Google Earth is the perfect platform for educators who want to construct progressive learning experiences for their students.  It is a rich 21st Century resource for any subject area, full of materials and functionality.  More than a mapping tool, Google Earth is a vast collection of information where users can view layers of content or add their own.  Using its simple tool set, teachers can transform traditional instruction by designing lessons that allow an active investigation of ideas.  Students of different learning styles will be able to explore concepts in depth and develop higher-level thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and creativity.  Real life activities portrayed in a virtual globe add purpose and context to their learning.  Google Earth is the perfect application for project-based learning, cross-curricular units, or exploring global themes.

Open source material, such as those provide by Google Lit Trips and Real World Math, serve not only as resources for others but as models of inspiration.  Teachers of any subject area or grade level can design customized lessons for their students.  I hope you take time to read my Classroom 2.0: The Book chapter and consider how you can use Google Earth in your classroom.

Please feel free to add comments and suggestions below.  This is the peer review stage of the book and I welcome your feedback.

Help finding a Collaborative Mapping Tool

2010-04-06T15:02:58.102Z

I need help finding the perfect tool!

A little background on the lesson:

Our students each chose a museum, college, or government agency involved in geology and wrote a business letter.  The goal was to learn more about the geology of different regions of the United States.  Prior to writing the letters, we studied our own geologic profile of Missouri as well as the region the students were writing to on Google Maps. Students then wrote letters describing the geology of Missouri… I need help finding the perfect tool!

Students then wrote letters describing the geology of Missouri and requesting samples and other specific information.

Now that we are receiving responses, here is what I would like to do...

I'd like to have a Map online, where students can mark where they received information, maybe a sentence describing what they learned and perhaps upload photos of items received.  That way, our classes have a collaborative map of our project that they can share with each other as well as send a thank you to the senders with a link to our map.

Any suggestions on what I could use?  Google Maps doesn't seem to have this capability...once a map is saved, it can't be edited (At least as far as my limited experience could find.)

Thanks in advance!

Terri

New labeled image activity on StudyStack

2009-06-26T02:10:58.490Z

StudyStack today released a new free tool to help teachers create a web 2.0 activity for their students. The tool allows users to upload images and then label parts of the image. After labels have been added to the image, students can test how well they know where the labels belong. The studystack site will display the image with each label replaced with a target. The site will then ask the user to click a specific target.… StudyStack today released a new free tool to help teachers create a web 2.0 activity for their students. Digital World Library

Just found this resource at: http://www.wdl.org/en

It has ancient and rare manuscripts and maps from around the world. Seems to me that these could be the basis of some wonderful projects from K-12ers. Just found this resource at: http://www.wdl.org/en

Looking for a way to make a concept map with layers

2009-02-23T19:01:18.574Z

I am looking for some ideas...I want to make up Learning Progression maps for each of the benchmarks for my state standards for planning purposes, working on adding in more formative assessments and utilizing more of the resources I have available by having one working document per benchmark. The idea I am working toward is something like what is attached.

My dream map would be built in layers so that I could publish or show only the layers that I want for different purposes (like turn off the assessments to share with kids, etc) BUT, I would still have one working document where everything is in one place and easy to access and make changes to. A long time ago, I worked with some drafting programs that worked with different layers, and it was so easy! I am pretty sure it must exist and that someone in this network will be able to help me out!

Thematic Maps On line

2008-12-16T14:23:42.201Z

We have created a free applicattion on line to allow students creating thematic maps of any country in the world on GoogleMaps
www.up2maps.net.
It has been launched this december. If any of you check it and think of something to improve it that would be nice.
All we want is to create the best tool possible.
