Translator - Everywhere That I'm Not - A Retrospective (1986)

I found this one on eBay and was really hoping that it was an unheralded new wave gem but alas I only really enjoyed one song on this lp (Everywhere That I'm Not).  It's more of an early 80's power pop album somewhat reminiscent of Mister Mister although somewhat better than that.

The Abramyan String Quartet - Mr. Mozart and Friends

I found this one at a local thrift store (on CD). It was created by a Salt Lake City string quartet.

Rhythm Heritage - The Theme From S.W.A.T.

This one was a little rough but it was cheap and I thought that it would be enjoyed by more than just myself.

The Phaetons - Three Weeks, Four Days and Fifteen Hours (45)

I found this one at a thrift store in Ohio for a quarter and took a chance (hey, it was my dime!). The B-side was near psychedelic but the A-side was much more pop. To read more about the Phaetons click here for a nice write-up.

Baja Marimba Band - For Animals Only

I can't say that I really understand the concept of this album. The songs are all animal related but the original 'hits' that inspired these songs span many genres. The Baja Marimba band was known for this sort of cheese though so you probably already know what you are getting if you frequent the thrift store record bins.

Doonesbury: A New Musical

I didn't know that they had made a musical based on this long running comic strip but here it is, compliments of my local thrift store.

My Rapidshare account has hit it's limit so old files are going to start to automatically be deleted. Better grab what you want now because I probably won't be re-uploading any old stuff! I may switch providers soon though, stay tuned!(image)

101 Strings - Broadway Cocktail Party

If you frequent thrift store record bins you have no doubt seen many albums by this 'band.'

Count Basie + - Europa Jazz (1957)

I picked this one up at the thrift store this weekend and it really is quite good. Side A is Count Basie and His Orchestra at their finest.

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

Flip Wilson - You Devil You (1968)

Pretty good mostly 'clean' humor from the late 1960's.

Perez Prado and Shorty Rogers - Voodoo Suite Plus Six All-Time Greats (1954)

Excerpt from Perez Prado's wikipedia entry:

Perez Prado (b. December 11, 1916, Cuba - d. September 14, 1989, Mexico City, Mexico) was a Cuban bandleader and composer. He is commonly referred to as the "King of the Mambo".[1]
In Mambo his orchestra was the most popular, his son, Perez Prado, Jr., continues to direct the Pérez Prado Orchestra in Mexico City to this day.

And a review of the album can be found here.

Jack's Steel Band - Songs By Cliff Calvin (1978)

This one is a really good steel band album that I picked up from eBay.

I found a bit of info about this band on the interet:

For over 30 years Jack's Steel Band has delighted visitors to Puerto Rico with a blend of traditional Calypso and Island music and Latin and American standards. This is an authentic "down island" Steel Band completely organic and unplugged. Five musicians perform on 9 steel pans, drums and percussion and create the perfect tropical ambience
which makes it very popular for beach parties and poolside barbecues.

Mr. T - Mr. T's Commandments (1984)

Here is a humdinger of a pretty horrible album...

From wikipedia:

Mr. T's Commandments is a rap EP for children, released in 1984. In it, Mr. T guides the youth of America with lessons on love and saying "no" to drug use.

Track listing

"Mr. T's Commandment" - 4:59
"Don't Talk to Strangers" - 5:12
"The Toughest Man in the World" - 3:55
"Mr. T, Mr. T (He Was Made for Love)" - 3:21
"The One and Only Mr. T" - 4:46
"No Dope No Drugs" - 4:36
"You Got to Go Through It" - 4:27

The Movie Hits - Volume 2 (1977)

There really was no way that I was going to like this thing - 'cover' versions of popular movie songs of the mid 1970's? Most of them ended up being pretty awful but I did find myself enjoying the song from Valentino.

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

The Wagonmasters - Campfire Favorites

I really thought that I would hate this record but it is actually pretty good and includes quite a few good songs (including a nice version of El Paso). I guess that these guys used to have a long-running show at Knott's Berry Farm and eventually put this album out.

Smorgasboard In Music - Swedish Folktone Pickled Twelve Ways

The album doesn't credit any of the artists but what you get here is a nice mix of Swedish folk songs. This was an ESSO giveaway in the mid 1970's. I was unable to find any information about this LP on the net (or on EBAY) so I would guess that it is quite rare.

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

Radio Symphony Orchestra - Strauss Concert

This one is a little rough but it's a nice vintage classical EP from the 1950's. If you aren't usually a classical fan you may recognize a couple of the songs from watching The Three Stooges.

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

Various Artists - Polka's Greatest Hits - 40 Million Sellers

This came from a fairly nice 2 LP set and features lots of fairly generic polkas from fairly generic bands such as The Deutschmeisters, Polka Padre, Rainbow Valley Dutchmen, Doug Dickover, and more. It's not bad but I have heard much better polkas in my time.

The Hustlers - Ski Country

I found another sealed Hustlers album at the thrift store and since I enjoyed the first one so much it was a no brainer (at fifty cents) for me. This one is entirely related to skiing, a pasttime in which I have absolutely no interest, so I can't say that it was as good as the first one but I can see how ski freaks would have been all over this one back in the day.

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

This one wasn't really an old-time radio show but rather a nice collection of historic dramatic adaptations for use in school classrooms. Our local thrift store had a bunch of these but I only picked up this one because the others were rather scratched. This album features Benjamin Franklin and Abraham Lincoln.

Link (56 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

99 Men In Brass - Play Marches of John Philip Souza And Others

This one is a little scratchy but it's actually a fairly enjoyable listen which features lots of the usual suspects AND a nice version of LIBERTY BELL MARCH (the theme song used for MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS).

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

The Living Trio - Come Saturday Morning (1970)

I only picked this one up for one reason - a cover of the Beatles song THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD and, boy, is it awful! In fact this whole album is pretty bad, very generic, and I swear that they used to play it at JC Penney when I was a tot being drug around by my mom in that store!

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

The Hustlers - In Action (Live From Aspen's Red Onion)

This one was taken from a sealed vinyl copy and has great sound although there was some surface noise on a couple of the songs which I think was from the original mastering. It's actually pretty good with a couple of nice folk songs and some comedy bits mixed in between.

Link (256 kbps CBR MP3)(image)

New York City Overture Orchestra - Broadway's Best Overtures and Dances (1995)

This one was taken from cassette and features songs from lots of popular Broadway musicals (including South Pacific, Candide, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, and more.)
