Super photos Shelley! I discovered your blog via Dave's Bird Watching Blog. The downy and red-bellied are beautiful. I too will be putting up more suet feeders as it is finally getting cooler here in northern California.

I try to put the store bought suet in the feeders the jays can get to and my "good stuff" (homemade suet) in the feeders only the clingers can negotiate. I still go through 3 times more homemade suet than the store bought stuff.

My recipe is here: http://www.thebirdersreport.com/wild-birds/feeding-wild-birds/no-melt-suet-my-secret-to-having-birds-beg-me-for-more

Looking forward to the Christmas Bird Counts!

I love your shot of the downey with his beak in the hole. They sure do love that suet in the winter and I've got three feeders up. I've got one similiar to yours that we made with and old log and they love it!

Jess - I need to put more out as well. Richard at "At the Water" (he's in my favorites) has some good recipes to make homemade suet.

Denise - I thought so too!

Hill - I bought these suet blocks from the pet supply - but I am going to try to make my own. they usually have other things in them such as seeds and/or berries.

JJ - I would love to see what a yellow belly looks like!

Deborah - I have a pair that comes everyday and I love it!

Rambling - I've been looking at the size of their black bibs and the white on their cheeks.

NC - I agree on what fun they are!

Lynne - aren't they loud?! Lol!

Jayne - thank you!

Nick - they seem to prefer that one to the wire caged ones I have.

Leedra - this feeder I have downstate - but I am going to bring up a similiar one up to the cabin. Hopefully I get the same result!

Eve - thank you!!

Christy - I bought this one. But I think you're right that this should be fairly simple to make.

Did you buy this feeder or make it yourself? It looks like a simple one to make and I am thinking of trying my hand or rather my husband's hand at some of these crafty type things. I don't know why but I have this fear of power tools. Gorgeous pics by the way.

I had to come and catch up on all your birds...I am interested in how you are recognizing individual chickadees. Mrs Redbelly must have been finding a lot of bugs in that old telephone pole. I had a brown creeper actually going to one of my suet feeders this mornings..It is very cold and very snowy her NE of Buffalo NY..

Shell, such BEAUTIFUL shots. Great imagery. Your posts are DELIGHTFUL!!!

We have yellow bellies.

Our feeder waits patiently for the chickadees to sweep in and find it. Dinner is served. :D

I have two suet feeders out. I need to hang a few more now that winter is here. I think that will be one of my jobs today.
