Writing a game for nobody to play might be the height of my absurdity, but it's also probably the closes I'm going to get to playing again, the way things are going.

@Marcelo- I have not. I've never played any of the Apocalypse Engine games. I've read some examples of play and I'm not sure it's exactly my thing, I felt a certain vagueness reminiscent of Fate... but maybe it's worth a second look.

@mikkelibob- While making shit up is the thing that brought us the hobby, I do like to feel like I'm playing a cohesive game and not just sort of talking out of my ass. I also haven't fudged rolls in years. ;P

@War- Night's Black Agents is focused on vampires, is it not?

Have you tried Night's Black Agents? I feel like it hits a lot of the same notes that the old WoD does.

FWIW Dresden Accelerated (used Fate Accelerated), and in play it does end up a bit like just making shit up. But I think that has a long and proud history. Half the reason people used DM screens was the ability to fudge it. In that respect whether d20 or fudge dice, it's all just making it up as you go along. In that respect the mechanics and character sheet really are just ways to express what the character can do. And if that is all it is, then maybe Fate Accelerated is just fine.

Have you tried Urban Shadows (a PbtA game)? And I think I saw a WoD adaptation for Dungeon World or something like that.

I've had some similar thoughts about assassins lately, especially after trimming the fat on my campaign's bard class. B.J.'s solution is one I would agree with, although a campaign not focused on survival (i.e., making players spend their hard-earned money on food and lodging) would probably see cost be a minor obstacle at best.

As to their abilities, I would probably just remove Climb Walls and Remove Traps (if not others) entirely. The assassin would be more likely to disguise themselves to gain access to a place, instead of jimmying doors and windows open; the latter would be more appropriate to a second-story man (maybe requiring thieves and assassins to work together, to fill in each other's weaknesses).

The disguise ability is cool. I'm kind of surprised bards don't have the same ability.

Then again, it seems like the assassin was also supposed to be an ersatz spy.

That sounds like fantasy acid, which is also present in old school D&D.

And regarding Hamlet... Laertes told Hamlet that he had "not half and hours life" left in him, so it's still not instant.

Black Dougal got robbed.

I always assumed, given the table provided on p19 of the Player's Handbook, that this was intended as an awkward way of explaining what happens for any characters using poison in AD&D. After all, only the Assassin has a "yes" in the "Can they use Poison?" column; Clerics and Paladins get "never" and every other class gets a "?", implying to me that it's up to the referee whether other classes can use poisoned weapon rules, presumably using those provided under the Assassin class ... which "yes" can use poisoned weapons regardless.

Of course, I've always had an adolescent love for the class, after reading that they get a "roughly 50% chance to kill an opponent outright" on certain melee attacks. And these days I'm even more excited about the disguise rules ...

Sounds like a really clumsy attempt to add a cost to the benefit of sticking a one hit kill poison save onto a weapon attack.

Seems to me a much more workable and elegant solution would be to just make effective poison very hard and expensive to get. The fact throughout our murderous history every knight, knave, and man at arms wasn't slathering anything bearing a sharp edge with poison indicates it wasn't as easy to get the instant lethality an assassin would hope for.

The only literary precursor I can think of is the final innings of Hamlet, and in that case I think the only reason anybody realized that Laertes' blade was poisoned was he fessed up after both he and Hamlet had been stabbed with it.

I dunno how a random bystander would notice or recognize a poisoned blade. Unless we're dealing with cartoon fantasy poison that glows bright green and makes sizzling holes in the floor when it drips off the weapon.

Hmm... This is really interesting. I especially like the various degrees and types of failure, as opposed to just instantly obliterating everything (like the Armageddon spell in Ultima VIII).

I might have to check that out. I tried drafting a few rules-lite incarnations of WoD about five years ago, but none of them really did what I wanted them to do. I also tried coming up with a version of WoD using Fudge, but it also never quite gelled how I wanted it to gel.

I'll try to post about once a week. Last year was personally rough and I kind of lost all blog enthusiasm.

Ah, never mind. Checked it out, but am not terribly interested in 2E WHFRP. Zwiehander looks nice, but its digital price has been upped from $6.50 (still probably a good deal at $13 for a 700+ page book).

Thanks for the support on Zweihander and the Humble Bundle! I picked up the latter after Cubicle 7 made the announcement, and the former I designed and wrote.

I may have fat fingered something over at DriveThruRPG, as the print on demand option is now available for $49.99. Get it quick before someone fixes the price to its original $60...

Believe it or not, I actually hadn't heard of The Black Hack before this! Reading about it now, though, I might have to check it out.

If you're interested in rules-light cWoD-type games, you might try the free Introductory Kits that White Wolf put out for each of their lines in the late 90s. I've been considering running either Vampire or Mage straight from those booklets, particularly after growing even more impatient with hefty tomes of minutiae.

Also, good to see you posting on occasion once again! :D
