What I think is important to note in this post is that yes these are long toes and no you shouldn't just hack off excess length because reasons xyz, BUT they are all works in progress and we don't accept a long toe long term as normal or healthy. Great post.

That was really interesting, thank you. Would love to hear how the horses are being kept, and how that might affect their improvement. It must be very difficult for owners - as in the first client - who are surrounded by people who still love horse shoes. Good luck with your training.

"lovely firm clean frogs" - what a quote. And it is so lovely (and sadly so rare) to see people putting horses first!

Sadly, for the Sydney/NSW mounted police at least, when they first considered going barefoot they consulted a particular individual from the Sydney area who is an enormous quack. Now they won't consider it. (At least they were able to see that his info was bogus, even if they decided it was typical of barefoot when it's not)

Mind you, never say never, and new information always comes to light!

Really pleased to see the police forces it is working for. As soon as the statistics become available from places like that - the money saved by having sound healthy horses - other places will start to adopt those practices.

Other less common signs of Cushings that my horse exhibited for two years before diagnosis are unusually heavy sweating in patches with even light exercise and, the one which almost caused me to have her destroyed, intense itching similar to that caused by sweet itch but over major parts of the body. After two years of self-mutilation, within 48 hours of starting on Prascend my girl stopped scratching and has been fine ever since - oh, and her hooves are much better, too!

As a hoofcare professional I see a lot of things. If you took the amount of barefoot horses I have been asked to place a shoe on because they were uncomfortable barefoot one could make the deduction that keeping horses barefoot is to the detriment of the horse. You and I know this is not the truth. I am also asked to shoe horses that are shod, and shod quite terribly. I re-shoe them or barefoot them, whatever they need and there is much improvement. The horses you receive that are shod and the owners are looking for new approach are primarily due to poor shoeing, not due to shoeing. Poor shoeing.

In your article you ask where one would place a nail if the hoofwall were thinned too much? The answer is somewhere else, or not nailed at all. There is more than one way to protect a hoof.

3 weeks ago my horse started "popping" up in front during the trot. We thought he was just asking to go into the canter. He would hop one stride like changing leads. Then 2 weeks ago he started picking up only one lead - no matter what cue I gave him. On the lunge line he picks up the correct lead. Then 2 days ago he starts tripping a little at the trot and by the end of a mild exercise lesson he is hanging his head to the ground. All during this lesson he has been gently asking to quit - or stop. When I go to pick his feet (I do this every day) he doesn't want to lift up his front feet. I force the issue and he allows me, but is tail swishing and mildly trying to jerk his foot out of my hand. CONCLUSION: He has very sore front feet and is going lame! We go to the vet tomorrow to confirm this. He gave me lots of signals months ago, but I did not see them as related until yesterday. He has been such a good boy - never refusing his lesson and allowing me to put him in pain with a lot of tolerance ... I hope we have caught it early enough!
