Ah! Silly me, I'd forgotten that. I heartily approve of their inclusion in the battle scene ... except for the wormies should've just tunneled into the Lonely Mountain and be done with it part. But I guess that wouldn't allow for an epic five-army battle, would it? :-)

I'm pretty sure the Arrakan worms were a reference to Gandalf talking about the nameless things he encountered gnawing the roots of the earth while he pursued the balrog in LOTR.

Good points JB. I wasn't too sure about penalizing a failed throw down. As you say, it's already going to be a tough fight. I also think that teaming up should probably negate the bonus, I hadn't thought through that one -- other than not allowing two throw downs on same foe.

I dig this a lot...I might not even penalize the failed "throw down" roll (since by definition you're singling out someone of equal or greater power and doing so without moxie bonus is going to mean a tougher fight).

Probably would drop the bonus as soon as anyone else entered the fight.

Cheers Alfons, hope you enjoy!

Hey, thanks JB! There's plenty of room in the gaming scene for more chaos (or similarly themed) goodness!

I'm increasingly thinking that booklet format is the way to go for anything I write that's more than a few pages in length. It not only "feels" old-school and fits on the gaming table nicely, it displays much better on tablets and such.

This is a great compilation. I'm actually working on a similar project (one with similar themes anyway), but you may have just beaten me to the punch with this little PDF!

Just by the way, have you seen the Warband/Space Hulk stuff Mike is doing over at Sword +1? You might want to check it out:

Yeah, my wife, bless her dearly, is supportive of my old-school gaming but does get exceedingly bored when I prattle on about it.

It's all good though ... I'm the same when it comes to shows like Property Brothers and Love It or List It. ;-)

Re: Antonio
That is indeed an interesting wizard ability name!

I've read a lot of good things about 13th Age. I may have to look into it a little more, if not to run a game at least just for the reading pleasure.

Thanks for reminding me about it!

Re: Calum M
Thanks, I thought I was on to something with my loudness analogy. I tend to think "musically" about topics as I'm a big music fan. lol

I highly doubt D&DN will get "air time" at my table when its released, very much for the reasons you cite about the playtest developments. I think I might enjoy playing it more than running it. But I'm playing in a C&C game now, and I find it satisfies my old-school playing itch pretty well.

I simply don't think D&DN goes far enough for my tastes to re-entrust the DM, so to speak. I've really become tired of "playing" the rules arbiter, as opposed to taking a more active role in the rulings and decisions at the table.

Based on the blogs and stuff I read, I gather that's a pretty common sentiment in the old-school crowd. I must admit, though, I'm fairly detached from the "Old-School Renaissance" and its various communities.

I am definitely in love with 13th Age. It is somewhat "loud" according to your definition, but then the GM is encouraged to literally run over the PCs. Quoting the book:
- When you throw a bunch of nasty undead at the party, you can always
shrug your shoulders in feigned helplessness and say, “Sorry, this
system doesn’t take monster powers into account when balancing
encounters. Roll initiative.” -

The, you cannot not like a game whose wizards have a special ability called "Vance’s Polysyllabic Verbalizations."

2014-04-13T21:56:36.515-04:00

I like the way you've described the situation as one of 'loudness', it is a good analogy to represent how I feel about it. I was following the playtest packets encouraged by the early iterations, but I have now abandoned them due to increasing complexity and loudness. Labyrinth Lord (or another retroclone) will not be getting replaced at my table by D&DNext for the foreseeable future.

I know that look you speak of and I have to agree with your observations on DnD next and I am also thinking about some old school newness!

I'd love to take a look at these, but I don't really want to create an account on another website to do so. Do you have any other options for downloading a copy?
