Hi there- My parents live in Napa & as an avid Virginia equestrian myself, my mom always tries to keep me UTD on West Coast equine happenings, so she just sent me the newspaper article about your trip to Abu Dhabi. How wonderful! Congrats & good luck!

This makes me laugh! I still think my arms are a couple inches longer than they were, pre-Monk (who was bent on being an ASS that day, too!) ;-)

Love you guys!

Wow Chris! This is really neat reading. I have only BLM Mustangs, and I've done NATRC and 1 AERC ride and every time I get the same response "your horse has no pulse" I find this interesting, but at the same time I'm sad MONK didn't get BC on day 1. I love reading the blog and really like GG and what you've done with MONK. Happy Holidays to all the MONK team!

Hey Chris, MONK and Onk,
No need for these regrets! He, you all, did a phenomenal thing, and I'm so very proud to call you friend. You are like nobody I've met in the "horse world" and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in the next few years. Have a lovely Thanksgiving, hope to talk with you again sometime soon. Chris,

Never feel embarrassed about chasing your dreams. MONK is a phenomenal YOUNG horse. I'd train him carefully, avoid injury, and do your best. You and your little backyard horse made it all the way to the WEG! I'd still wear that tatoo proudly, and there are other lofty goals to be had...Tevis, Old Dominion, Big Horn, Virginia City. Give me a budget and the Monkster and I'd be all over the map in 2011. Best of luck to you guys, and hoping to meet your boy sometime when he's enjoying the grass in KY! ~E.G.

You and Monk achieved your goal of being on the team for WEG. It's been an amazing journey, thank you for sharing your experiences. I look forward to seeing you and Monk at rides here in N CA. Maybe I'll need an autograph!

Great attempt.... no regrets! I am a lurker, but quietly behind you where ever you go. Monk is a lovely horse and a has a big heart. You both gave your best and made the decisions you needed too.... good on you! Just to get there was one heck of an accomplishment! I will keep reading, you keep riding!

Monk earned his spot even if there was a bit of luck (bad luck for Smitty) involved. Isn't that always a factor? Anyway, Monk outran many other horses nationwide. Best of luck to you, Lindsay and Monk, and all the rest of the US team.

Greenwood: True....

MONK was pulled on the last loop before they stopped the ride. LF lameness, very minor, but consistent. 3 hours later the vets showed up in force and checked him again and he was sound. If you saw the coarse you would wonder how any of them made it. There was just a hole with his name on it...

I have not been told that they require shoes but know that boots on turf are not the best and that shoes would of been a better choice, depending on the shoe. I know also that most don't care for boots.... but in this case they are correct.

The big big benefit of the boots is the concussion factor, which we don't have here.

Rumors... I had heard Monk did not finish the trial and was pulled. Also, I hear they are going to require shoes on all the horses for WEG. Can you share?

2010-07-24T12:32:48.870-07:00

Are you referring to the large, black bomber flies? ;-)

Not an endurance rider, but have done a few 20 plus mile rides (Ohio). Deep Woods Off helped with the worst bugs. In some ways, though, the black bombers are immune to everything. You teach the horse to let you know it's there (rather than taking matters into their own hooves), then you kill it.
For regular fly spray, the Endure has worked best for my horse THIS year, other years Ultrashield has been best.

Swat or G-Natural cream for ears and delicates.

Deep Woods Off really can help a lot.

Rooting for you guys... GO MONK!!!

Try Adams flea and tick spray, shampoo, and dip! I mixed the dip in a gallon jug, and poured it over my horse when doing a ride in KS. It kept most of the ticks off of him. Might work on the nasty fly issue.

We are in Auburn, getting ready for Tevis. They think it is hot...living in TX, this is nice this week

Chris,

Welcome to the mid-west, blood sucking horse flies are the norm I'm afraid...our gelding runs for the fence when he sees us because he WANTS spray. None of the sprays last as long as the label. Good luck with the humidity training.
