Hello, the story is really very scary. It shows how irrational are people: Monsanto is making profits now, but if it manages to terrestial plants, let's see what they will do with their profits. I honestly hope they cannot destroy earth.

I would like to ask three questions:

1. Is it possible that this bacteria is around in the fields? (As far as I gather from what I read, it is not.)

2. If it was released in the fields would it really kill all terrestial plants in the world? Wouldn't terrestial plants find mechanism for prottecting themselves from alcohol production?

3. What kind of action is taken against or at least to monitor Monsanto and Genetic Engeneering to protect the environment. Chances are, since they can produce one such lehtal organism for terrestial plants, they could produce others as well.

LED grow lights have a longer useful life than MH or HPS lights, as long as 15 years for some fixtures, and thus a lower “total cost of ownership.“ The total cost of ownership includes the cost to buy the light, use it, and replace expired bulbs

Hey, very nice site. I came across this on Google, and I am stoked that I did. I will definitely be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment. Thanks for sharing.

.There is the potential that you could starve yourself while eating them in a survival situation. The same goes with rabbits. They have little fat and you will need to add fat to the diet to ensure you don't die with a full belly.

This is one of the most accurate representations of where we've been, where we are, and where we will have to go as a species. You hit the nail on the head with resiliency. Where I'm from the Oak Savannah that dominated the Northern Illinois landscape has been scraped away. It absorbed up to 200 times more water during heavy rain, filtered out harmful toxins that ran towards bodies of water, held the soil in place, and provided one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Sadly there are only tracks of it left that mildly resemble what it was.

What we have learned from the little that is left is that nature is stingy when it is given something precious like water, maybe the most precious resource for life. The interconnected mass of roots that formed the prarie and savannah ecosystems was so dense that it took metal plows to finally bust through it. Now that it is gone, we have rivers where there used to be series of interconnected seasonal ponds that only filled over their banks on the wettest years and seasons (The Des Plaines River in Lake County, Illinois.) These rivers and streams owe their existence to the removal of the interconnectedness, and replacement of it with pavement and green lawns. What have we done?

The tangled mess of spider web like connections that you depicted in your image of the internet is hauntingly similar to a few examples in nature. For one, the mass of roots in prarie ecosystems. Others are mycelial mats or the root structures of fungus, and as you touched on, the human brain (more specifically neuron connections.) It seems evolution found a pretty good thing if the process has found a way of reproducing itself in different structures across species that are so vastly different. I wish blogs like this were on the front page of every newspaper or at the top of every newscast, but it's too late for that.

The importance of issues like this takes a back seat to industrial progress, urban sprawl, and in general capitalism. All we can do is inform those who would like to listen carry on with our preparations. Thank you for your insight, when I read this I felt like I was reading a note to myself! Be well.

Greg

Interesting I hope these projects work in the amazon for everyones sake, it looks 100x happier, healthier& sustainable than pig indoor pigfarm disease factories for sure. But,its a real shame many still value meat as most comes from forest destruction& the permaculture on this video isnt as effective as forest permaculture without it, IMO.

Informative and thoroughly engaging article. Thanks for sharing! Our collective insanity caused by agriculture is something I've been thinking about a lot thanks to articles like this and Toby Hemenway's great work setting context to our present plight.

Jeff, Excellent point and one I'm sure Peter would agree with. Thanks for the feedback. I'll leave it as is, though, since that's how it was published in the Permaculture Activist. If you get a chance, read Peter Bane's new book, The Permaculture Handbook, where he makes clear this distinction: http://permaculturehandbook.com/

Point taken! But I believe it should be “re-garden” this planet since it was a garden before until some irresponsible humans don’t know how to take care of it…

Didn't get much of that, but did understand the title. 3-D printing is a truly facinating area, and has the potential to be revolutionary (unlike the two thousandth social network website created). Is there any difference I wonder between concrete 3-D and what's been written about it in the Economist and other publications?

I tried Burger King's popcorn chicken--don't ask why and it will never happen again--and it was unbelievably disgusting.

I guess my question is how do they get away with labeling it "premium white meat chicken"? I don't understand that is legal?

Sorry for linking, but I mean, look at these pictures...the last one is a bright bluish white and gelatinous. NOT chicken. Any ideas what it is? I can't find the ingredients listed. Pretty sure it's deep fried scraps.

This is a really cool idea. The land around the Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua where I work is heavily affected by the clearcutting that happened here in the beginning of the 20th century. I'm curious what the potential to carry out projects like this without heavy equipment that would be inaccessible to most poor communities would be, and how effective it would be if it were carried out at a smaller scale. Thanks for sharing!

I live in Charlotte NC now and the politicans are bought by the corporate monies. Right now the legislation body over turned Governor Purdues's veto on natural gas fracking. When I fly over the state I see these factory farm warehouse dotting the land. Sad and unnecessary.

This is such a great idea! My old desert home merely had 'drainage ditches', which were nothing more than large, deep holes. This design increases water movement, thereby helping to balance the system as a whole. It's also aesthetically pleasing - a definite bonus for society.

I would recommend against posting info on this project unless you go in person and see the reality of the actual site. I have been there and its nothing like promoted. The tractor is a joke, the CEB press costs $5000+ in materials alone and you can buy a complete trailer mounted professional unit for $10k. The workshop they built out of CEB bricks is falling apart. The cord wood hut is falling to pieces. The soil and stream is getting polluted from all the old junk cars and engines laying all over like sanford and son. In the end it would be better use of every ones time to contact manufacturers of the tools being copied and convince them to make their designs open source for personal use only.

I loved the concept of local future. Seriously, if we think about our own local future and make it better by adopting permaculture principles; collectively it will affect global future and together we will be able to develop a better and sustainable tomorrow.
