The Humboldt League of Women Voters sponsored a March 30, 2012 2nd CD candidates forum, which was attended by all of the twelve candidates except the leading Democrat Jared Huffman, and No Party Preference candidate Brooke Clark. A secondary posting blog

A secondary posting blog (www.feedage.com) discusses this March 30, 2012 event in “Congressional candidate Huffman a no show again for Humboldt County debate! Sound bites from the Humboldt Senior Resource Forum.” Dan Roberts is reported as having said

Dan Roberts is reported as having said: “No Bail Outs!” He goes to DC 5 times a year and understands the process. Says his is a moderate on social issues.”

I regularly monitor the web for references to the 2nd CD race, but the only reference I have found to Dan Roberts’ fiscal policies is in The Humboldt County Journal, discussing the 2nd CD race in Ryan Burns’ March 15, 2012 report “Congress: the Dati

As strategies go, simply being a Republican is enough to earn Roberts some loyal support, and he’s keeping his platform simple. Under the “Issues” tab on his campaign website only one issue is addressed: federal spending.

Asked his opinion on other topics, Roberts said he needs to put everything aside except “one issue: fiscal conservatism. Cut the deficit, bal-ance the budget, stop the spending. It starts there. All of our unhappiness begins with progressive liberals no

I checked (www.danrobertsforcongress.com) Dan Roberts’ website on April 15, 2012 to see if this issue situation had changed and found that the “Issues” tab was gone, with no issues content at all anywhere on this website.

An April 15, 2012 article by San Joe Garofoli in the San Francisco Chronicle refers to “Republican Dan Roberts, a Mill Valley securities broker” in its analysis of the 2nd CD race.

Here Joe Garofoli reports, “Though Roberts supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage, he rails on Democrats for the federal stimulus package and the new health care law.”

Joe Garofoli says re Dan Roberts’ 2nd CD campaign that Roberts “has loaned $160,000 to his campaign and raised a fraction of that.”

I have pledged to keep my own campaign spending below 10% of that by Roberts (in order to mitigate criticism that I might undercut his “much more viable candidacy”, to which Roberts has pledged $800,000 of his own funds and substantially more from his

substantially more from his wealthy friends). I checked Dan Roberts’ most recent (4/5/12) FEC Report to see what fraction of $160,000 Joe Garofoli was talking about.

In Roberts’ FEC 2011 cumulative report there no reported contributions from any of the 2nd CD counties (and only $2,800 from elsewhere).

In the 4/5/12 report Garofoli is probably referring to, F. Randall Smith (New York) contributed $1,000; Joe Blumenschein (Wisconsin) contributed $500, and $1,640 is not itemized.

Mojgan Hariri (Sausalito) contributed $300. All of the rest comes from Novato, perhaps from the same March 7, 2012 fundraiser: Giti and Roland Underhill contributed $5,000 as did Hans and Tina Fillinger. D. Keith Coombs contributed $500.

Roberts’ campaign spending in the first Quarter of 2012 consisted mainly of advance payment to six Registrars of Voters for Statements that will appear in the Voters Pamphlet, totaling $12,087.

Roberts paid Amy Tan a total of $1,290 to perform six campaign tasks in his behalf, and he spent $851 on his own travel. Except for processing charges by Chase Bank ($1,428) and the filing fee ($1,694), Dan Roberts spent $60 on postage, and $15 on Web Hos

Replying to a claim that Dan Roberts would be a factor in Mendocino County, www.feedage.com “2nd Congressional Predictions Mendocino County” says: “I am not convinced that Republican Dan Roberts will have any legs in any of the Northern Counties.

Less than 50% of the Republicans will vote for him, with many split votes all over the place.” I believe that such a prediction fits any Republican candidate with no answer to Walter Mondale’s 1984 question to Gary Hart, “Where’s the Beef?”
