse power hits Quarkstar: midi pattern outro & vocal hook Electronico: organ, synthesizers, Slayer bass ElRon: guitar Attributions: (1) Kyle Monroe's a cappella Move licensed under terms and conditions (2) Power hits by the late Doru Malaia Song genesis Discovered a cool four bar midi riff within Quarkstar's song April. Slightly tweaked the midi pattern and used it to drive three soft synths in sync with the beat. The next discovery was that the vocal hook in Kyle Monroe's a cappella Move fit well over Quarkstar's midi riff, so we built and recorded a song motivated by these two parts. Discovered that one part of Kyle's vocal fit well over Admiral Bob's drum loops from Cm_105-bpm. Then we discovered that using two of the Admiral's tracks with one track shifted one beat to the left worked mo' better. However, there was Latin percussion in the drum loop that sounded unhappy in the mix and there was no easy way to edit out the unwanted sounds. Layering drum samples from Nickleus, myfreemickey, Javolenus and Coruscate, we replaced all of the Admiral's kick, snare and hihat hits save one type of hihat hit that we were able to reuse. Discovered that the vocal verses and intro fit well over Javolenus' drum loop Cm124-Funky Groove. Left this drum loop intact except for pitch correcting the tonal parts of the drum hits for greater happiness in C minor. We added a second La Rock drum track during vocal verse and backbeat samples using a snare from myfreemickey and dustbin bucket hit. Discovered that 700P3D had an LFO bass sample that well carried the mid-song break with ElRon and added depth to the intro and vocal verses.

Auto Motor Sport (Automotor Mix)

This is the second version with the sample from Hans Atom. The song has received more vocoder chords and synthlines from the ARP Odyssey. I have also changed the mastering. The drum sound and the tempo are the same as in the first version. :)

After the Solstice

Wed, 12 Feb 2014 21:38:53 PDT

Being the Whiskey Barrel Signing Bastards [1] that we are, we created a song using the BillRayDrums jazzbo sample that no longer resides on CC de la Mixter. Nickleus contributed some kick drum hits. Thanks Nickleus! [1] Before completing this song this evening we attended a whiskey tasting at a local public house. The bar managers picked out their very own barrel of Knob Creek bourbon whiskey (139 proof in the barrel) at the distillery. We signed the barrel. ElRon liked the corn whiskey selected by the bar managers. My son and I preferred the Knob Creek rye whiskey offered within the whiskey flight.

Just an amazing composition from Snowflake. I was so drawn to this as soon as I heard it and pictured a Pat Benatar/Foreigner type remix but alas it just seemed gravitate in another direction. Stems will be up tomorrow. I kept the arrangement as close as possible to the original.

Path of Glass (SackJo22 & Evelyn Stettin)

Sun, 17 Nov 2013 23:20:53 PDT

I am looking for remixes to be part of a new, original theatrical production I am working on called PRAYER. With my collaborators, Evelyn Stettin and Angela Grillo, we are working on a multi-media performance that explores art as prayer through the character of Dorothy Vogel, based in part, on the famed art collector Dorothy Vogel (of "Herb and Dorothy Vogel"). This piece is quite conceptual (for the record, the Vogels favored conceptual art), and experimental -- more performance art/art songs than anything else. At the performance, most of the music will be pre-recorded, although vocals, guitar and certain percussion will be performed live. One of the many themes we hope to incorporate into the experience of PRAYER, is the idea of the collective -- the collective ego, the collective unconscious, the cosmic collective. I thought bringing ccMixter into the mix is a beautiful way to do that. PATH OF GLASS is a refrain that will be repeated three times during the course of the performance. We would love to hear what you do with it! (I am still working on a version based on Doxent's Minimal Bass which was the beat we relied on for the purpose of recording the pells and which you can hear a bit of as an additional file. If you incorporate into a remix please attribute Doxent accordingly.) We will be presenting the remixes created for this piece as an interactive element at any performances or workshops we may conduct related to this work. At this time, PRAYER is slated to be previewed in Los Angeles prior to being presented at the historic Good Shepard Chapel in Seattle, WA as part of The Garret Fisher Ensemble Guest Artist Series in February 2014. Any remixes uploaded by the end of January will be included in the playlist that we will share everywhere. I hope you will join us on this journey! . . .and I am happy to answer any questions you may have about this project. Thanks. Upload includes additional vocal stems not included in the preview mix.
